--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------* QUERY: WHO WAS DAVID NICHOLAS DALTON’S FATHER?
from Diane H Gabert, [email protected]
In the June 3, 1998 newsletter, someone stated that DAVID NICHOLAS DALTON who
married Margaret Rives and later Rebecca Westmoreland was the son of Absalom
Dalton and Nancy Poindexter. But in the June 10, 1998 newsletter, someone else
stated that he was the son of David Dalton and Christina Bostick. Could someone
please tell me which set of parents is correct?

* QUERY: MATILDA DALTON
from Diane H Gabert, [email protected]
Regarding MATILDA DALTON, who are her parents, what is her birth and death
dates? I have conflicting information and would like to clear this matter up. Was it
Elizabeth Shockley and Reuben J. Dalton or Rebecca Williams and Enos B. Dalton?
—Diane
* QUERY: HAWKINS CO. TN DALTONS
from [email protected]
Beginning about 1790, Daltons began moving into the northeast region of Tennessee,
particularly Sullivan, Hawkins, and Grainger Counties. Has anyone ever submitted
material on the Hawkins County Daltons? Also, I have heard from several people that
Reuben Anderson Dalton was the son of John Meredith Dalton of Grainger County.
However, on August 14, 1825, Meredith Dalton appeared in court and was appointed
guardian for the minor children of Carter Dalton who died before November 18, 1823.
These minor children were Tandy W., Reuben A. (who later went by the name
Anderson), and Mary Dalton. Is it possible there are two Reuben Andersons or is it
possible both are the same? If there are two Reuben Andersons, where did the
Anderson come from? Bill

The Covered Bridge of Warner, NH is dedicated to Isaac Dalton, Revolutionary War
soldier and Deacon in the village church. He is a direct descendent of Philemon
Dalton of Hampton, NH and this story is a short profile of his life in Warner. Also of
interest to our readers is an account of John Luther Dalton, Mormon Genealogist as
related by his daughter, Voyla Dalton Smith. His curiosity about family ties chartered a
course which has been followed by his descendants who now number over 4,000. He
also made the initial Dalton connections back to Wales.
The final installment of Lucy's talk on The Cambridgeshire Daltons, a list of new
members and data from Oldham,England round out this issue. Because of travel to
England, the page may be a day late in set up. While away, my computer will be out for
a complete upgrade so please hold all E-mails until after July 15.

Sherry Dalton,
[email protected]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dalton researchers,
I thought this may interest everyone that I have been in contact with
regarding Daltons from Conception Harbour, NF. A special Thank you goes to Paul
Kennedy from Plano, TX for the transcription of the 1921 Census from the area It has
been extremely helpful in confirming many facts. I have taken Paul's original census
and sorted it in alphabetical order and added astericks(***) before Notes wherever I
could supplement information.
I hope my comments on the 1921 Census provide some help. Please see
the following web site for a list of NF communities that have the 1921 census available

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6. Dalton Myth #2
Melanie Crain, Editor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Myth: A notion based more on tradition than on facts.

