This booklet has been put together to help you feel more at home. Parent residency is welcomed, to facilitate this a parents bed is provided at each bedside. Your child’s plan of care begins at the time of admission and continues through to discharge. This programme will be devised in partnership with you and your family. We encourage parents to participate in their child’s care. The children’s unit can initially appear strange and unfamiliar. The aim of this booklet is to alleviate some of your anxieties and answer some of your basic questions. During your admission and especially the first 24 hours you will receive a great deal of information. If you are unsure about anything please speak to your nurse. Some families find it useful to write questions down when they come to mind so they are prepared when the doctors do their rounds. Please ask if you need a pen or paper. We ask that whilst on the children’s unit, that you take responsibility for your own valuables where possible, keeping them with you at all times. If you have been prescribed medication by your G.P., please give it to your nurse for safe storage. You may access it at any time and please remember to take it home with you. Should you require any further information please ask one of the ward team. Thank you for helping in the smooth running of the ward! PALS – Patient Advice and Liaison Service As a patient, relative or carer, sometimes you may need to turn to someone for on-thespot help, advice and support. This is where the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) can help you. The PALS service will also give guidance on how to access the NHS complaints procedures. For more information please pick up a leaflet at the nurses station, which explains how you can contact the service. OVERNIGHT STAY Chair-beds are available for those parents wishing to stay with their child overnight; these are kept next to your child’s bed. We ask that during the day these chair-beds be folded away to allow easy access to both sides of your child's bed or cot. Also situated on the paediatric unit we have a bathroom and toilets for the use of parents and visitors, there is also a parent's room that may be available. Bed linen is provided, but you will need to bring your own personal toiletries such as bath towel, face cloth, etc. We also ask that you bring your child's own toiletries, bath lotion, etc., as these are not provided. PLAY ROOM AND GARDEN Both Peter Pan and Wendy Ward have a children’s playroom and garden area. The playrooms are extremely well stocked with books, toys and games for all ages. Please ensure the rooms are kept tidy, returning any toys, games or books that have been removed from shelves. Children must always be supervised in the playroom and garden area, patients by parents or staff, visiting children by parents or other responsible adults. Also available on the ward are various computers for the children to play on, these are to be switched off at 9pm. Both wards have a Play Leader who can help keep your child occupied during their stay. VISITING TIMES Parents may visit their child at any time. Other visitors are welcome between 9am and 8pm. However, special arrangements can be made in certain circumstances. For the comfort of children who are very ill or have had surgery, we would be grateful if young visitors could be closely supervised and noise kept to a minimum level. Noise should always be at a minimum after 8pm. Children of school age will not be allowed to visit in school hours unless accompanied by a parent. EDUCATION Any children who are in hospital for more than 5 days will be referred to the pupil support team from the local Education Authority. Tutoring will then be arranged as appropriate. KITCHEN Food and drink is provided for children admitted to the ward, although parents and visitors may bring in snacks such as crisps and biscuits. Unfortunately, the ward cannot supply food for parents or siblings, however parents may use the kitchen to make light meals or tea and coffee. A fridge for parents use is located in the kitchen. Please ensure all food placed in the fridge is labelled clearly and removed on discharge. A drinks machine is also available in the kitchen. Each drink costs 30p, please ensure you have the correct money, as unfortunately the machine does not give change. You can also purchase tokens for the machine at the nurses’ station. It may be more economical for you to bring in your own supplies. If you do, it is advisable to keep these supplies in your child's locker. For health and safety reasons no children are allowed in the kitchen at any time. Please for the safety of the children on the unit do not let anyone into the unit as you are either entering or leaving. Close the doors securely behind you and ask those wishing to enter to ring the bell - they will only be granted entry if they can name whom they are coming to see. ON THE WARD All staff will be wearing two forms of identification: • • A security badge with their photograph on it A badge with their name and job title on it If anyone comes to see your child you do not know without this identification, please ring the call bell by the bedside and a nurse will come and verify who the person is. Under no circumstances allow strangers to remove your child from the ward. When you leave the unit please inform your named nurse, or the nurse responsible for your child, helping to ensure the correct level of supervision. Should you notice anyone acting suspiciously on or outside the unit please inform a member of staff. The hospital and its employees are not allowed to accept responsibility for any property left on the premises. We therefore advise you to keep valuables on your person at all times or at home. DOCTORS ROUNDS The Paediatric Unit operates a ‘Consultant of the week’ system for all children admitted under the care of the paediatricians. On admission your child will be allocated a named consultant. This will be the ‘Consultant of the week’ unless your child is currently under the care of a paediatrician. The Paediatric Unit has seven consultant paediatricians: Dr. R. Buchdahl Dr. R. Ajitsaria Dr. J. Menakaya Dr. N. Barakat Dr. A. Khakoo Dr. F. Regan Dr. M. Cruwys Only 4 consultants operate as the ‘Consultant of the week’ – Dr. Ajitsaria, Dr. Buchdahl, Dr. Barakat and Dr. Regan. Dr. Menakaya, Dr Khakoo and Dr Cruwys are mainly based on the Neonatal Unit. Approximate ward round times for consultants are: Monday Tuesday - Friday 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon Times of ward rounds can only be approximate, as the length of the rounds will depend on the number of patients on the ward. However, every child admitted to the paediatric unit under the paediatricians will be seen daily by a member of the team. CONSULTANTS There are a number of other consultants who also look after children on the paediatric unit. These include the surgical and orthopaedic teams. A member of these teams will see the children most days, although due to the shortness of admissions this may not be the consultant. Due to commitments on the adult wards, theatre, outpatients department and casualty they have no specific ward round times and can arrive at any time during the day. If you miss seeing your child’s team and wish to talk to them, please ask your nurse to contact them. CHAPEL AND CHAPLAIN If you would like to talk to the hospital chaplain of your denomination, please inform your nurse or the nurse in charge. The hospital Chapel is located on the lower ground floor in the main hospital tower block. Within the Chapel area there is an Islamic Prayer Room. The code for the door is available from security. WHO IS THE NAMED NURSE? PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR ENTITLEMENT Many children and their families are not familiar with the term "Named Nurse". This information is provided to explain the objectives of the named nurse and ensure the best care is offered to children and families during their stay in hospital. The Patients Charter requires each patient to be provided with a named nurse. We are delighted to adopt this as policy. Your named nurse is accountable for your child's care in hospital. The name of your named nurse will be displayed above the bed in the ward area, or on the door of the cubicle. Your named nurse will be your advocate, give advice and help with any problems. Please feel happy to approach them. Your named nurse will not always nurse you, however you will have highly responsible nurses tending your child and your named nurse will be updated on all care given. Should your child need to be readmitted on the ward your named nurse should remain the same. This will ensure that you and your child will be able to relate to someone familiar. Your named nurse will be well educated and experienced in the paediatric field of nursing. Although qualifications will vary, all named nurses will have the Registered Children's Nurses Qualification. Some may also have diplomas and degrees. If, for any reason, you are not happy with your named nurse, it can be discussed and another named nurse arranged. If you have any further questions regarding the named nurse please discuss the subject further with any member of staff.
