Aim: How can we separate the components of a mixture?
Mixture - consist of elements and/or compounds physically combined.
To separate a mixture, remember: “physically made, physically separated”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Starting with a mixture of: CuSO4(aq)= aqueous solution of copper sulfate
Fe (iron),
Sand
Goal: Separate this mixture into its components
{ CuSO4(aq), Fe, Sand } Heterogeneous mixture
magnet
Fe
gets pulled out by magnet
CuSO4(aq), Sand
filter paper
Homogeneous mix
{CuSO4(aq)}
“solution”
passes through the filter
Sand insoluble in water, gets trapped
in filter
Distillation
Apparatus
CuSO4(aq)
1) heat in flask so that it boils
(See handout)
CuSO4(s)
crystals collect at bottom of flask
H20(g) = steam
2) cool in condenser so
that it turns back to a
a liquid
H20(l ) = water
Distillation is primarily used to separate a mixture of liquids
that have different boiling points. The liquid with the lowest
BP will boil first.
