Teaching Ideas that you may find helpful
As it is unlikely that this theme will be used in its entirety in a whole class situation, the following ideas pertain to
children being taught in a one to one situation eg children who are excluded, children who are in a special unit
through illness etc. children in hospital education, children who are being home educated.
Start by showing the power point slide show and discussing where Australia is in relation to the area where you
live. Discuss the differences and similarities to your way of life and culture.
Before you print the theme for the pupil, go through it and eliminate those which are either too easy or too
difficult. It is a good idea to print all the pages that you plan to use for the pupil and then staple them into a
booklet. I have found that the pupil responds well to this and feels excited about the work that will be done. You
need to explain to the pupil that there is an order in the book and that he/she can’t just hop about and do the bits
that look interesting.
Pages 6 – 10 Maps: Us this section as the GEOGRAPHY section of this Language across the curriculum theme.
Work through the maps and allow the pupil time to shade them. Discuss the various cities, oceans etc and illicit
from the pupil their knowledge of any of the places mentioned. the map on page 10 gives an opportunity to
discuss how time is different from east to west and why this is. I also allow the pupil access to a world map that
has the time zones on it and we work out how many hours ahead/behind Australia is from where we are in the
world. I then give some scenarios e.g. you are getting up in the morning. What time would it be in Australia? etc
etc.
Page 11 Many of the words in this story are difficult and many pupils may need assistance to read them. Assist the
pupil to sound out the words and explain the meanings of the difficult words. Then help the pupil to find the words
in the dictionary OR explain the meanings of the words via discussion and then let the pupil write down the
meanings.
Pages 13 – 18 Not all these worksheets need to be done. Choose those that are at a suitable level for your pupil.
When I teach common nouns I explain to my pupil that a common noun is something that you can usually see,
touch and maybe hold. You can put the word A in front of it and it makes sense. I ask the pupil to list as many
nouns as they can in the room where we are sitting and then we put A in from of them eg A table A Chair A
television and so on. Then discuss what proper nouns are and ask the pupil to suggest what these might be.
Explain about the capital letters and that we can recognize proper nouns by capital letters. However we must be
careful about words at the beginning of a sentence. They are not all proper nouns.
Pages 19-20 These 2 pages are very important. Ask the pupil to cut out all the sentences, headings and the picture.
Now place the headings in a suitable order. Which one is the heading? Which should be the next sub heading and
so on. Arrange the subheadings in a horizontal line across the desk. Then ask the pupil to sort through all the
sentences and place them under the suitable subheading. Once this has been done ask them to look at each group
of sentences and finally rearrange their order. Lastly then glue the sentences on 2 pages and read the sentences.
Page 38. This is a difficult alphabetical ordering exercise and a practical help has been given on page 39. All
instructions given on page 39.
NOTE: THE PAGES IN THE SAMPLE DO NOT CORRESPOND TO THE ABOVE.
THESE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE FULL THEME.

Here is a short piece of text about Australia. In it there are some
rather difficult words that you may not have come across
before. Your task is to use a dictionary to look up the meanings
of these words.
Learning objective:
use a dictionary to find the meaning of
unfamiliar words;
Australia is in the southern
hemisphere. It is actually an island but
because it is so large it is considered to
be a continent. Because Australia has
not been attached to the other
continents for millions of years it has
some very strange and interesting
animals. There are no large mammals
in Australia but there are many
different types of marsupials. The
fauna and flora of Australia are also
very interesting and different to those
found in other parts of the world.
