(Easter) “Why Jesus” Mark 16:1-8
12 “Endings, Beginnings, and Everything Else” Rev. 1:17-18
19 “Never a Funeral I Didn’t Dance” John 11:17-35
26 “Stronger Than Death” Isaiah 10:1-8, 28-31
A couple of weeks ago, I had the great privilege of attending a conference in
South Georgia at Epworth by the Sea, a Methodist retreat center. It was wonderful to enjoy the warmer weather and see the sun most days. It was also uplifting
to spend the week with fellow pastors from all over the country learning how to
share our faith more effectively with those around us. But probably the most
influential piece of the trip was being able to be in such a significant place for all
those of Methodist and Wesleyan heritage.
Many United Methodists do not realize that John and Charles Wesley, the
two brothers who helped formulate and organize the Methodist way of understanding and living out Christianity, actually spent some time in North America.
I took the opportunity to walk the very ground where John and Charles preached
the Good News of Jesus Christ, provided spiritual guidance to the colonists, and
attempted to share their faith with the Native Americans who lived there. It is
important to remember that so many have journeyed before us telling of God’s
love for us.
John and Charles revolutionize the way we think about our faith. They called
people to take their faith seriously. They encouraged people to take care of their
neighbors, practice prayer and fasting, provide for the poor, and allow the spirit
of God to actually transform their lives. They encouraged greater piety and compassion. They believed that telling people about the saving power of Jesus Christ
and moving them to experience that transforming grace firsthand was incredibly
important.
For all their good efforts, the brothers were complete failures in North America. Charles lasted a mere five months, and John was slightly better at two years.
The colonists grew to despise them. The Native Americans were not interested
in them. The environment was not friendly to them. Two men that we look up to
as giants in our faith were still very human. They made mistakes.
But as I remember their story, I am also keenly aware that I am a Christian and a United Methodist because of the movement they started. Because of their struggles, they also grew deeper in their faith. I find it incredibly reassuring to know that
the work of God is not solely dependent on my abilities, efforts, or successes.
As we move into the season of Easter, I think about all the times the disciples had failed to live up to the message of Jesus. And yet, they were obedient and faithful to the word of grace that had been placed in their lives by Jesus himself. Because of their walking with God, all of us have had the opportunity to encounter the living, risen Jesus.
By the spirit of God, armed with a message of life, may we also step out and dare to tell the story of our encounters with
Jesus, as we journey with the Wesleys and Jesus’ chosen disciples. That is how we transform the world.

Save the Date for a Child You Love: June 15-19, 2015
Central United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School is for children preschool through fifth grade. More details coming soon.
CAMP INDICOSO
It is time to begin registering for camp! Early bird deadline is April 20. Middle School camps are June 1419 and June 21-26. Elementary Camp (grades 3-5) is July 5-10. You may visit beacamper.com to register
online. However, you will need an I-cash code to complete the registration, so please contact Nancy in the
church office at 812-424-3574.
Our children have been very excited to finally
have some warmer temperatures so they can resume outdoor activities! Classrooms have already visited the fish at Deaconess Hospital,
walked around our neighborhood and played on
our playgrounds.
Spring’s arrival ushers in spring cleaning as well.
We are in the process of making some necessary
improvements. It may be a little messy around
here, so please be patient. Our walls are getting a
much needed face-lift and the 200 floor is already complete. The 100 floor is currently underway. The infant floor will follow soon. We look
forward to starting our playground project also.
The grass on the playgrounds and outdoor classroom will be replaced with artificial turf when
the weather cooperates. There are plans to replace the roof on the infant floor this spring.
We appreciate the support from the church
members in purchasing tickets for our theme
baskets. We are excited about the amount of
money already raised and are hopeful the Craft
and Vendor fair will be a huge success.

CAJE Working to Make People the Priority
On Monday, April 20, at 6:30 P.M., CAJE plans to fill the ONB Events
Plaza (The Centre) with 1400 people at their annual Nehemiah Action.
Making the homeless and the mentally ill a priority in our community
is the focus of the Action this year. The CAJE Action is an opportunity
for all Central members and their friends and family to go out into the
community to fulfill our biblical call to do justice and to make disciples
for Jesus Christ. Tickets are available from Central Justice Ministry
team members and at the door.
