Installation Tips
Step 1 – Measuring & Ordering
With a measuring tape, measure in metres your planned area and then use the formula LxW=m² to work out how many square
metres you need. Prompt installation on the day of pick up, or delivery, is crucial for a strong beginning for your lawn.
Step 2 – Soil Preparation
For best results, rotary hoe or spade area to a depth of 10-15cm (4-6 inches). Eliminate any drainage problems by having soil slope
away from foundations, etc. Spread lawn mix top soil to a depth of 5-10cm (2-3 inches), rake out until level and then roll with a
roller. After this is done it will reveal low areas that will need more soil. Keep top soil 1-2cm (0.5 inches) below edging or driveway,
this will make your turf flush when it is installed.
Step 3 – Turf Installation
Spread out lawn starter fertiliser on top of top soil, no need to be raked. Spread approximately one handful per square metre over
the prepared area to help establish the root system of your newly laid lawn. A wetting agent can also be applied to assist in water
retention.
If you are installing a sprinkler system, install it after soil preparation at the desired height. Water the area to settle the soil and
provide a moist base for laying the instant lawn.
Install your lawn immediately upon delivery. It is important to water within 30 minutes of installation. Turf is a living plant that
requires ground contact and moisture to survive!
Begin installing turf along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or footpath. Push each roll firmly together (without
stretching), laying in a brickwork pattern. Avoid gaps and overlaps. Use a sharp knife to trim corners etc. Avoid leaving small strips
at outer edges as they will not retain moisture. On slopes, place the turf pieces across the slope.
For warm season grasses such as Kikuyu, Couch and Soft Leaf Buffalo, a light top dressing of washed sand is beneficial. This will
help retain moisture and smooth out any cracks or gaps in the roll.
Step 4 – Watering
Give your new lawn at least 2-3cm (1 inch) of water within half an hour of installation. Water daily, keeping turf moist until it is
firmly rooted (approximately 3 weeks). Then less frequent and deeper watering should begin in order to encourage a stronger,
deeper root system.
Weather conditions will dictate the amount and frequency of watering. Be certain that your new lawn has enough
moisture to survive hot, dry or windy periods. Water areas near buildings more often where reflected heat dries the turf.
