Connecting
People and Parks
“The parks of the Emerald Necklace designed by Frederick Law Olmsted provide endless
possibilities for individuals and families to connect with each other and to the wondrous
surroundings along its six-mile span from the Fens to Franklin Park.”
We also saw the Olmsted Tree Society take hold in
its first year through the maintenance of heritage
and specimen trees around Jamaica Pond—ensuring
the health and longevity of these treasures. They
truly are the environmental workhorses in cleaning
the air, conserving water and providing an ample
canopy in the urban setting. We thank our generous
sponsors who helped us meet the initial $1 million
goal to launch this important initiative to assure a
sustainable urban forest throughout the Emerald
Necklace.

DEAR FRIENDS,
The parks of the Emerald Necklace designed by
Frederick Law Olmsted provide endless possibilities
for individuals and families to connect with each
other and to the wondrous surroundings along its
six-mile span from the Fens to Franklin Park. Our
work over the past 16 years has focused on finding
new ways to open up the parks and provide access
to all. As part of our strategic planning process, we
conducted an online survey last year among our
partners, overseers, donors and volunteers; helping
us shape a plan to take us forward into the year 2020. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
An important outcome of our planning process
has been the recognition of how closely our work
aligns with the critical need for addressing climate
change and sustainability. In fact, our two most
prominent initiatives this year directly impact the
goals of environmental restoration and flood risk
management.
This year we’ve seen tremendous progress in the
restoration of the Muddy River. Phase I is well
underway toward the eventual daylighting of the
river and the creation of the Justine Mee Liff Park,
through which the Muddy River will once again flow
as an open channel; reconnecting a key link along
the Necklace. We continue to be a strong proponent
for funding of the second phase of the restoration
to include bank-to-bank dredging and replanting
along the river. We have actively petitioned President
Obama and the Massachusetts delegation for the
funding to complete this critical environmental
restoration. We urge you to lend your support.
There were many successes to celebrate this year . . .
the formal dedication of the restored Kelleher
Rose Garden Fountain; our Summer Sundays in the
Park concert series which saw a 50% increase in
attendance over last year; a rousing Party in the Park
which raised more than $735,000 for the Liff Fund;
and a dedicated contingent of youth team members
and 751 volunteers who showed up week after week
to dig, prune, plant, and clean our parks. We so
value their commitment!
As the Conservancy looks ahead to the next five
years, we are excited to work closely with our public
partners to make the parks the best in the nation.
And we are committed to be the conveners of the
many friends’ groups, institutions and abutters to
the parks to continue to cultivate a broad base of
support for the Emerald Necklace.
With gratitude for your continued support,
Ben Taylor

Piecing together a fountain’s
history
During the early 1900’s the public’s love affair with roses
was in full swing, visible in the popularity of formal rose
gardens across the nation including the New York Botanical
Rose Garden (1913) and the White House Rose Garden
(1916). Boston was to later follow suit when, in 1924,
landscape architect Arthur Shurcliff installed a formal
Rose Garden in Franklin Park (later closed in 1973). In
1931, at the urging of then-mayor James Michael Curley,
Shurcliff designed the formal Rose Garden sited opposite the
Museum of Fine Arts, featuring a reflecting pool within a
circular design. In 1975, the garden was renamed the James
P. Kelleher Rose Garden to honor the Boston Parks and
Recreation Department’s Superintendent of Horticulture.
interest in restoring the Rose Garden’s fountain
back to its original 1931 form.” That work began
in earnest in 2012 with Mary discovering just how
complex the project would be. “We quickly learned
that the fountain pool was badly deteriorated and
needed to be completely replaced, so what began as
the restoration of a little fountain grew into a major
reconstruction project.” The project, sited on City
of Boston parkland, required extensive permitting
as well as clearances from Boston’s Landmarks and
Conservation Commissions.
The restoration was primarily funded by the
Liff Fund, an Emerald Necklace Conservancy
fund established to honor the legacy of Boston’s
former Parks Commissioner Justine Mee Liff, who
died in 2002. The Fund supports the Emerald
Necklace’s renewal initiatives including major
capital improvements and landscape restoration.
The Edward Ingersoll Browne Fund and the Yawkey
Foundation provided important additional funding.
The dedication of the reconstructed Kelleher Rose
Garden fountain in June 2014 was the culmination
of a decade-long effort to renew the historic garden
which had been in decline in the late 20th century.
It may not be as evident when viewing the cascading
fountain—set prominently within a rejuvenated rose
collection—that the restoration entailed quite a bit
of sleuthing to reveal Shurcliff’s original design and
later iterations.
“Beginning in 2001, the need for restoration of the
entire rose garden was quite evident,” said Mary
Hickie, the Conservancy’s fountain restoration
project manager. “It was the completion of this
grounds work and an enticing history that spurred
2
“Thankfully, the Conservancy’s board and overseers,
and Boston Parks and Recreation, were completely
committed to this project,” said Mary. With that
assurance, the team proceeded to search for historic
drawings and photos of the original fountain and
surrounding garden elements, including four
cherubs and four planters. “Since the statuary
had long disappeared and attempts to track down
the originals failed, we ultimately had to rely on
historical photos to reconstruct the figures. The final
restoration is an exact replica of the reflecting pool
from Shurcliff’s original design.”

