(Your Name) Ms. Whitesides English: Period (Then spell your period hour out!) 05 May 2017 Expository Essay: Mythology Start here with position one: an attention getter. Remember this is never a question. AG’s are quotes, or use higher level word choices, or an interesting comment. If you use a quote or you paraphrase, you must cite it (Whitesides). If there is not author, use an entity (Poets.org). Now get a question; Take it right from the prompt. Don’t forget a “?” You can still use sides or perspectives, or you may choose to just place four background sentences of information. Now shoot for a lead, to lead the reader to your side using a soft transition word, (Perhaps, or Perchance, or Maybe.) Usually a lead in an expository comparison and contrast infers that either experiences or sides are important to being close to the truth. Leads are not repetitive to the claim. Now, for the most important part, the Claim/Thesis statement. Start it with a strong- this is a fact- transition word, (Evidently, Factually, Facts Denote, etc…) then answer the question, and then tell two short ideas. These thesis/claim statements do not need a “because” word always because it is information not argumentative. You will need 3 more paragraphs. The second paragraph talks all about the first higher level idea. The third paragraph discusses the second higher level idea. The fourth wraps everything back up and summarizes/synthesizes all you said, then ends with a clincher that refers to your Ag/Hook. (You can expand your essay with the elaboration of 3 ideas, 5 paragraphs, as you write more expository essays in the future.) Prewriting: Circle two higher level ideas of how your leader or event changed the world: Many prompts may need us to have these synonyms for the following: Similarities Differences Higher Level Idea #1 Similarities Higher Level Idea #2 Differences
