Little Learning Labs Workshops JULY 2017 3D Printing for Little Labbers Embark on a Journey: Let’s Learn French Presenters: Ben & Heike Roberts, Modfab Pty Presenter: Benedicte Henry 3D Printing allows you to make unique designs in CAD and then print them. Have you got a T-Shirt Design you would like to turn into a unique 3D Printed stamp? This is the workshop for you. What you will do on the day: • Design your stamp on paper • Transfer and build your design into an STL file using cloud-based software • 3D Print your unique stamp • Use fabric paint on your unique 3D Printed stamp to print on your T-Shirt • Create your own design of a pen topper and print it if time allows A day of fun and creativity resulting in unique products for you to keep. Have you ever heard someone speaking another language? French is the second most commonly learned language, after English. It is a beautiful language known for its harmonious and melodic sounds. In this workshop you will learn important skills through songs, stories, games and activities. For instance, you will learn how to greet your friends and family, as well as useful words including colours, numbers, moods and seasons. BONJOUR Globe trotters! This engaging introduction to the French language and culture will inspire you to begin a lifelong journey of discovery. Art in Reverse- Found Object Sculpture Fairy Tale Cold Case Detectives Presenter: Deniz Ahishali Presenter: Richard Ellis Are you the creative type who loves to think outside the square? Ever wanted to make use of your old broken toys and gadgets? Well it’s time to consider making art in reverse. Re-use and recycle bits and pieces to form a mastery of magnificent mess! We’re talking whimsical and playful sculptures made of found objects. In this workshop we will use a variety of materials such as interesting trinkets, clay, wire, toys and other found objects to make an assortment of unique sculptures including the most zany and quirky trophies you have ever laid eyes on! We will explore the works of sculptors such as Robert Klippel to gain inspiration for our own sculptures. Bring along some random bits and pieces to use in your masterpieces – think broken toys/costume jewellery, trinkets or any small colourful bits of anything, broken or not, natural or manmade. If there’s ever been a way to activate your creativity - this is it! Be prepared to have some creative fun! Was he REALLY the “Big Bad Wolf?” - or did he just have a cold? Is the strange old woman in the forest with the gingerbread house a wicked witch or practicing for Masterchef? Who has the most to gain from Granny’s mysterious disappearance? This workshop will explore these questions and more, as we re-examine some of the key characters of our favourite childhood stories. We will use role play and improvisation to act out some of the most famous scenes and interview the main characters. Using our powers of critical thinking, deduction and persuasion we will look at the evidence left behind to decide if infamous fairy tale villains were really THAT bad. Participants in this workshop will recreate scenes from famous fairy tales in an effort to convince the judge and jury of the guilt, or innocence, of these “alleged” evildoers. Awesome Egyptians! Genie-In-Us Presenter: Sally Wood Presenter: Patty Rose Did you know that thousands of years ago there were people living in Egypt who built HUGE pyramids? They also wore lots of jewels and invented make-up! They believed in lots of different Gods and Goddesses and they loved their cats SO MUCH that if their pet cat died they shaved off their eyebrows to show how sad they were?! Join me to learn more about the Awesome Egyptians and join in the fun as we have a go drawing and painting and building along the way! Is your genie from Genie-in-us ready to play? The great news is that everybody can think and everybody can solve problems. So you are already qualified for this funshop! Day 1 we will learn all about the everyday lives of the Egyptians and try our hand at hieroglyphics as we decipher the code they used when they were writing their special messages. Then we will attempt to build our own pyramids with everything from marshmallows to spaghetti! Day 2 we will look at all the different animals of Egypt and get to know some of the Gods and Goddesses they believed in before we take our turn at mummification! Using some fun techniques we will be learning some creative brainstorming strategies, ways to think on the spot and work together to design and make fantastical creatures to feature in your own imaginative World (like Pok-e-mon meets Minecraft) where anything is possible and winning is by helping others. If you have a bright imagination and like to create things, then come and release your very own genie-in-us by using the magic of creative and critical thinking to solve mysteries and grant one wish. Hola! Let’s Speak Spanish Music Madness Presenter: Sara Del Rio Garcia Presenter: Sam McMahon ¡Hola amigos! Did you know that many children around the world speak more than one language? Wouldn’t you like to be one of those lucky children? In ‘Let’s Speak Spanish’ you will learn much more than just a few new words - you will learn about a whole new world. We use songs, games, dance, art and drama to introduce you to Spanish culture and also begin you on the journey of learning the beautiful Spanish language. You will learn how to greet your friends and your family in Spanish; about colours and numbers, moods and seasons and many other topics. If music is your deal then this is the workshop for you. Bring along something from your kitchen that makes a fun, wacky or interesting sound and join in composing, writing and performing a kitchen symphony. A symphony is like a story told with musical instruments. So, although percussion may seem a little too easy, you have never done anything like this before!!! Parents will be invited to see the final performance at the end of the second day. This workshop is designed for children who are new to the Spanish language, so everybody is welcome. Introducing Physics Presenter: Lorna Jarrett Mystery Island- A Creative Writing Adventure Presenter: Nicole Chilko Why is the sky blue? What makes colour? Why does the moon change shape? What’s the difference between hot and cold? Do you love to explore? To travel to new places; real and imagined? These are all questions that physics can answer. Physics is the science that explores forces, energy, how objects move, electricity, magnetism, sound, light, heat, and how solids, liquids and gases behave. Come on an adventure as we unravel the world of words and imagination, based on being a castaway! In this workshop we will explore all the questions above, and lots more - with hands-on activities, role-play, demonstrations, model-making and interactive computer applications. As part of the workshop, you will be invited to send in your own physics question for us to explore. You will be able to create your own Mystery Island and have fun developing your creative writing and thinking skills in a variety of forms. From writing a letter in a bottle, a drama script of your journey, a narrative of your encounters looking for hidden treasure and much more! We are looking for the bravest, most imaginative and enthusiastic thinkers to embark on this creative writing adventure! Masters of Minecraft Survivor: The Australian Bush Presenter: ‘Devika’ Presenter: Michelle Graham The Minecraft workshop is set out to develop the students understanding and fluency in maker skills through the creative and building aspects of Minecraft which enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Students learn to inquiry, exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying prolemsolving skills, mathematical techniques, communication and reasoning. This course is for students taking their first steps with game design and development for primary kids. Devika is a collaboration of technology start-ups with global and social ambitions. For this amazing brand new workshop you will work towards creating amazing virtual structures. You will have opportunities to share your work and work with new friends who are also Minecraft experts. You will need to overcome special Mathcraft challenges to become a Mathcrafter, so put on your thinking caps! Mathcrafters carefully plan, think visually and are creative too. In this workshop we will explore area, perimeter, volume and mathematical models and theories that go beyond a typical stage one curriculum. Prior knowledge of Minecraft is essential for this workshop, and experience playing Minecraft using a computer keyboard will benefit you. Get ready to create something amazing! Are you a survivor? Challenge yourself and determine if you would be able to survive in the Australian bush. Could you navigate yourself out of the bush if you became lost? Would you be able to create a shelter to protect you and withstand different weather? Would you be able to collect clean water to drink? In this workshop you will be challenged, your courage tested, creativity tried and nothing left to chance. Through a range of science experiments and mathematical strategies learn different skills to help you become a survivor. At the end of the workshop students will use skills learnt and general knowledge to discover where the hidden treasure is located within the university.