“What began as a restoration of a little fountain
grew into a major reconstruction project.”
The project team completed its work in the fall of
2013, setting the stage for the formal public opening
in spring 2014. “The opportunity to take part in such
a historic restoration of an American treasure has
been an honor,” offered Mary. “I feel so protective of
the finished product!”

A family’s legacy is rooted along
the Necklace
The Olmsted Tree Society was established in 2013 to preserve
and protect the trees of the Emerald Necklace through the
identification and improved care of more than 7,000 trees,
200 woodland acres and 8.5 miles of water’s edge. The
Leventhal family—Norman and Muriel and their son, Alan
and his wife, Sherry—provided the early support that helped
launch the Society.
Muriel, were born in the City of Boston and grew
up in Dorchester and Brookline. “Being able to
walk through open green space enriches our urban
experience,” said Alan. “People come to feel the
parks are their own—an extension of their homes—
and I think that’s what the Conservancy is doing so
brilliantly—making the parks a part of the lives of
Boston and Brookline residents.”
It is said that trees are compelling symbols of the
continuity of life through the generations. Two
American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) trees on
Pinebank Promontory at Jamaica Pond, each predating the 1850’s, were chosen to carry the names
of Norman and Muriel Leventhal in recognition of
their support.
The Leventhal family legacy is visible in some of the
most prominent real estate developments in the City
of Boston including Rowes Wharf, Center Plaza, One
Post Office Square, and the much-loved Norman B.
Leventhal Park in the heart of the financial district.
Guiding that legacy is a vision of providing the City’s residents with ample and inspiring public
spaces. Both Norman Leventhal and his son, Alan,
share with Frederick Law Olmsted the ideal of
having Boston’s parks and open space accessible to
all citizens.
“The world has become more urbanized and
increasingly more dense and complex,” Alan
Leventhal explained. “Maintaining the quality of life
in our cities has become much more difficult. Given
this reality, the preservation of our open spaces and
the work of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy have
never been more important.”
The Leventhal family roots are deeply connected
to the Necklace’s parks. Both Norman and wife,
For Alan, in considering support of the Society’s
efforts, it meant pondering the question, ‘How do
we protect and maintain these glorious trees which
provide so much for the environment?’ “Not only
is there a strong sense of commitment to what the
Conservancy represents,” said Alan, “but how can
you not support the type of leadership that Janet
[Atkins] and Wendy [Shattuck] have brought to this
initiative?”
Erik Gehring
Heritage Trees in Franklin Park
“There is such a sense of tranquility in the
majesty of these trees.” The family recently paid a visit to the site to view
the trees. “It was very emotional for me to see such
a beautiful spot not far from where Sherry and I live
and to have shared that experience with my parents,”
reflected Alan. “I think of when these magnificent
trees are gone, there will be others planted in their
place. The idea that this is something that’s forever
is very meaningful to me and to my parents. There
is such a sense of tranquility in the majesty of these
trees.”

What is a Heritage Tree?
Emerald Necklace Heritage Trees are
those with a trunk diameter at breast
height (DBH) of 32” or greater. Of the
7,000 inventoried trees, 874 (12.5%)
were determined to be Heritage.
Sixty-six trees measure 48” or greater
and are believed to have been planted
or present during the construction of the
Emerald Necklace.

