FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Presenting youth culture

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Presenting youth culture, street dance and urban music at Esplanade’s Yfest
SINGAPORE, 2 May 2013 – Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay will present the fourth edition
of Yfest from 21 to 23 June 2013. It is a 3-day festival of popular youth culture, presenting
urban music, street dance and visual arts programmes. Youths and the young-at-heart will
witness how the performers move beyond their limits in adrenalin-pumping activities and the
inspirational efforts of teenagers pursuing their dreams. It features four ticketed dance
masterclasses and 38 non-ticketed activities.
The programmes of the festival include music performances by talented young video
bloggers, a showcase of street dance and a festival village presenting graffiti display and
parkour demonstrations amongst other activities.
One of the key highlights of the street dance component is the SixTeen Dance Challenge.
Since the inaugural Yfest in 2010, it has been a platform to uncover young dancers with
potential in street dance and provide them with an opportunity to be mentored by our
internationally acclaimed choreographers. Youths will go through an audition and selected
participants will form four crews and undergo 16 hours of rehearsals and learn a
choreography which will be performed at the festival on 21 and 23 June 2013. This year‟s
choreographers include two-time MTV Video Music Awards nominee Buddha Stretch
(USA), former member of the original Lockers group in the 70s Tony GoGo (USA/JAP),
Leah McFly, better known as Waackeisha of Imperial House of Waacking (Canada) and
HIRO, a member of Middle Filter (Japan), who is our returning choreographer at Yfest.
Through this programme, Yfest hopes to develop teamwork, perseverance, creativity and
cultivate more self-confidence in our participants.
Dance enthusiasts can also hone their skills through four ticketed dance masterclasses
conducted by our SixTeen Dance Challenge choreographers. These masterclasses are
recommended for intermediate and advanced levels and are available at $25 per class at all
authorised SISTIC outlets.

Music lovers can look forward to Y-Singsations. In this programme, some of the youngest
and most subscribed video bloggers in Sinagpore, also known as vloggers who upload on
YouTube and their own websites videos of themselves performing, will perform „live‟ at the
Concourse. The lineup includes founder of Singapore University of Technology and Design
(SUTD) Bands and Open Mic Sessions Geraldine Quek, acoustic duo Light Up, Charcoal,
Youtube heartthrob Sam Driscoll, self-confessed oddball Samantha Rui, folk-pop duo The
Glad Stones, multi-talented Irwin Zephyr, singer-songwriter Rachael Teo and Linying,
whose diverse musical influence encompasses acoustic-pop, soul, indie-folk and blues.
Yfest 2013 includes a festival village, where visitors get to enjoy activities such as karaoke
singing, penning secret letters to their friends, creating their own magazines or finding
unexpected treasures at the Swop Shop, a place where youths get to exchange all kinds of
items, from clothing, accessories to gadgets, through freecycling, the act of giving away
usable unwanted items to others. We will also present thrilling parkour demonstrations, for
the first time in Yfest, and the works of local graffiti artists.
Parkour is the sport of manoeuvring from one point to another creatively, usually involving
daring stunts to get around obstacles. Found in the late 1980s in Europe, it sparked off a
following worldwide of adventure-seeking enthusiasts including in Singapore. We will build a
3-metre-high parkour structure at the waterfront courtyard of Esplanade during Yfest 2013.
Ashton Movement Agency, which is in the forefront of parkour shows in Singapore, will
perform several parkour demonstrations at Yfest. They had previously performed on
President‟s Star Charity and Channel U‟s “New Kids On The Block” in 2010, as well as the
Night Festival in 2012. The Yfest parkour structure will also double up as a canvas for our
graffiti artists.
Ms Licia Sucipto, Programming Officer, The Esplanade Co Ltd, said: “More than just
organising activities and performances, Yfest is a space and platform that our youths can
identify with and find a sense of belonging. As such, it is important to incorporate exciting
and new activities in the festival that will resonate with the younger generation. It is also
important to build signature programmes in the festival so that our youths can continuously
be engaged and inspired through the guidance they receive from mentors.”
With a diverse range of activities for all youths at Yfest, this is a fun-filled and dynamic
festival they can call their own. Please refer to the Annex for the full line-up of programmes.

Graffiti Artist Showcase
6 - 10pm
Esplanade Waterfront Lawn
The artist showcase provides the public a chance to observe local contemporary graffiti
artists Asno, Myow and S13 as they share with us their creative expressions in the form of
graffiti artwork.
Asno @ Shah Rizzal Bin Wan Hussain
Bold and analytical, Shah Rizzal aka Asno brings to the table a balanced mix of creativity and
determination. He is enterprising and fresh with new ideas, willing to take risks but at the
same time never compromising the quality of his work. He is self-taught in the use of aerosol
paint as his primary medium of communication before his formal arts education in LASALLE
College of the Arts with a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts. The street inspires him as he sees art as a
communicable visual experience that relates to its surroundings, as well as a form of
comment or a critique of the present state.
Myow @ Muhd Khairy Bin Ishak
The craving for artistic adrenalin brought him to graffiti art along with the world around it. The
Page 11 of 14
fact that this art form packed so much revolutionary power that he had delved deeper into it
since the day he first painted his name onto the wall. That act alone is to him was the
ultimate definition of freedom of self. Zincnite Crew and Project Burnerz formally
introduced him into the scene and that paved his direction into a whole new artistic playing
field. He got involved in major mural and painting projects which inadvertently elevated his
perception towards the possibilities of its final execution. He had also dabbled with stencil art
to complement the graffiti handstyles on his paintings as he felt that graffiti should not be
bounded by its traditional rule of painting. As this art form has its roots in freedom of selfexpression, and I believe so does its methodology.
S13 @ Syed Abdul Rahman Bin Mohamed Alhabshie
Rahman Alhabsie has been writing graffiti since 1999 and has gained recognition amongst
those in the community as the master of letter styles. He is part of Project Burnerz that was
formed formally in 2002 as a diverse art collective. Despite keeping low-profile, S13 is wellregarded among the street art elites in the region as one of the most creative letter stylists.
He was also crowned the champion for the Singapore Street Festival 2012.

2012 with the aim of getting youths to reflect and affirm their friendships and relationships
with one another. The public can write secret messages to a friend that will eventually be
delivered to their friends in 2014, just before the next edition of Yfest. These messages will
be written on a series of customized postcards that reflect a series of sentiments and wellwishes from present time, which will eventually translate into encouraging and heartwarming
moments in the future. The postcards are designed by students from the School of
Interactive & Digital Media, Motion Graphics & Broadcast Design, Nanyang Polytechnic. .

Swop Shop
Fancy a “new” top or two? What about pre-loved books, DVDs and assorted paraphernalia
for “free”? At Swop Shop, we believe that one man‟s junk is another man‟s treasure. Based
on the premise of freecycling (giving away usable unwanted items to others instead of
junking them), this is Yfest‟s unique venture which operates on a zero-dollar economy that
encourages us all to think twice before throwing something out.
Chekkit: Zine
Whether it is personal experiences, journals, photography, art and design or illustrations, zine
publishing is an activity fuelled by a passionate group in the youth community. Find out what
it takes to publish a (maga)zine, and contribute your own materials for Yfest‟s inaugural