issues of John Dalton & the wd. Mary Newman/Brockenbrough??
—Louise
Reply:
Thanks, Louise, for providing material for the next myth. And please remember that
there is no marriage of a William Dalton and Margaret Brockenbrough. Some of the
children listed above are found in the Abingdon Parish (Gloucester Co Va) records
and are definitely listed there as the children of William and Margaret Dalton, not John
and Mary.
MYTH #2: William Dalton of Gloucester Co Va and his wife Margaret (no maiden
name known) were the parents of Virginia ancestors Samuel and Timothy.
Fact 1: William of Gloucester was born in Cambridgeshire Co, England (research of
Dr. Lucy Slater in parish records in Cambridgeshire Co. England)
DGS Journal Vol. 14 No. 2
Fact 2: William of Cambridgeshire/Gloucester died intestate (without a Will). A Will
later left by Capt. William Dalton (Jr), his son, did not survive but appears as a
fragment in a re-survey order processed for John Thruston and his wife Sarah, once
the widow of the same Capt. William Dalton (Jr).
Spotsylvania Deed Bk D: 8 Feb 1748
Fact 3: By the 1748 document above, it is stated clearly that the lands of William Sr
descended to his son Wm. Jr. In the Law of Primogeniture, this means that William Jr.
was the eldest child of William Sr. and Margaret Dalton of Gloucester Co. Va. We
cannot, then, place Timothy as older than William Jr. in the chronological list of
children; otherwise, Timothy would have inherited Wm Sr's lands.
Fact 4: The given names of Timothy and Samuel are NOT found in the
Cambridgeshire Dalton family, a family which can be traced back to the mid- or late
1500's. Names in the Gloucester family--Tyrell, Michael, and Elizabeth--are indicative
of the family back in England.
reference: Dr. Slater's article in the DGS.
To answer Louise's question about all the children she has listed in the family of
William and Margaret above, the Abingdon Parish records of Gloucester have been
salvaged in three different forms even though not one of them is the original parish
vestry records. The extant versions list baptisms for Tyrell (bapt. 1708), Elizabeth
(1711), Margaret (1713), Sarah (1716) and Michael (1719) Dalton. Notice that there is
no baptismal record for William Jr --not a factor since the parish records began about
1708, after the birth of Wm Jr. There is no baptismal record in Gloucester Co,
however, for the John, b. 1722, in Louise's list. This "new addition" (not Louise's, by
the way) to the family of Wm Sr and Margaret is probably an attempt to add in John
Dalton who was a successful merchant in Alexandria Va, a partner of John Carlyle.
John of Alexandria's date of birth is known to be about 1722. There is no support for
John as a member of the family of William and Margaret of Gloucester:
1. John of Alexandria had a brother Robert who also lived in Alexandria (and no
Robert is included in Wm and Margaret's set of children).
2. Research conducted by the Lloyd House in Alexandria Va (the historic library of this
old city), suggests that John Dalton may have been a business agent in
England for John Carlyle before coming to America (not an uncommon
business fact in colonial America).
3. John of Alexandria had children who did not generally reflect the naming patterns
of the Gloucester Co. Dalton family. John's children were named: Jane,
Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Robert, Jennie, and Catherine. (The list is not in
chronological order and my thanks to Millicent Craig who accumulated the
list of children). Only Jennie and Catherine survived to adulthood. Note that
the list does not contain the name William, a name John would certainly
have used for a son had he been a son of William of Gloucester.
4. There is no record of a Dalton family in the general area of Fairfax Co. Va. who
qualifies as John's own parents and/or siblings, other than Robert; so the
chances that John was born locally cannot be supported. The one family of
John and Rachel Dalton in Prince William Co. (next door and parent county
of Fairfax) had sons John, James, and Moses--and all three of these men
can be accounted for but not as John of Alexandria.
The list of reasons could go on, but perhaps this is enough to consider the
impossibility of John of Alexandria placed in the Gloucester Co family.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7. Pittsylvania Co. VA Research Trip
Barbara Wilson,
[email protected]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In 1992 my 85 year old Aunt, Mary Dalton Reamy, made a trip from her home in
Washington, DC to her birthplace in Sycamore, Pittsylvania Co., VA "to see the family
grave site, probably for the last time". She had told me that this grave site was on the
