Old Salem Museums & Gardens in
Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has served as the
setting for the biennial Conference on Restoring Southern
Gardens and Landscapes since its founding in 1979.
The conference’s mission has been to promote historic
horticulture, garden history, and landscape restoration in the
southern states, presenting topics of interest to the professional
and layman alike and providing participants an opportunity to
learn and share information about this field in the South.
The 2oth Conference recognizes several major themes in southern
landscape restoration that have gained attention and momentum
in the years since the conference’s founding, including heirloom
gardening and seed saving, restoring the early 2oth-century
southern garden, the African American farm and garden
landscape, and early images of the southern landscape.
Key speakers include Peggy Cornett, Curator of Plants,
Monticello; Ira Wallace, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange;
Suzanne Turner, Landscape Architect; Matthew Raiford,
CheFarmer; Michael W. Twitty, Culinary Historian of
African and African American Foodways; Judith Tankard,
Landscape Historian; Beate Ankjaer-Jensen, Gari Melchers Home
and Studio; Jane White, Restoration Gardener; and Johanna
Brown, Curator of Moravian Decorative Arts, Old Salem.
The conference is co-sponsored by Old Salem
Museums & Gardens, The Southern Garden History Society
and Reynolda House Museum of American Art.
