1646 Main Street Brewster, MA 02631 LathamCenters Passage to a brighter future Fiscal Year 2015 Annual Report 1 A Note of Gratitude from the Board Chair I was first introduced to Latham Centers at the age of eight years old when my family admitted my sister Julie as a new resident student at Latham School. At the young age of 13, Julie’s challenges of living with Prader-Willi Syndrome, along with significant cognitive deficits, became so complex that she presented harm to herself and her needs became unmanageable at home. We struggled with whether or not we were doing the right thing by placing the care of Julie in the hands of the staff at Latham Centers—a decision that is undoubtedly difficult for any family to make. Happily, not a day goes by when I do not reflect on our good fortune in finding Latham. Looking back 30 years from the day we dropped off Julie in Brewster, we absolutely made the right decision by pushing beyond our apprehension and letting Julie become part of a wonderful community where she is liked and respected. MISSION Latham Centers compassionately and creatively helps children and adults with complex special needs, including Prader-Willi Syndrome, to lead meaningful, abundant lives. Latham Centers is a unique place in that it treats individuals with challenges versus challenged individuals while respecting their unique needs. We have seen Julie transform into a happy, well-adjusted woman. It is an understatement to say that Latham Centers has impacted our family in ways we could never have imagined. While Julie will always be a central part of our family, Latham Centers is Julie’s home away from home, and we could not imagine her in any other place. I am honored to have served on Latham’s Board of Directors for the past seven years. Moreover, I am thrilled to have served as Board Chair for the past two years. As I confidently pass off the baton to our new Fiscal Year 2016 Chair I cannot help but reflect upon this remarkable time of growth for Latham Centers. The vocational opportunities for the students and adults have expanded ten-fold as the agency innovatively organizes new, and restructures existing, work-readiness programs. As a professional in the field of educating those with special needs, as a volunteer, and most importantly, as a family member/sibling, I hold a unique partnership with Latham Centers. The organization provides a community of compassion, safety, respect and devoted care like no other. Thank you for your support and the impact that you too have in changing lives for the better, one individual at a time. We are eternally grateful. Sincerely, Amy Carroll FY15 Board Chair and Latham Sibling 2 Fiscal Year 2015 Latham Centers Board of Directors July 1, 2014–June 30, 2015 Officers: Amy Carroll, Chair Sheila Burns, Vice-Chair Debbie Cobb, Treasurer Mary Cooper, Clerk Anne McManus, President & CEO Who We Served in Fiscal Year 2015 Students in Children’s Services 51 -Students with diagnosis of Prader-Willi Syndrome 25 -Students with dual diagnosis of Developmental Disability and Mental Health Disorders - including: 26 • Reactive Attachment Disorder • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder • BiPolar Disorder • Pervasive Development Disorder • Cerebral Palsy • Autism -Age range of Students served 13-21 -Students from Massachusetts 39 -Students from Alaska, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania 12 -Day Students from local communities 2 -New Students during FY 15 11 -Male Students 25 -Female Students 26 Adults in Residential Services 52 -Adults with primary diagnosis of Prader-Willi Syndrome 40 -Adults with dual diagnosis including Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Disorders 12 -Age range of Adults served 23 -60 -Adults who lived in a Latham 24 hour Support Residence 46 -Adults who lived in a Shared Living residence 4 -Adults who lived in a Supported Living arrangement 2 -Male Residents 21 -Female Residents 29 -Adults from Massachusetts 41 -Adults from other states 11 = Connecticut – 7 = Rhode Island – 1 = Vermont - 2 = Maryland - 1 Directors: Rev. LATHAM SCHOOL Combining smart technology with an experienced teaching staff, Latham School offers students the academics, vocational programming, work opportunities, and physical activities they need to excel. Our teaching staff gears the curriculum to insure that each student can achieve their educational goals. The school offers a comprehensive residential program where staff provide structure and continuous learning opportunities. Nutrition is a particularly important component of the Latham experience and our in-house chef and kitchen staff prepare delicious and nutritious meals that keep students happy and healthy. The school program is complemented by a team of Master’s level clinicians and nursing staff nurturing spirit and body. LathamCenters PLYMOUTH Residential Sites by Town Children’s Services Adult Services WELLFLEET ORLEANS BOURNE WAREHAM DENNIS BREWSTER SANDWICH BARNSTABLE YARMOUTH HARWICH CHATHAM MASHPEE FALMOUTH ADULT SERVICES As demand for services continues, Latham has responded by opening a new home in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The young adults in this home have PWS and come to us from all over the United States. In siting this new residence, we looked for a home that was spacious and would give the residents ample room for privacy and recreation. As a result of a master planning process that began in 2013, we have begun updating our campus and will be ending FY2016 with a new 22-bedroom dormitory. This new facility will provide students with individual bedrooms and common areas for recreation and reflection. RENDERING OF THE NEW DORMITORY The program continues to develop its range of services to insure that it has a continuum of care to meet each individual’s needs. We currently have 11 group homes and 4 individuals in shared living (the individual shares a home with a non-disabled caregiver) and 2 in independent living, where individuals are provided staff support in their own home. It is our goal to insure that each individual has as many opportunities as possible to lead a full and productive life in the least restrictive setting, while being mindful of safety issues. 