Why I picked Leonardo da Vinci?
Science is defined as “the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and
natural world through observation and experimentation.” In Leonardo’s notebooks, we find
the essence of that definition. In his notebooks, we are able to observe the systematic
exploration of the world, its patterns, and the constant search for the interconnectivity among
world’s phenomena. For more than 40 years, Leonardo da Vinci gathered his observations and
ideas in his now famous “Notebooks”. They include over 100,000 drawings and more than
6,000 pages of notations. Without a doubt, observation was at the core of his scientific
exploration.
Just like a modern scientist today, Leonardo used systematic observations, logical
reasoning, experimentation and mathematical concepts to find answers to satisfy his
curiosity. Infusing a passion for observation and questioning in our students is the first
step to engage learners in scientific investigation.
Teachers that promote the use of Leonardo da Vinci’s style science notebooks in their
classrooms will be fostering higher order of thinking and increasing comprehension and
retention in their students. Sketching, labeling, and coloring as forms of note taking have a
radical impact on creative problem solving and deep information processing. These types of
notebooks not only become enabling tools that create windows to the world and promote
creativity, but they are also an excellent instrument for tracking and assessing students’
learning.
Umm... that
gives me an idea for a
nice quote!

our perceptions."

Observation
Experimentation
These three keywords in the definition of science describe the
work of Leonardo da Vinci (or any other scientist) including the
littles scientists in our classroom (our students)

In my experience these three basic characteristics of a scientist define the
!three basic elements that are necessary for effective science instruction.
