Humans vs Animals
Följande lektionsupplägg kan ta två lektioner i anspråk. Momenten är därför
uppdelade i två delar.
• Skriv ut lektionsupplägget
• Skriv ut elevmaterialet (sidorna ur textbook och workbook + ev. facit)
• Ljudfilen finns på www.liber.se från augusti. Ljudmanus finns även bifogat
för högläsning.
DEL 1
• What’s the fastest animal in the world? What would it take to outrun this
animal? Is there an animal which can?
• What’s the biggest animal in the world?
• Are we (humans) the most intelligent animal in the world? If not?
What animal is?
fort man springer.
Be dem diskutera följande frågor
i par igen:
• Why do we not always react as quickly as we need to?
What different reasons can you think of?
• Is it possible to train your ability to react more quickly?
snabba i sina rörelser osv.)
Läs texten i klassen.

4. Dela ut övningsbokshäftet och be eleverna nu göra uppgiften Check Your
Reading (s. 14).
DEL 2
9. Gör hörövningen (s. 17 i Workbooksdelen). Ljudfilen finns på www.liber.se från
och med augusti. Hf-manus finns bifogat för högläsning.
10. Avsluta med Now You’re Talking (s. 17 i Workbooksdelen).
Tips!

G. The human senses
Listen to the following about the human senses. Tick True or False when you hear
this sound.
Here’s number one.
Speaker 2:
You’ve probably had a headache many times in your life and
know that it may hurt quite a lot. The truth is that the brain is
the centre of pain when you hurt your leg playing football or
cut your finger on a sharp knife. But it is also true that the brain
itself cannot feel pain.
(kort paus för att svara på frågan)
Speaker 1:
Here’s number two.
Speaker 2:
You shouldn’t have a big meal before going to a concert. If you
do, your hearing will become less sharp. So the best advice
would be to have a light snack if you want good value for money when going to a live concert.
(kort paus för att svara på frågan)
Speaker 1:
Here’s number three.
Speaker 2:
Do you wear glasses or contact lenses? Don’t worry, most
people do, at least sooner or later in life. And as we grow older,
more and more of us need to do something to improve our eyesight. The fact is that only about one third of all human beings
have 20-20 vision.
(kort paus för att svara på frågan)
Speaker 1:
Here’s number four.
Speaker 2:
Scientists have made tests to find out if there is a difference
between men and women when it comes to smell. Experiments
have clearly shown that women actually are better smellers
than men. Women were born that way and they remain better
all their lives. For example, they are better at identifying smells
such as vanilla, cinnamon and coffee.
(kort paus för att svara på frågan)
Speaker 1:
Here’s number five.
Speaker 2:
Here’s a little experiment you can do yourself. Dry off your
tongue completely with a piece of cloth. Then put some food
or drink on your tongue. What will happen? Will you taste anything? No, you won’t, because saliva is necessary for any kind
of food or drink to have taste.

Dogs have a fantastic sense of smell.
They are good at finding survivors in
earthquakes. Eagles, on the other hand,
have very good eyesight. They can see/
spot a rabbit one and a half kilometers
away. Pigs have many more taste buds
than humans/human beings and elephants have incredible hearing. Seals
have very good touch and can track fish
swimming in very dark water.

Humans vs Animals
FASTER THAN
A SNAKE?
Is it possible for a
human being to run
faster than a cheetah?
Or hit harder than a
tiger? Or strike faster
than a snake?
Li Jing, from Beijing, China, is one of the world’s top martial arts experts. In
an experiment with scientists, she was going to use her arm and her hand to
strike like a snake.
5
10
15
This is how the experiment was carried out. A rattlesnake, whose bites are
extremely painful and often fatal to humans, was put in front of a red balloon
that was moving. Modern video equipment was used to show how the
rattlesnake raised its body and then hit the balloon. Result? 14.39 km/h.
Li Jing saw all this and was asked to try and do the same. She should imitate
the style of the snake and hit the eyes of a doll’s head with the tip of her
fingers. The head was moving back and forth, and from side to side, just like
the balloon. Result? 15.12 km/h. She was moving about 5% faster than the
snake! And she did it in the same style as the snake and with perfect precision.
For centuries people
have tried to imitate
animals. They have
studied animals to
learn to fight the way
they do it in the wild.
But is it possible, can
a human being really
learn to do some of
the unique things that
animals can do?
This proved that a human can learn not only to strike like a snake but do it
with the same accuracy and with greater speed! Practice really makes perfect!
Of course, it took her years and years of hard work to learn this.
Warning: Do not practise martial arts without a professional coach!
Li Jing was really successful when she tested her limits and challenged a
rattlesnake, but the questions is: Are humans as good as animals when it comes
to other things? Read the following information about our senses and find out.

SMELL
Humans have a good sense of smell. But it is nothing
compared to that of a dog. Dogs are born to sniff.
The dog’s nose is a remarkable organ. It is about one
hundred times more sensitive than a human nose.
It can sniff out illegal drugs and explosives, track
runaways from prisons and search for buried survivors
in earthquakes or avalanches.
SIGHT
Of course, a dog’s eyesight is pretty poor
compared to that of a human. And they only
see the world in black and white. An eagle’ s
eyesight, on the other hand, is probably at least
four times sharper than a human’s. That means,
an eagle can see a rabbit moving almost one and
a half kilometres away.
TASTE
Like humans, pigs eat vegetables, fish and meat.
Like us, their tongues have taste buds that tell
the brain if something is sweet, salty, sour or
bitter. A pig’s tongue, however, has 15,000 taste
buds. The human tongue only 9,000. So who is
the gourmet?

HEARING
Elephants not only have bigger ears than humans.
Their hearing is also much better. They use infrasonic
sounds in long-distance communication. Those are
sounds the human ear can’t hear at all. Elephants
recognise calls and voices of other elephants from
more than a kilometre away.
TOUCH
The seal has perhaps the best whiskers in the
animal kingdom. Using them, seals can track fish
swimming 180 metres away even if the water is
very dark and muddy. Humans? Well, at least we
can feel if the water is warm or cold.
THE SIXTH SENSE
There are many stories about animals that behave very
strangely before a storm, an earthquake or a volcano
eruption. Before the big tsunami hit Thailand in 2004, the
elephants left the lowlands for safety on higher ground.
Maybe some animals have a sixth sense and can foretell
disaster. Many animals can definitely sense changes in
the weather. Horses for example, stay close together when
they sense a snow storm. Humans? Well we tend to trust
technology more.
