ACTIVITY & EVENTS GUIDE | FALL/WINTER NEW! CENTRAL PARK 700 S. Broadway CITY OF MOORE 2015 Our Parks...Our Future! From the Assistant City Manager: The Moore Parks & Recreation Department takes great pleasure in presenting to you the Moore Parks and Recreation Fall-Winter Activity and Events Guide. You will find it a valuable resource for planning some fun in the coming months. Activites abound within the pages of this guide. Even as the leaves change and the temperature gets colder there are still a great many things to do at your favorite park, trail, or playground. This guide details our parks, programming, and events for the Fall and Winter 2015. There is a lot planned. Take advantage of the great park system we are fortunate to have. We strongly believe that our parks are our future. They add quality to our lives and play a critical role in the fabric of our community. The Moore Parks and Recreation Department strives to improve our parks and facilities on a continuing basis. On November 6, 2012 the citizens of Moore approved two propositions that will fund significant improvements and upgrades to our Contents parks and facilities. The propositions were called the Our Parks…Our Future program. We are in the middle of making many of those improvements. Page 3 has information on some of the improvements we are working on at the present time. In fact the largest park, Central Park, is well under construction with an opening expected in early 2016. This destination park will be home to a new recreation center, aquatic park, amphitheater, farmers market, a multi-purpose trail, and a playground accessible to children of all abilities. We have dedicated pages 4-6 of the Guide to Central Park. There is great information about the park, the fee structure for the recreation center and aquatic park, as well as the great many things you will be able to do in the park. There is also contact information for Parks and Recreation staff if you have questions about any aspect of the park. Over the next 5-7 years we will invest over $34 million of voter-approved tax dollars in our park system. We feel that once the Our Parks…Our Future projects are completed we will have one of the best park systems in Oklahoma! Main. Activities at the Center include cards, dominoes, quilting, billiards, ceramics, art lessons, woodcarving, and various crafts. There are also programs on nutrition as well as health checks for hearing, blood pressure, and blood and sugar screenings. Legal aid representatives and speakers from other professional groups speak to our seniors. Aging Services Inc., operates a congregate meal program at the Center as well. A transportation bus owned and operated by the Moore Council on Aging (MCOA) provides rides for senior citizens from their addresses in the Moore city limits to the Center. This service also serves seniors with transportation to banks, stores, the library, doctor’s offices, and other places within the city. The Council on Aging began a project to raise funds for a new facility. Land was donated to the MCOA for the project, and the MCOA and the City of Moore worked together to meet qualifications for a grant. In 1993, sufficient funds had been raised for the MCOA’s portion of the project cost; title of the property was transferred to the City, and construction begun. On February 22, 1994, the MCOA moved into its new quarters. Under an agreement with the City, the MCOA is the principal user of the facility, which is owned and maintained by the City of Moore. In 2013 approximately 2,250 square feet was added to the center. The expansion included rooms for billiards, dominoes, quilting and a computer room. The expansion was partially funded by the 1/4 cent sales tax approved by the voters of Moore in 2012.