4 Highlights Summer: July – September 2014 nature. Latham students explored more than 200 locations in the Summertide program and our transitional classrooms this year. In August 2014, Team Latham ran the picturesque 7-mile Falmouth Road Race, raising almost $25,000. The 18 runners including staffers, parents, and donors are credited with our largest and most prosperous Falmouth Road Race team to date. Funds raised support fitness and exercise activities, such as Special Olympics, for the children and adults who reside at Latham Centers. Vocational growth and job coaching was targeted by the Board of Directors and Latham staff as a top priority in Fiscal Year 2015. Remarkably, 39 student employees at Latham School surpassed 100 hours of clocked-in paid or volunteer work time over a two-week pay period. Latham Centers’ vocational classroom and Latham Works achieved the goal of 100% student employment. Clinicians and teachers collaborated, targeting the needs of each student through creative job postings including the “Recycling Crew” (sorting skills) and “Mail and Check Delivery” (communication and social skills). Teachers saw students taking accountability for their new responsibilities and joy when taking part in paid positions. Students even suggested additional jobs such as a campus-wide printing service. The Latham Works classroom added woodworking, ornament making and rope weaving programs, and students learned new “real world” job skills related to résumé writing and interviewing. The 2015 Summertide program received grants from The Friends of Pleasant Bay and long-time donor The Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation. Off-campus student excursions included seal tours to Monomoy Island, one of many places where they learned about their Cape Cod surroundings, local animals, science and This year one of Latham’s star athletes won the Special Olympic’s Athlete of the Year award. The achievement was of special significance to this student as he came to us weighing 380 pounds and reduced his weight to 180 pounds. Autumn: October – December 2014 Latham Centers collaborated with Cape Associates on their annual Playhouse Raffle project, raising more than $13,000 for program development. Cape Associates was proud to work with Latham Centers on this incredible project; it was their largest Playhouse fundraiser run by just two Latham staff members. Because of this project, Latham increased the number of gifts received by 77%. Latham Centers also raised approximately $100,000 in our fifth and largest annual Charity Golf Classic. For the first time, all the funds raised from Angel Fund donors will help fund the future Latham Community Center at 1439 Main Street, Brewster. By December 2014, Latham Centers had raised $300,000 in gifts and pledges for the Community Center. 5 Highlights Latham Centers’ staff attended and presented at National and International conferences on PraderWilli Syndrome, obesity and hyperphagia. As experts in the field, staffers shared information about Latham’s programs and brought new ideas back to their colleagues. Our Adult residents excelled in the Fall of 2014 as Latham Lifelong Pet Care began to offer off-season reduced rates for Cape Cod residents in need of pet care services. The Morgan Foundation helped us make this pet sitting and dog walking program more affordable for pet owners through an Annual Grant. beautiful. Three of these residents graduated from Latham School in Winter 2015 and one is a Latham School alumnus who graduated in 2013. A new blog column entitled “Living and Thriving with PWS” was launched on the Latham web site. Written by James*, a Latham adult with Prader-Willi Syndrome, the writer shares what it is like to grow up with PWS, his favorite vocational and recreational activities, and how he has found success. James* has given us insight into his world while improving his writing and his ability to meet deadlines – skills he is developing to further his career goals. Latham students expanded the Latham Works program, creating new items for the annual Holiday Craft Fair. Students designed and crafted holiday ornaments with Scrabble letter tiles. These charming gifts are made with pride by the students, and exemplify fine-motor and dexterity skill development, as well as reading and writing. The vocational program’s holiday craft items included gift cards, handmade soaps and dog toys. At the student-run Craft Fair, Latham students practice customer service, mathematics, and money management skills. The Student Council voted to donate the $550 earned at the Craft Fair to the Brewster Baptist Church Food Pantry. Bobby*, a student in the Children’s Program, began paid employment off campus at the Orleans Bowling Center (OBC). As part of the team at OBC, he reliably provides weekly lane cleaning. Bobby* has excelled beyond expectations. Bobby* uses some of the career skills learned at Latham (such as clear communication and detailed cleaning) in a meaningful new role he is proud of and recognized for. Winter: January – March 2015 Latham Centers hired a Director of Vocational Services, Maura Smith, who brings experience in the community as a business owner and previous Latham consultant. She began by embarking on a career exploration journey with all of the children and adults who call Latham home. With a wait list in Adult Services admissions, Latham Centers expanded in Winter 2015, purchasing a new residential home in Plymouth. Our staff, Board members, and Latham families worked to make this dream a reality and the Plymouth location, now home to four adults, is absolutely 6 Spring: April – June 2015 Our residents were particularly encouraged to get outside and stay fit and healthy after a long winter. Latham Centers and the Cape Cod Disability Network received a pilot grant to promote physical fitness and wellness within the Adult Services program. Latham Centers, Arc of Cape Cod, and Community Connections joined forces to provide adult residents Highlights with the opportunity to improve upon their health. This program was funded by a $15,000 grant from The Community Health Network. Adult