property of the old family home. Although the home no longer existed she knew the
graves were still intact. She could not remember exactly who was buried there but
her stories had made me want to visit this place myself in the hope that it would give
me some information on my Dalton ancestors that has eluded me. However, Aunt
Mary could not tell me how to get there and said she had been given the name of
someone who lived in the area who led her to the site as she herself could not find it
since the old house was gone.
My Daltons:
Barbara Wilson
Hannah Dalton (mother)
John B. Dalton (grandfather) m.Emma B. Updike, Pitts. Co. VA
Hester Dalton (grgrandmother) m. ?????(may never have been married), Pitts. Co. VA
Charles Patterson Dalton (grgrgrandfather) m. Mary B. Adams, Pitts.Co. VA
Thomas Dalton (grgrgrgrandfather) m. Elizabeth Patterson in 1788, Pitts. Co. VA
I have been trying to find the father of Thomas Dalton for several years. On this trip I
hoped to find a Dalton cemetery that had some records or tombstone information on
either Charles or Thomas. In April of this year I was able to make another trip to
Pittsylvania Co. myself (I had made my first trip there several years ago - mostly to the
Courthouse for records). My earlier effort to locate this family cemetery or find
someone who knew about it had failed. Fortunately, due to earlier correspondence,
this time I was able to meet with Mr. Steve Harris in Pittsylvania Co. who is a local
researcher and volunteer for the VA-NC Genealogical Society in Danville. Steve is a
Dalton descendent who had spent his youth "listening to the stories of the old folks"
and knows "where all the bodies are buried" in Pittsylvania Co. He and Melanie Crain
are doing an impressive job of trying to sort through and identify all the many Dalton
families in Pitts.Co.
Day 1 of trip
Went to Danville Library and met with Melanie Crain and Steve Harris. This is also the
home of the VA-NC Genealogical Society, and we were able to take advantage of their
many excellent books and microfilm. We spent all day hashing over ideas on
individual Daltons and Melanie graciously provided me with some copies of the work
they had done in the past. I was able to bring home the copies and try to apply to my
specific Dalton ancestors. We were not able to come to any conclusions but I feel we
did rule out some ideas to help narrow down the search.
Day 2 of trip
Met Steve and Melanie at the Chatham Courthouse. I had been there before but had
failed to look at deed books so I was able to go over the grantee index and find several
entries for my Thomas and his wife, Elizabeth.
Steve Harris then said he would take me to the Dalton cemeteries he knew. He said
he was probably the one who had taken my Aunt to the family cemetery in 1992 since
he remembered taking several elderly ladies there about that time. We had to enter
through the next door neighbor's driveway and park our car there then hike to the top
of a wooded hill. And there was my great grandmother Hester's grave, the grave of a
child born to my grandmother and grandfather, who died as an infant (I didn't even
know about this child, although my cousin did), the grave of another infant born to my
greatgrandmother's sister and another grave of a young woman in her late 20's whose
name I had never heard and who turned out to be the grandmother of another Dalton
Newsletter subscriber. She had been searching for this grave for many years. Without
Steve Harris' help I never would have found this place since you can't see it from the
main road. As we left the graveyard Steve pointed out a place where when he was
small there was another grave located in a nearby cow pasture which no longer
seems to be there. This land may have been owned by my ancestors at the time of the
death of Charles (1874) or Thomas (1850) so that may have been one or both of their
graves.
I was happy to find Hester's grave but disappointed we could not find burial places for
earlier generations. On my next trip to Pittsylvania Co. I will try and find out the
information on the land next to my Aunt's former home and maybe can come up with
who was buried there and what happened to the graves. I'm still hot on the trail of
Thomas' father (it could be one of several early Dalton brothers) and I would like to
find some more biographic information on Charles. I hope that he died late enough in
1874 to have an obituary someplace. I do feel that I accomplished quite a bit on this
research trip, especially being able to meet with other researchers in the area and
share in their efforts. I am also happy to know where Hester's grave is so other
members of my family can visit there also.

