School Budgets A pproved
On Second Time Around
Voters in three school districts - Wyandanch,
West Babylon, and North Babylon - who rejected
budgets in May, approved them on a revote last
week.
In Wyandanch , the $2.55 million
budget was approved by a twovote^ margin. The vote iyas 169
to 1670 Also approved was the
purchase of two new school buses at $15,000 by a vote of 169
for and 159 against.
The total budget had been increased by $18,000 over the previous one submitted in May, but
the estimated tax rate remains
the same ot $3.4-29 per $100
assessed valuation. School trustees believe the revenues from
the sale of lottery tickets and
anticipated state aid will offset
the increased budget.
In West Babylon approved a
reduced budget by a vote of 1,223
to 1,083, The total budget which
was defeated in May by 500
votes called for an expenditure
of $7.98 million. At the June
vote, the budget was resubmitted,
divided into four propositions,
three of which were defeated.
The operating budget of $7.86
million was approved. The pro-
llllllllllllllllilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
positions that were defeated
were: a $45,000 proposal to buy
six new school buses, 1,477
to 872; $22,600 summer-school
program, 1,438 to 928, and $9,000 public relations coordinator 's position, 1,983 to 366o
The estimated tax rate is
$12.54 per $100, 45 cents less
than proposed for last month's
budget.
In North Babylon, the $10.22
million budget was approved by
a vote of 1,821 to 1,160. The
estimated tax rate is $12.94 per
$100. The winter recreation proposition was defeated by a vote
of 1,448 to 1,426.
Also defeated was the proposed
library budget of $110,206, which
had been trimmed by $7,000 by
a vote of 1,547 to 1,352. The
library board has indicated that
it will not seek another vote on
the budget, but operate on the
same budget as this past year
of $96,400.