residents signed up for programs including Smoking Cessation, Staying in Shape, Healthy Eating, and Hygiene/Wellness. Each resident signed a Positive Behavioral Support Plan which outlines his or her goals, how he or she plans on maintaining/accomplishing these goals, and the incentives chosen for achieving the goal(s). The incentives, funded by The Community Health Network, ranged from a new bicycle and helmet to gym memberships. Jane*, a resident in the Adult Program, received a 10 Year Employee Recognition Award from TJ Maxx where she has proven her value over the past decade. Not only is Jane* a critical member of the TJ Maxx team, but she is a successful 60 year old resident living a healthy life with Prader-Willi Syndrome. She even finds the time to volunteer in addition to her paid employment. (Full story, page 8.) Latham Centers vocational and residential staff partnered with Agway to produce the Agway Herb Garden. Agway donated Marigold, Chamomile, Rosemary, Mint and Lavender plants to the students on Latham Campus. By June’s end the garden was planted, and it was time for the students to patiently nurture and maintain the plants. While healthy and therapeutic for our students, the garden also teaches horticultural skills, accountability and responsibility. Mastery was celebrated by students, staff, donors and the Board of Directors at our Year End Celebration in June. For the first time this event was held at the site of the future Latham Community Center. Students danced and sang, and the Latham Players Adult Theater Troupe made a memorable visit, acting out a few skits, songs, and dances. We recognized and awarded three community partners, one student, and one local official. Recipients of the community awards, Puritan Cape Cod and the Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod, worked together preparing students for the Annual Best Buddies Prom. Rogers & Gray Insurance, another community partner, was recognized for hiring one of our students and helping her to become the smiling, hard-working young woman she is. That same student, Amy*, received the President’s Award for Outstanding Vocational Achievement. Lastly, Charles Sumner, Brewster Town Administrator, was also recognized. *Names have been changed to protect privacy 7 Jane’s Story: Breaking Barriers and Exceeding Expectations by Kathy vanEsselstyn Assistant Director of Adults Services 23 Years of Service to Latham Centers As Jane looks around the decorated room, hearing cheers of congratulations, she smiles at friends and staff who have become her family over many years. Jane is celebrating her 60th birthday. For any adult, turning 60 is a milestone – for Jane, it’s monumental. She is one of the oldest living residents with Prader-Willi Syndrome in the country, and is a valued member of the Cape Cod community. Jane was diagnosed in the 1980’s with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). Already in her thirties, and after years of facing many hardships, she and her family had finally received a formal diagnosis and were apprehensive about the future. Suddenly Jane was stepping into the unknown. She had already surpassed the life-expectancy of an individual with PWS, as determined by doctors from around the world. New tests in 1987, however, now proved that with appropriate nutritional controls, the life expectancy of the PWS population could be extended. After years of hospital stays and unsuccessful residential placements, Jane and her family could finally see the light. She moved to one of Latham Centers’ adult residential homes, where she has excelled for over 20 years. 8 Dedicated staff Joanna Shea with Jane accepting awards of recognition. Staff helped Jane gain the tools she needed to succeed and meet her goals. They provided vocational support, including job coaching, health guidance that integrated a diet specific to PWS individuals and regular exercise, and emotional and behavioral supports to help in day-to-day living. Jane has been employed at the same clothing store for over ten years. This past winter she was recognized for her years of service at the Regional level, and recently was recognized by The Cape and Islands DDS Citizens Advisory Board at their Annual Breakfast. Additionally, she works at a community day program where she farms and gardens. As part of Latham’s animal care program, she enthusiastically visits with and trains our donkeys, Angus, Moonbeam, Curly and Jake. She then teaches and guides other individuals who are also in the program. Moreover, Jane spends her free time knitting beautiful, hand-made hats, scarves and other items to donate to charities such as Rosie’s Place and Goodwill, and sell in the community. It hasn’t always been an easy road for Jane; however she proves her bravery every day. After losing both her parents, Jane became her own guardian. ” Despite being diagnosed with a life threatening disorder, she has maintained a healthy weight, worked and volunteered in the community, travelled near and far and ” has never lost her humor and zest for life. With intensive small group and one-to-one supports, Latham’s care is highly specialized. For adult residents, like Jane, Latham Centers will be the first and only placement where they are able to succeed and the last place they will call home. The residents remind each of us to be grateful for what we have – our health, our families and the ability to innately trust and nurture others. 9 The Latham Community Center: A $3.1 Million Capital Campaign Three point one million dollars will afford Latham Centers residents and the Brewster Community spaces which include: • Indoor gymnasium and fitness center to meet the needs of people with special needs and the aging Cape Cod population; • Auditorium and stage for the Latham Players, Latham Centers’ Adult Residential Program Theater Troupe; • Art Room; • Technology Lab; • Vocational Center and Wood Shop; • Two transitional classrooms for students moving from children-focused to adult-focused programs; • Combined meeting spaces for both the children and adults in the Latham Program; • A Special Needs Hub for organizations within the Cape Cod Disability Network.
