Emerald Ridge Elementary School 15 Motherwell Dr., White City, Sk S4L 0C5 Tel: (306)781-6025 Fax: (306)781-6026 [email protected] Dear Parents/Guardians/Students: On behalf of the ERES staff, we would like to begin by thanking all our students and their families for the meals, cards of appreciation and special recognitions provided for staff appreciation celebrations. Thanks to Rona Pipko and the SCC Executive for coordinating and leading these outstanding events. Thanks to the parents who have contributed to the meals and who have written notes/cards to recognize the efforts of their child’s teachers, educational assistants, bus drivers, administrative staff and administrators. Your generosity and kindness is greatly admired and appreciated by all ERES staff. AS noted in last month’s newsletter, during our nonstudent day, the instructional staff focused upon current school data and prepared the document, ERES LIP Ensuring Student Success. This document was sent to our families on Feb. 10/17. The intent of the document is to demonstrate how we all contribute to student achievement. We have attached this document to this newsletter for your convenience in case you did not have a chance to read it. Also, during this professional development day, our instructional staff had the opportunity to work with Erin Kolish, our ELA Consultant from Prairie Valley School Division. Erin worked with the staff to reflect upon assessing student writing. Our goal as a staff is to develop baseline assessment data for future reference as we continue to focus upon written language instruction. We thank all the families that participated in our Family Literacy Day Bingo Challenge. Mrs. Hewitt was very impressed as to the large number of submissions this year. We congratulate the following students who were winners of the challenge: Evan S (2V), Paytyn W (3/4F), and Ayana W (6S). Each of these students won a $20.00 Chapters gift card! The funds for these gift cards were provided by our ERESCC, in support of our Learning Improvement Plan. We encourage families to implement the Family Literacy Bingo activities on a continuous basis. Empowering Respectful Enlightened Students February has been an extremely busy academic month and March will prove to be even more demanding. We congratulate all our students for their efforts towards the school oratorical. With pride, we congratulate Chante F (8B) and Jacob Z (7L) who were the top speakers at our ERES Speak Off and we wish them all the best at the next level of competition. Please pay special attention to our “Important Dates to Remember” and the monthly calendar which highlights upcoming events the students are responsible for. We look forward to seeing parents and community members during the upcoming Science Fair and Optimist Band Festival events, as well as at parent student teacher conferences. Please note that parents may book conference times starting at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, March 6/17. The conference booking system closes on Sunday, March 19/17 at 10:00 p.m. We would like to congratulate and recognize the grade 7 students of ERES who attended the Red Cross Pink Rally Tuesday, February 14, 2017. The theme of the Rally was “Let’s Change the Culture Around Bullying Together”. Parents can take actions to keep children safe from bullying, and to prevent a child from bullying others. Download tips for parents on preventing bullying, whether your child is being targeted by bullying, bullying others, or witnessing bullying behaviours. As we facilitate character development within our students, ERES staff continually reference and recognize students who demonstrate our Emerald Values. We also do our best to ensure children are made accountable and learn from their actions. This is not an easy task, but we will continuously strive to provide our students with the skillset and confidence to: respectfully stand up for oneself demonstrate empathy and courage to respectfully stand up for others continuously demonstrate integrity and maturity in order treat one another with mutual respect “Knowledge will give you power, but character respect.” -Bruce Lee Dates to Remember: Wed., Mar 1 - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 8 Intramurals 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 3 Skate 1:00 p.m. - Gr. 7/8 Book Club 3:30 p.m. - Jr. Boys’ BB host McLean 3:30 p.m. Thurs., Mar 2 - Jr. Girls’ BB practice 8:00 a.m. - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Craft Club 3:30 p.m. - Jr. Girls’ BB Playoff home