Vantage Plus MAX II Pre-harvest Application Timing Guide
Crop
Crop stage for optimum application timing (30% or less moisture content)
Wheat, barley, oats
•H
ard dough stage. Press kernel with thumbnail – impression will remain on the kernel.
• Typically 3 to 5 days before you would swath.
• Check with maltster before spraying malt barley.
Canola
•P
ods are green to yellow.
• Most seeds have turned from green to yellow or brown.
• If the crop is a Roundup Ready® canola variety, the pre-harvest application will not dry down the
crop. Weed control is unaffected.
Flax
•M
ost bolls are brown (75-80%).
Peas
•L
ower and middle pods are brown with dry seeds (75-80%).
•U
pper pods are yellow and wrinkled with rubbery seeds.
Lentils
•L
ower pods (bottom 15%) are brown and seeds rattle.
After application (all crops)
•Wait 3 full days (72 hours) before swathing. This
maximizes weed control by allowing time for
thorough translocation to the roots.
•Wait 7 days before harvesting (straight cutting
or swath pickup).
Post-Harvest Weed Control with
Vantage Plus MAX II
Use Vantage Plus MAX ll after harvest to control
perennial weeds including Canada thistle, dandelion,
quackgrass and foxtail barley to get next year’s crops
off to a cleaner start. With post-harvest application,
the quality of control depends on adequate weed
growth after harvest. Here are tips to get the best
weed control:
1. C
ut stubble as high as possible to leave as many plant
leaves as possible.
4. A
fter harvest apply Vantage Plus MAX ll at rates
ranging from 0.75 litres per acre to 1.5 litres per acre
when adequate growth is present:
• Quackgrass: 6-8 inches of green growth with a
minimum of 3-4 fully expanded leaves.
• Canada thistle: three or more leaves of new growth
after harvest. Wait at least 2 weeks after harvest.
• Dandelion: greater than 6 inches in diameter.
• Foxtail barley: when new tillers appear indicating the
plants are actively growing.
Weed Control Following a Frost
When looking for perennial weed control in the fall you
may have to deal with frosts. An application of Vantage
Plus MAX ll may be possible even when temperatures
fall as low as -8°C. Follow the tips below:
2. S
pread straw and chaff adequately to leave plants
exposed.
•Wait at least 2 days for the plants to recuperate and
then check for frost damage. Make sure to check all
areas of the field as low-lying areas tend to receive
more frost than higher ground.
3. S
pray when new plant growth is evident or when
enough leaves are present, depending on the
weed species.
•If frost occurs, ensure weeds are actively growing
– at least 60 per cent of the plant must be green for
Vantage Plus MAX ll to work effectively.
•Do not apply after a killing frost.
