GREATEST

'The Shot'
By Michael
Jordan
Michael Jordan is probably
the greatest and most beloved basketball player of
all time. Although most legends do not achieve the
perfect end to their careers, Michael managed to
end his time at the Chicago Bulls with a legendary
shot that won the team the ‘World Series’ in the most
emphatic manner. With only 10 seconds left on the
clock and the bulls trailing 86-85, Michael dribbled
right, took aim and let out the iconic match-winning
shot.

Kika & Olivia
Road Trip Across USA
I flew out to Ventura, California to help Olivia drive back
home to Baltimore, it has been 2 years ! So we decided to
take our time—2 weeks and experience some of America,
It’s something you may have been following on Facebook. It
was an adventure. We called it an epic adventure, because
first of all as we left Ventura there was a rainstorm-- an
epic rainstorm-- from Dec. 1, 2016, through Feb. 14, 2017,
nearly 15 inches of rain had fallen on Los Angeles, which
is about twice the normal average. They never get rain in
California, so I had to play Olivia the song in the car,” It
Never Rains in Southern California”. Most young people
haven’t heard that song before—she hadn’t.
Our first stop was Las Vegas. I have been there for a
Therapist Convention but didn’t see much. Our goal
was to stay the night and see the magnificent hotels and
ride the indoor roller coaster at the Circus Circus. It had
unbelievable 90’ drop !
The Grand Canyon was next – A much bigger drop !
Located in the northwest corner of Arizona and bisected
by the colorful Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is a
geological and scenic wonder attracting nearly 5 million
visitors each year.A powerful and inspiring landscape,
We traveled and stopped along the south stretch of the
Canyon on the way to New Mexico. It took hours but it was
all so breathtaking and enormous. It is approximately a
1,000 mile loop around the entire Grand Canyon.
Along the way to Albuquerque,NM , I noticed there was
a lot of land for sale. We saw 40-acre farmland for sale.
We looked at each other and said, “What are they growing
here?” There was nothing growing. About an hour or two
of highway they were selling another 40 acres of farmland.
Being a Real Eastate Agent, I thought to myself, “How
much are they asking?” I should have taken down their
phone number; It must have been cheap. They couldn’t
give it away! If you want a lot of land, take the ride down
from Grand Canyon to New Mexico and you’ll see it on both
sides of the road. When we got to Albuquergue we took
the tram tour to view the Sandia Mountains which were
just beautiful. Sandía means watermelon in Spanish, and is
popularly believed to be a reference to the reddish color of
the mountains at sunset. The mountains were high and so
wide, there was snow on top with skiers while it was in the
60’s at the bottom. From the top peak to the canyon below
is taller than Mt, Everest !
After New Mexico we went through Texas and there was
a little area called Brownwood where we stayed in a hotel
because it was cheaper than inside the city. I tried to make
a phone call. There’s no internet in Brownwood. They only
use AT&T and the motel guy said, “You have to sit on this
golf cart right here to make a phone call. That’s within our
networks.” I sat on a golf cart and made a phone call, which
wasn’t very good reception.
We left Brownwood and then we were running out of gas
and we couldn’t find a gas station because it was stretches
of road in all directions, no stores, nothing. I said to Olivia,
“You know, if we run out of gas right now, we can’t even
call AAA because there’s no reception.” It was a part of
America, and I’ve only seen a little bit. I guess we take for
granted, the internet, the houses, gas stations, stores.
the Grand Canyon overwhelms your senses through its
immense size: 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and
a mile deep.
So, going through Texas there were patches of dry grass and
desert. This one town had freight trains come by every ten
minutes. Across the street was an old church. The windows
were out, the doors were out. We took pictures in front of it.
It was so cool. We went inside. It was just such a cute little
abandoned building, and behind it was nothing. There was
no mountains, no trees, nothing for as far as you could see.
Just tumbleweeds.
It reminded of a lady who marketed tumbleweeds on the
internet for $40!
development.” Then I exclaimed “$80,000, my gosh. You
can’t get a townhouse
Next stop Austin, the Capital of Texas and the“Live Music
Capital of the World”. It is on the banks of the Colorado
River. What a view from a roof top Restaurant we went to!
Then by chance Olivia saw a guy with a Oriole “T’ shirt.
He was with a group celebrating a birthday. Being from
Baltimore we naturally
struck up a conversation
and, low and behold, it
was our friend Mindie’s
family. Mindie is Jim
Moro’s assistant who is
Andy’s accountant for
the Barbecue. Both our
daughters were interns
at Jim’s office. We had a
great time talking.
Our last stop before going north is Nashville. Tenn. What a
friendly place, every Restaurant/Bar had GREAT music and
FREE ! All of the bands we saw were recording artists, with
CD’s for sale.I especially liked Tiple Run’s version of “Our
House”-gave me the chills. I’m going back to Nashville with
Andy !
Next stop New Orleans,
Louisiana.The folks
there have their own
accent,Cajun I think ?
Well not everybody.
Outside of town we
noticed a lot of Trailer Parks. I found out later the area’s
water table is very high. Which means you don’t have to
dig far to find water, making foundations a challenge
In fact New Orleans is 6 feet below sea level, on average.
This is why in New Orleans they bury their dead above
ground. Anyway the city is historic and pretty. However
with the Mardi Gras celebration beginning we decided that
it was time to see Aunt Becky.
Next stop Athens,Alabama and stayed with Andy Sr’s
sister Aunt Becky. It was fascinating seeing Andy Sr’s
home town and old stomping grounds. We saw is High
School, the land where he grew up ( the house is gone
), and his favorite ice cream parlor- Kreme Delite ( Still
open). Aunt Becky showed us family and neighbor’s homes
that are still there. Also she showed family grave sites and
shared all kind of stories. Her southern accent is adorable.
Aunt Becky even took us to to the towns archives, where
we saw many things that made us appreciate Andy Sr’s
roots. Including the city of Athens honoring Andy Sr with
Andy Nelson’s Day Feb 20, 1960. My Andy was just 7.
Aunt Becky’s house is rancher. It has three bedrooms,
a bath, and a garage. I said, “How much are the houses
around here?” She said, “Oh about $80,000 in this sub-
What I learned on Our Road Trip Across the USA ?
The United States is gigantic ! Outside the coasts it is super
cheap. Country Music rules. For the most part it is full of
helpful & friendly people. It’s like a lot of little counties with
their own personalities.
But most importantly traveling is less about the destination
and more about the time spent together.
It was a very unique gift given to me to spend 2 full weeks
with my middle child! Those of you who have one,
Know what I mean. At first, when we left California we
didn’t get along. Olivia was very sad leaving her friends
job, and sunshine.
And to top things off family tentions surfaced also. I said to
her, “ by the end of this
trip we are either going to love each other
Or hate each other”But by the final week we were singing
out loud to country music together ! When we got
Home.
I asked her “what do you think?, Love each other?” She
nodded her head and said,”Yes, love each other !”
An epic adventure indeed !
