Hallett’s The Bakers
Well known local family firm, Hallett’s The Bakers, is preparing to open the doors of its brand
new purpose built bakery in Paignton, sending out a positive message to manufacturing
businesses in the area.
With the help of over £280,000 of funding from NatWest, (including £190,000 from the
Bank’s dedicated Manufacturing Fund and equipment secured through the Bank’s sister
business Lombard), owners Mel and Helen Hallett have fulfilled their dream of moving the
business from rented premises in Torquay to a site of their own in Westfield, Paignton.
Now the wholesale and retail bakery, which currently employs 30 local people having
recently taken on an additional four staff, is looking forward to an expanding future, secure
in the knowledge that it has a sound base to work from. The state of the art facilities include
a newly installed mezzanine floor offering valuable additional office space and will go live on
15 November 2010.
All this seems a far cry from the business’ origins 18 years ago when Mel and Helen bought
a small craft bakery and coffee shop in Winner Street, Paignton. Over the years they have
grown from this retail base producing just bread, rolls and handmade pastries, to include
cakes, confectionary and wholesale supply to local schools, hospitals, hotels, shops and
sandwich bars. With son Christopher now on board they operate a 24 hour business but
they have remained true to the recipes and traditional methods that they started with. Their
two remaining shops in Torbay Road, Paignton and in the precinct in St. Marychurch also
ensure that their retail clients are not forgotten.
Commenting on the move to their new premises, Mel Hallett, commented: “We’re thrilled
to be moving into our own premises and Helen and I would like to thank everyone who has
helped us with the move, including our loyal customers and committed staff and Andy Rowe
our NatWest Business Manager and his colleagues who have been with us every step of
the way. Andy has shown us that NatWest, at least, is committed to supporting the local
manufacturing industry. Without the funding the Bank has provided this move just wouldn’t
have been possible.”
Andy Rowe, their locally based NatWest Business Manager, continued: “It’s great to see
Mel, Helen and their team doing so well and I’m delighted that NatWest has been able
to help their goal of purchasing their own premises become a reality. We’ve launched
a £1billion Manufacturing Fund this year specifically to support manufacturing businesses
like Hallett’s The Bakers and it’s nice to see the impact that this support can have.”