game 3:30 p.m. Fri., Mar 3 - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - SLC Meeting 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 5 Intramurals Mon., Mar 6 - Conference Manager opens 6:00 a.m. - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 6 Intramurals 12:00 p.m. - Jr. Girls’ BB practice 3:30 p.m. Tues., Mar 7 - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Writing Club 12:00 p.m. - Jr. Boys’ BB practice 12:00 p.m. - Developmental BB 3:30 p.m. - Games Club 3:30 p.m. - Jr. Girls’ Playoff Game 3:30 p.m. Wed., Mar 8 - Cheerleading 7:30 a.m. - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 7 Intramurals 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 3 Skate 1:00 p.m. - Gr. 7/8 Book Club 3:30 p.m. - Jr. Girls’ BB practice 3:30 p.m. Thurs., Mar 9 - Jr. Girls’ BB practice 8:00 a.m. - Drama Club at 12:00p.m. - Craft Club 3:30 p.m. - Jr. Boys’ BB practice 3:30 p.m. - Jr. Girls’ BB Final 3:30 p.m. - ERES Gr. 7 & 8 Science Fair 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fri., Mar 10 - Gr. 6 Full Band Rehearsal - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - SLC Meeting 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 8 Intramurals 12:00 p.m. Sun., Mar 19 - Conference Manager closes 10:00 p.m. Mon., Mar 13 - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 5 Intramurals 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 4-6 Book Club 3:30 p.m. - Jr. Girls’ BB Windup 3:30 p.m. Tues., Mar 14 - Gr. 7 Full Band Rehearsal - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Writing Club 12:00 p.m. - Games Club 3:30 p.m. - ERESCC Meeting, 6:30 p.m. in the Grove Wed., Mar 15 - WE Day (Gr. 7), Saskatoon Wed., Mar 15 - Cheerleading 7:30 a.m. - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 6 Intramurals 12:00 p.m. - Gr. 3 Skate 1:00 p.m. - Gr. 7/8 Book Club 3:30 p.m. Thurs., Mar 16 - Gr. 8 Full Band - SLC “Jersey” Day - Drama Club 12:00 p.m. - Craft Club 3:30 p.m. Fri., Mar 17 - No School – Day in Lieu of Conferences - St. Patrick’s Day Mon., Mar 20 - Report Card distribution (no early distributions – end of day) Tues., Mar 21 Mar 21 - 24 Wed. Khari’s traces the steps of his own greatgreat-great grandmother, who escaped from slavery and sought refuge in Canada in the 1800’s. He resurrects the songs that inspired slaves who took the secret routes into Canada between 1840 and 1860. After speaking to elders and historians and looking through archives, McClelland began stitching together a suit of songs from this important chapter in history. As we are currently looking at the cultures and life stories that make up the tapestry of our Canadian society, this offers an excellent example of how one person’s story of migration is shaped and woven into who we are as a nation. Following Khari’s workshops, Mrs. Armbruster received this email from the Folk Festival, “Just want to say a huge THANK-YOU for the wonderful workshops this morning. Khari and Andrew were both so impressed with your students and the conversations he had with them.” The One Act play, Alice and Wonderland is well underway. Please mark the following dates in your calendar: We will have our dress rehearsal Monday, April 3rd in the afternoon. Sorry, we are unable to invite parents to attend this performance. We will be performing at ERES on Wednesday, April 5th at 7:00 p. m. Information about tickets will be sent out closer to the date. We will be attending the drama festival Thursday, April 7th during the day and then competing that evening. If any students are unable to attend the three dates listed above please contact Mrs. Armbruster immediately. A reminder that students need to have their lines memorized. On Wednesday, February 15th, the grade 8 students were invited to his live show at the Artesian in Regina. This show combined music, vocals, and projected images from McClelland’s research, which was funded by the Canada Council for the Arts. Drama Festival Thursday, April 6th The students will have supper at the school and then board the bus at approximately 4:15 p.m. We have our technical rehearsal at Miller High School at 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. and an evening performance at Miller at 7:00 p.m. Parents, family and friends are encouraged to attend. Stay tuned for ticket information. Friday, April 7th The students have a production workshop at 9:00 a.m. at Miller High School. Students will be asked to be at the school at 8:00 a.m. that morning to board the bus at 8:15 a.m. Telemiracle 2017 ERES is raising funds for Telemiracle.
