CHLAMYDIA & GONORRHEA ARE NO LAUGHING MATTER z WE ARE GENEXPERTS DID YOU KNOW? Chlamydia is the most common reported STD in the United States, while Gonnorrhea is the second most commonly reported STD. Although both diseases are curable, they may cause serious complications and potentially life-threating issues if left untreated. WHY TEST FOR CHLAMYDIA? • Many cases of chlamydia are asymptomatic so regular screening is important. Even in cases where visible symptoms may not be present, there are still many internal reproductive complications that could potentially occur. • Untreated infection with chlamydia can lead to infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain. • Pregnant women can pass along chlamydia to their children during childbirth if untreated, which can lead to the infant having neonatal ophthalmia (eye inflammation) or infantile pneumonia. CHLAMYDIA | RATES OF REPORTED CASES BY SEX WHY TEST FOR GONORRHEA? • Gonorrhea has a higher occurrence in men than in women, and many cases are asymptomatic. • Untreated gonorrhea can lead to permanent health problems in both men and women. These problems include sterility/infertility, inflammation of the pelvic/reproductive areas, and scar tissue formation. • Infection with gonorrhea could lead to increased chances of contracting other STDs, including HIV.
