From the Principal’s Desk
Greetings
Welcome back to school for term three. This term teachers will make a concerted effort to help as many children
as possible achieve their age appropriate levels before the busy term four and the end of the year. We put a special effort into year six children's learning, to prepare them as well as possible for their intermediate schools. We
trust you will support this endeavour by ensuring children’s attendance is excellent.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
Recently, Papatoetoe North Primary School engaged an independent company, Harrison Tew, who specialise in
emergency management planning for schools. The procedures we have implemented with their guidance allow us
to respond safely, and quickly, to a range of circumstances.
The company's Directors are both ex-police with over 30 years combined experience, and the procedures are in
line with that of emergency services response, civil defence, and emergency management.
As a component of the implementation of the emergency procedures into our school, specialised training has been
conducted with senior management and our staff. Today, the students received training which was directed at the
respective age groups, from Harrison Tew.
The training has been successfully implemented in many schools throughout New Zealand.
This Friday, the 29th of July, the school will be conducting a lock down exercise under the guidance and
support of either Julia or Wade, the Directors of Harrison Tew.
The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of
a text message. The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all
updated information will then be posted on the school website.
Prior to this occurring, can I please remind all parents and caregivers to ensure your contact details
(mobile phone numbers and email addresses) are current, as this will be our communication with you,
should an emergency occur at the school.
In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down or evacuation at the school, do not attend the
school nor phone the school, as we will not be in a position to respond. Your presence at, or contact with
the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation, and could potentially place your children, and in fact yourselves, at risk.

BREAKFAST CLUB:
Our breakfast club opens in the morning at 7.45 a.m. We ask that you do not send your children to
school before that time, as it is very cold for them to be sitting outside waiting, and there is no one to supervise them.
Fruit for Schools has started at Papatoetoe North School. Every child is given a piece of fruit to eat
each day. This is a very successful venture and will benefit the children as the cold weather starts.
ADDRESS AND TELEPHONE UPDATES
It is very important for the safety of your children, that we have updated address and telephone numbers. If you
have moved during the holidays, or have new contact numbers, please remember to let us know in the school office, so that we can update your children’s records. The more contact numbers we have for your child, the better.
