OBJECTIVES
• Trustworthy consumer health information should be available to citizens to support decision-making about their health and
for improving health literacy which is the foundation for better health and wellbeing solutions in society.
• Public libraries can play an important role in health literacy promotion by offering quality health information to their users.
• The poster presents a training programme for public librarians organised by Central Medical Library (CML) of the
University of Ljubljana in collaboration with the Institute of Public Health of Ljubljana and Ljubljana City Library, the Public
Library “Oton Župančič”.
PUBLIC LIBRARIES FOR PUBLIC HEALTH –
a brief overview of a project
HEALTH LITERACY ENABLES BEHAVIOR CHANGES
Health literacy has been defined by WHO as the cognitive and social skills which determine the
motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways
which promote and maintain good health.
• In Slovenia we started a project “Public libraries for public health” in 2008
and “Health Corners” have been established in two public libraries since
2010 (1). “Health Corner” is not only the physical place
but rather a concept of health literacy promotion

encompassing broad spectrum of activities.
„Oton Župančič“
• An increased demand for consumer health
information has been noticed in public libraries
therefore the CML has organized training
sessions in providing access to quality
health information.
HEALTH CORNER –
“one site-one sound” effect
• Health Corner integrates a wide spectrum of
activities using social marketing aproaches
which influence public behaviours for the
greater social good.
• Professionals from regional institutes of
public health have recognized Health Corner
as an important channel for social marketing
– a healthy life style promoter.
• The European Parliament endorsed the eHealth Action Plan 2012-2020,
underlining the importance of health literacy for effective implementation of
eHealth (2).
TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR LIBRARIANS
1. Training on basic subjects
PUBLIC LIBRARY
INFORMATION NEEDS
• Informants in public libraries are often
faced with questions of users concerning
health. Knowing the appropriate resources
and providing access to quality health
information can significantly contribute to
the promotion of health literacy and health
promotion and empowerment of individuals
and society.
• Informants need the knowledge and skills
which can be useful in fulfilling users needs
for quality health information.
• Diverse information needs of informants
encouraged CML to integrate health
promotion activities of regional institutes of
public health into training program for public
libraries.
• Low health literacy has been linked to poor health outcomes such as higher
rates of hospitalization and less frequent use of preventive services. Both of
these outcomes are associated with higher healthcare costs.
