Art in Reverse- Found Object Sculpture
Fairy Tale Cold Case Detectives
Presenter: Deniz Ahishali
Presenter: Richard Ellis
Are you the creative type who loves to think outside the square? Ever
wanted to make use of your old broken toys and gadgets? Well it’s time
to consider making art in reverse. Re-use and recycle bits and pieces to
form a mastery of magnificent mess! We’re talking whimsical and playful
sculptures made of found objects.
In this workshop we will use a variety of materials such as interesting
trinkets, clay, wire, toys and other found objects to make an assortment
of unique sculptures including the most zany and quirky trophies you
have ever laid eyes on! We will explore the works of sculptors such as
Robert Klippel to gain inspiration for our own sculptures.
Bring along some random bits and pieces to use in your masterpieces
– think broken toys/costume jewellery, trinkets or any small colourful
bits of anything, broken or not, natural or manmade. If there’s ever been
a way to activate your creativity - this is it! Be prepared to have some
creative fun!
Was he REALLY the “Big Bad Wolf?” - or did he just have a cold? Is the
strange old woman in the forest with the gingerbread house a wicked
witch or practicing for Masterchef? Who has the most to gain from
Granny’s mysterious disappearance?
This workshop will explore these questions and more, as we re-examine
some of the key characters of our favourite childhood stories. We will use
role play and improvisation to act out some of the most famous scenes
and interview the main characters. Using our powers of critical thinking,
deduction and persuasion we will look at the evidence left behind to
decide if infamous fairy tale villains were really THAT bad.
Participants in this workshop will recreate scenes from famous fairy
tales in an effort to convince the judge and jury of the guilt, or innocence,
of these “alleged” evildoers.
Awesome Egyptians!
Genie-In-Us
Presenter: Sally Wood
Presenter: Patty Rose
Did you know that thousands of years ago there were people living in
Egypt who built HUGE pyramids? They also wore lots of jewels and
invented make-up! They believed in lots of different Gods and Goddesses
and they loved their cats SO MUCH that if their pet cat died they shaved
off their eyebrows to show how sad they were?! Join me to learn more
about the Awesome Egyptians and join in the fun as we have a go drawing
and painting and building along the way!
Is your genie from Genie-in-us ready to play? The great news is that
everybody can think and everybody can solve problems. So you are
already qualified for this funshop!
Day 1 we will learn all about the everyday lives of the Egyptians and try
our hand at hieroglyphics as we decipher the code they used when they
were writing their special messages. Then we will attempt to build our
own pyramids with everything from marshmallows to spaghetti! Day 2
we will look at all the different animals of Egypt and get to know some
of the Gods and Goddesses they believed in before we take our turn at
mummification!
Using some fun techniques we will be learning some creative
brainstorming strategies, ways to think on the spot and work together to
design and make fantastical creatures to feature in your own imaginative
World (like Pok-e-mon meets Minecraft) where anything is possible and
winning is by helping others.
If you have a bright imagination and like to create things, then come and
release your very own genie-in-us by using the magic of creative and
critical thinking to solve mysteries and grant one wish.
Hola! Let’s Speak Spanish
Music Madness
Presenter: Sara Del Rio Garcia
Presenter: Sam McMahon
¡Hola amigos! Did you know that many children around the
world speak more than one language? Wouldn’t you like to be
one of those lucky children?
In ‘Let’s Speak Spanish’ you will learn much more than just a
few new words - you will learn about a whole new world. We
use songs, games, dance, art and drama to introduce you to
Spanish culture and also begin you on the journey of learning
the beautiful Spanish language.
You will learn how to greet your friends and your family in
Spanish; about colours and numbers, moods and seasons and
many other topics.
If music is your deal then this is the workshop for you.
Bring along something from your kitchen that makes a fun,
wacky or interesting sound and join in composing, writing
and performing a kitchen symphony.
A symphony is like a story told with musical instruments.
So, although percussion may seem a little too easy, you have
never done anything like this before!!!
Parents will be invited to see the final performance at the
end of the second day.
This workshop is designed for children who are new to the
Spanish language, so everybody is welcome.
Introducing Physics
Presenter: Lorna Jarrett
Mystery Island- A Creative
Writing Adventure
Presenter: Nicole Chilko
Why is the sky blue? What makes colour? Why does the moon
change shape? What’s the difference between hot and cold?
Do you love to explore? To travel to new places; real and
imagined?
These are all questions that physics can answer. Physics is the
science that explores forces, energy, how objects move,
electricity, magnetism, sound, light, heat, and how solids,
liquids and gases behave.
Come on an adventure as we unravel the world of words and
imagination, based on being a castaway!
In this workshop we will explore all the questions above, and
lots more - with hands-on activities, role-play, demonstrations,
model-making and interactive computer applications.
As part of the workshop, you will be invited to send in your own
physics question for us to explore.
You will be able to create your own Mystery Island and have
fun developing your creative writing and thinking skills in
a variety of forms. From writing a letter in a bottle, a drama
script of your journey, a narrative of your encounters
looking for hidden treasure and much more!
We are looking for the bravest, most imaginative and
enthusiastic thinkers to embark on this creative writing
adventure!

MathCraft
Presenter: Clare Critcher
Calling all Minecrafters! For this amazing brand new
workshop you will work towards creating amazing virtual
structures. You will have opportunities to share your work
and work with new friends who are also Minecraft experts.
You will need to overcome special Mathcraft challenges to
become a Mathcrafter, so put on your thinking caps!
Mathcrafters carefully plan, think visually and are creative
too.
In this workshop we will explore area, perimeter, volume and
mathematical models and theories that go beyond a typical
stage one curriculum. Prior knowledge of Minecraft is essential for this workshop, and experience playing
Minecraft using a computer keyboard will benefit you.
Get ready to create something amazing!
Are you a survivor? Challenge yourself and determine if you
would be able to survive in the Australian bush.
Could you navigate yourself out of the bush if you became
lost? Would you be able to create a shelter to protect you
and withstand different weather? Would you be able to
collect clean water to drink?
In this workshop you will be challenged, your courage
tested, creativity tried and nothing left to chance. Through
a range of science experiments and mathematical
strategies learn different skills to help you become a
survivor.
At the end of the workshop students will use skills learnt
and general knowledge to discover where the hidden
treasure is located within the university.