Building youth leadership
through challenges in a natural
environment
along the Emerald Necklace honed their leadership skills and
deepened their connection to the natural environment.
On Recognizing Leadership Ability
A key component of the Conservancy’s strategy for
park stewardship is the engagement of young people
through education and experience. In the summer
intensive Green Team Program and the year-long,
after-school Youth Leadership Program young
people, ages 15-18, gain environmental awareness
through hands-on park restoration and maintenance
projects.
The students learn urban ecology and environmental
responsibility and gain valuable job skills and
leadership ability, helping to prepare them for
advanced job opportunities. For young people in an
urban setting, this deep connection to the natural
environment can sometimes prove to be a lifechanging experience.
A Continuum of Leadership
For many youth, the Emerald Necklace is the backyard they
didn’t know they had. By connecting youth with urban
green space this carefully designed program offers them
the opportunity to progress through increasing levels of
leadership, overcoming inexperience and gaining confidence
from their successes. Taryn Kincaid, the Education Programs
Coordinator, recently sat with two participants, Coliea T. and
Chris S., who represent the program’s learning continuum
from Green Team member to Assistant Crew Leader. The
students compared notes on how their experience working

quickly began to feel comfortable and now I look
forward to teaching a class. I actually took a public
speaking class recently and enjoyed it!

On Building Confidence
For high school students, curiosity and respectful awe are
important elements of transformative learning. Coliea and
Chris explain how the fears they faced as Youth Leaders drew
them into new experiences.
Coliea: In the beginning I was really scared to be
in the woods . . . it was all so new to me . . . but the
camping, canoeing, and field work were so much
fun I totally got through my fears. The program has
really opened me up to new experiences.
Chris: I used to be real shy and had a big fear of
speaking to groups but the program gave me the
chance to practice making presentations . . . I pretty

he was so welcoming. We were always laughing . . .

Chris: I think I knew early on [in Green Team
Summer] that I wanted to become an Assistant Crew
Leader. In the YLP program each student runs their
own program [for a day]. I saw that I was able to get
a team, who wasn’t getting along, to come together
and become more cohesive. Most of all, the training
has made me more confident and helped to prepare
me for job interviews and presentations.

erecting fencing and clearing debris, more than 300

Volunteers play an important role in many of the restoration
and maintenance efforts along the Emerald Necklace. The work
can be challenging—such as manually removing invasive

evening spent tending the roses in the Kelleher Rose Garden.
The effort involves local community groups, corporations,
area residents and schools, as well as Shattuck Visitor Center
greeters, interns, and Emerald Necklace docents.Without
question, their dedication helps to make the Conservancy’s
programs possible.
“I walk and talk the park, sharing my own

on a tour will embrace his legacy in their
own unique way and become involved in

Woodlands Volunteer Corps Volunteers help to
implement a comprehensive woodlands management
plan ranging from the eradication of invasive plant
species to the conditioning of the soil to promote a
healthier urban forest.
“Removing invasive bittersweet vines in the
Olmsted Woodlands is one of [my] favorite
ways of giving back. These plants crowd out
our native species and damage valuable
habitat, which is why the Conservancy’s work
is so important.”

Muddy River Annual Cleanup This popular
annual event—a natural extension of the citywide
Charles River Cleanup—is held around Earth Day
each April. Despite the steady drizzle and cool
temps this year, hundreds of volunteers turned out
to clean up the Emerald Necklace parks. Project
Assistant Intern Meredith Gallogly worked with the
Conservancy’s staff to coordinate the 2014 event.
The event attracts volunteers from most of the
surrounding colleges and institutions along the
Fenway and many choose to return year after year.
According to Meredith, “We’re fortunate to have
such a broad and dedicated group of volunteers who
view the Cleanup as their special way to give back to
the area…an annual homecoming, in a way.”

Party in the Park
One of Boston’s most anticipated spring events,
the annual Party in the Park, drew more than 700
champions of the Emerald Necklace park system
to a new setting this year—Pinebank Promontory
at Jamaica Pond—adding the stunning natural
backdrop of the pond to the festivities. Guests
helped raise over $735,000 for the Conservancy’s

This is a non-audited financial summary for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2014. The
independent auditor’s report including financial statements is available from the Emerald Necklace
Conservancy’s office upon request.
16
The Emerald Necklace Conservancy is a non-profit founded
in 1998 to maintain, restore and protect the parks of the
Emerald Necklace designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The
historic parks under the Emerald Necklace Conservancy’s
stewardship stretch from the Back Bay Fens through
Brookline into Dorchester. The 1,100 acres of inviting
green space connects people to the parks just as Mr.
Olmsted intended when he designed it more than 100
years ago. The Conservancy works in collaboration with
its public partners: Boston Parks & Recreation, Brookline
Parks and Open Space, and the Massachusetts Department
of Conservation and Recreation.
