There is ring A,B,C,D and E. Ring A is the one closest to the center and is right outside the courtyard, and the outer Pentagon consists of offices. FactThe Pentagon is almost 6,500,000 square feet, and 3,700,000 of which are offices. Background ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ Location- Arlington County, Virginia Architects- George Bergstrom and David J. Witmer. John McShain inc. was the firm behind the building of the Pentagon The building was built in 16 months which was much faster than expected John McShain David Whitmer (left) and George Bergstrom (right) The Purpose of the Pentagon ❏ ❏ The Pentagon was originally built to have a place to house the Department of Defense. The Pentagon serves three purposes; A building, institution, and Symbol. ● As a building it contains many offices and security headquarters. ● As an institute it is the home of the Department of Defense. ● As an a symbol it shows the US’s Strength after the 911 attack. The Building of the Pentagon September 11, 1941construction started January 15, 1943construction finished January 16, 1943opened to the public September 11, 2001911 attack September 11, 2002rebuilding after the attack completed 911 and the Pentagon On September 11, 2001 within thirty minutes of two planes hitting the World Trade center a plane crashed into the Pentagon. Hitting it on ring E between corridor 4 and 5. The amount of people that lived proved the security of the pentagon but many people died as well. All of the people on the plane died as well as 125 occupants from the Pentagon. Geometric Dimensions ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ Surface area- 653,555 square feet volume-11,594,300 ft3 interior- 63,900 feet area- 523 acres square feet total- 6,500,000 Description of Building ❏ The Pentagon building in Arlington County, Virginia is a 3D object called a pentagonal prism. If it was a polygon, it would be a pentagon (hence the building’s name). The Pentagon can be divided into 3 equilateral triangles and 2 right triangles. Each side is 920 feet, because a pentagon has five equal sides. The building has interior and exterior walls, the interior walls which form a pentagon have a surface area of 255,600 feet and the exterior walls have a surface area of 397,955feet. Which makes the total surface area 653,555 feet. To find the surface area you would have to use the formula hp+2B. The variable h, means height which is 71 feet. The variable p, means the perimeter of the base which is 4,605 feet. The variable B stands for the area of the base which is 163,300 feet. When you add those together you get the surface area of the exterior walls. You use the same formula for the interior walls and you get the surface area of the interior walls. Then you add those together and get the total surface area. To find the volume you use the formula v=Bh. The variable B, as we said earlier means, the area of the base, which is 163,300. The variable h, means height, which we also said earlier, is 71. When you multiply those together you get the volume of 11,594,300 feet Model Pictures Scale The scale we used is 920 ex. 920 ft. / 920=1 foot per side ← side length 36 t. 0f 0 Ring E 360 ft. t. 50 ft . 50 ft . 50 ft . 50 ft . ft. But the place does contain 284 restrooms and 691 water fountains. Materials ❏ The Pentagon was created with 680,000 tons of mixed sand, gravel, and concrete. There were 41,492 pilings needed to support the building. Time to Build If 1,000 workers are hired to work on the construction of the Pentagon for six days a week, and can build 250 square feet a day, it would take them 202 days (34 weeks) to build it. Stores to Buy Materials ❏ Home depot - Cement - Gravel ❏ Lowes - Sand - Pilings ❏ Empire Cat - Equipment Rentals How Much Money? ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ ❏ If a group of four workers can work for $42.50, and we enroll 1,000 workers, we have to pay them $10,625 each day (all of them- not each). For the entire building time, we pay them $3,219,375. Sand (included price of gravel and cement) costs $4.15 per 55 pounds, therefore costing $166 for every ton. 680,000 tons = $112,880,000 overall. Pilings/rods cost $8.50 each (per say) to install one. There are 41,492 pilings in all so the end price is $352,682. Equipment to build the Pentagon can be rented for $208 a day (3 machines). If we rent 12 machines it would be $832 each day for 202 days. Overall it would cost $168,064. Our overall cost is $116,620,121 Bibliography ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ http://history.defense.gov/pnt_history.shtml http://www.lowes.com/cd_Concrete+Pad+Calculator_100901113_ http://www.lowes.com/Concrete-Cement-Masonry/Concrete-Masonry-Products/Sand/_/N-1z11pty/pl#! http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/The_Pentagon http://www.empire-cat.com/ http://easycalculation.com/area/learn-penta-prism.php http://www.mathopenref.com/constinpentagon.html
