Make Your Own Wasp Trap
1) Cut the neck off a plastic pop bottle.
2) Remove the bottle cap and flip the neck upside down and place it in the bottle opening that you
just cut.
3) Tape together using packing tape or duct tape.
4) Bait the trap.
 Meat - This is the best choice in the spring and late winter because wasps are
making nests and laying eggs, so they're searching for high protein food; you
may even catch a queen this way, in which case the wasps will relocate their
nest.
 Dishwashing liquid and water
 Mashed grapes
 Sugar and lemon juice
 Kokanee beer or coolers
 Sugar and water
 Sugar and vinegar
 1 tsp liquid laundry soap, 1 tsp sugar (to attract them), and water - if they do
get out, they will still die from the laundry soap
 Soda (lemonade, etc.) that has lost its fizz. This way it can still be of use. Add a few drops of washing up liquid to help break the surface tension of the soda.
Adding petroleum jelly or cooking oil along the steep edges of the trap can cause them to lose their
footing and fall into the hole.
5) Hang the trap by either taping a string to it, or affixing a screw that you can use to hang.
6) Empty the trap regularly - but first make sure the wasps are dead by pouring boiling water in or
Some more info:
Place the wasp trap away from human activity and about four feet above the ground. The trap works best
at about 85 degrees F. so you may have to move it into the shade on a hot afternoon or into the sun on a
cool morning. The theory behind these traps is interesting. The wasp will fly down into the wasp trap to
get the bait, but will not be able to find its way out. It will fly around inside until it wears itself out, at
which time it will fall into the water. The detergent in the water breaks down the surface tension of the
water, making it stick to the wasp's body instead of beading up around it. Since the wasp breathes
through it's body, it will drown. Many wasps are likely to visit these wasp traps, which means you will
need to empty them regularly. If you don't, the bodies of wasps will create islands on which the new
wasps can rest without drowning. You will need to replenish the bait every few days, too, for best results.
