1. First and foremost, IMAGINATION is the ultimate requirement of this piece. Throughout,
aleatoric elements are added and individual expressiveness is essential.
2. W.K. [ ] = the War is Kind and Other Lines poem number. At the beginning, as each cue is
generically given, each singer must whisper their designated poem. If a singer comes to
the end of their poem, repeat as required. Memory of each poem could be considered.
The soloists may acquire the first pitch quietly with a tuning fork before m6.
3. m30,31 mark the first aleatoric section. Singers must create tranquil melodies with the four
notes given in their box. Any variation of these notes is acceptable, and in any rhythm
within reason. The effect should be like a lake of sound, relatively calm and placid.
ase
4. m68 marks the second aleatoric section. In this instance, the women must sing the notes
provided in the order they are provided. To make it easy, elide the note that the singer is
holding into the box, instead of starting at the beginning of the box. Only length of each
note must fluctuate. Again individual expressiveness is required. The lake of sound
should include waves now.
5. m93,98,99 marks the third aleatoric section. This is similar to the first instance in which the
singer can vary the order of notes sang, creating individual melodies.
Ple
6. m111-112. Here the women must slide individually as indicated on the last syllable of
"eternity." Singers should decrescendo as they ascend or descend at their own rate.
7. m127. The women should revert back to whispering their W.K. [ ] numbered poems.
As notated, whispering should be louder this time and slightly more agitated, again
within reason. Think about 'wind rustling through trees' here as the poems are recited.
8. m150 is the final whispering recitations of the War is Kind poetry. As before, if the end
of the individual poem is reached, repeat until the end. The effect should be slightly
eerie as the men create a cluster chord which doesn't quite resolve.
9. There are somewhat strange key elements throughout, but careful consideration of
enharmonics has revealed that the way notated is perhaps the easiest to understand.
In other words, 'don't be scared off by how it looks.'

Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind.
Because your lover threw wild hands toward the sky
And the affrighted steed ran on alone,
Do not weep.
War is kind.