(Query - from Diane Gabert: Regarding MATILDA DALTON, who are her parents, what
is her birth and death dates?) Answer: from Don Hadrick, [email protected]
Diane,
Enos Dalton was the son of Reuben Dalton Sr (1752) as proven by a close
relationship and Reuben's will. I believe that Elizabeth Shockley was his mother, but
some questions are not completely answered. In his will Reuben refers to Elizabeth as
Enos's mother. Matilda Dalton was the daughter of Enos and Rebecca Williams.
(Rebecca was described as the most beautiful woman in Virginia). That Matilda was
the daughter of Enos is proven through Matilda husband's family Ausborn Coffey.
Matilda was born 30 Jan 1799 and died 30 Jan 1889. She was born in Grayson
County, Virginia and died in Rockcastle County, Kentucky. The birth and death dates
are said to have come from her tombstone in Rockcastle County.

* RESPONSE: REUBEN ANDERSON DALTON
from Don Hadrick, [email protected]
In response to WStevaTay inquiry in the 1 July 1998 Dalton Gang Newsletter,
concerning Reuben Anderson Dalton. I hope this helps explain some of the questions.
Bill asked: I have heard from several people that Reuben Anderson Dalton
was the son of John Meredith Dalton of Grainger county (Tennessee) However on 14
August 1825, Meredith Dalton appeared in court and was appointed guardian for the
minor children of Carter Dalton who died before November 18, 1823. These minor
children were Tandy W, Reuben A (who later went by the name Anderson), and Mary
Dalton. Is it possible there are two Reuben Andersons or is it possible both are the
same. If there are two Reuben Andersons, where did the Anderson come from?
First let me say that I don't know where the name Anderson came from, but
there were more than one Reuben Anderson Dalton. The first Reuben Anderson was
the son of Enos Dalton and Rebecca Williams. He was born abt 1799 and married
Arlena Clark. They had a son Reuben Anderson born in 1850.
The Reuben Anderson Dalton in question was the son of John Meredith
Dalton and Delphia Rucker. He was born 19 February 1815, married Sarah Rucker
and fathered 12 children. Reuben Anderson and Sarah Rucker were too closely
related. Sarah was the daughter of William Rucker, brother to Delphia Rucker who
was Reuben Anderson's mother. William Rucker had married Ruth Dodson and Ruth
Dodson was the daughter of Mary Polly Dalton and Samuel Dodson. Mary Polly was
the sister of John Meredith. Reuben Anderson was a soldier in the Civil War and
served in Company K, 37th Tennessee Infantry. In October 1864, near Rogersville,
Tennessee, he was thrown from a horse where he hurt his back and never fully
recovered from his injury. In Reuben's application for pension benefits dated 6 July
1891, he states he has 11 children living and that 2 girls and 4 of the boys are deaf
and dumb.
Carter Dalton and Matilda Witcher had three children. (Matilda had two
additional children after Carter's death and each had the Dalton name)
There was:
1. Tandy Witcher Dalton, who was born 18 November 1818 and is well
documented with many wives/children and mistresses.
2. Mary Ann Dalton, born 5 October 1823 and married Martin Myers.
3. Anderson Dalton was born 13 Mar 1821 and died 13 Apr 1896.
Carter Dalton died young and John Meredith Dalton--usually called Meredith--was
placed as guardian of Carter's children. John Meredith died in 1834. I believe at that
time the children of Carter were farmed out. Tandy W was a farm laborer on the farm
of Henry Hipshire Sr. In 1849, Delphia Dalton, Meredith's widow died and her
remaining unmarried children were placed under the guardianship of her son John W
Dalton. Matilda, Carter's widow did not remarry and lived with her daughter Nancy
who married Enoch Mobley. Both Nancy and Matilda outlived Enoch.
There are not many people who know about Anderson Dalton, mainly
because he had no children that carried his name. Some people have Anderson
married to Mary Davidson, but her children, Jim H, 1862, Anderson 1866, and Viney
1868, all had the Davidson name. That a long term relationship between Anderson
and Mary Davidson did exist is not in doubt. However, Anderson also had a long term
relationship with Mary Mae Adams, who never married. Mary Mae was involved in
several land transaction with Anderson and may have had four children by him. One
Melvina Adams was my G-G Grandmother. Hannah Adams, the daughter of Mary
Adams had Anderson Dalton put on her birth certificate as her father. Anderson is also
credited with fathering a daughter by Louise Hipshire named Sarah Jane Hipshire.
Anderson Dalton was involved in several land transactions with his friend
Nathan Whitsett. Nathan died in 1842 and his widow soon remarried and headed
west with her new husband. Alfred Whitsett of North Carolina, the father of Nathan,
became guardian of Nathan's two daughters Sarah and Nancy Whitsett. In 1854,
Nancy Whitsett the oldest daughter married Carter Dalton, the son of Tandy W Dalton,
Anderson's brother. In September 1855, after the death of Alfred Whitsett, Anderson
Dalton, became the guardian of Sarah Whitsett. He made several trips to Rockingham
county, North Carolina to bring Nancy and Sarah's belongings to Tennessee. There
was 25 acres of land and 4 slaves sold with the proceeds of $1,261.56 given to each
girl. Carter Dalton died young in 1877 and Tandy Witcher Dalton, his father, was
appointed guardian of his daughter-in-law Nancy and her children. He did not guard
well enough because in 1880, Nancy gave birth to Milton C Dalton, the son of
Anderson Dalton, Tandy's brother. After Anderson, Tandy did take care of Nancy, and
she gave birth to his son Charles S Dalton in 1883.

have been old Reuben Anderson Dalton (1799) as he was still in Grainger
county as late as 1850, but I suspect that it was Reuben Anderson, the son of
John Meredith Dalton as he was married in 1838.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------13. A Letter Discovered
Tina Webster, [email protected]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Part of my initial information came from Elizabeth Dalton ([email protected]). When she
had advertised in the Dalton Newsletter a few months ago about having some
Marriage Licenses, I recognized my GGrandfather and GGrandmother. Joseph
Charles and Julia Ann Dalton. When she answered, she sent me some information
she had remembered from the 1860 census for Scotland Co, Missouri. That gave me
the names of Joseph's parents and informed me that he was actually born in Illinois.
I passed this info to my mother, [email protected] (new member last week), which
is why she caught the names in the following letter.
My Grandmother (Alta E. (Leatherman) Dalton) had started to do some of the family
tree before she passed away in 1990. She had given mom the letters and papers that
she had gathered before she died. Below is from a Letter I found among My Mother's
(Alta's) Things. I believe it is from a daughter of Alice Dalton but I am not sure.
The letter reads (punctuation and spelling revised) as follows:
William Carrell Dalton
Indiana -Virginia
William's wife came to Carthage Illinois when she was 15 and 1851; they moved near
Greensburg Mo. 1855. Their Children:
1. Talbert Dalton
7. Ebeer Lewis Dalton
2. Tilden Dalton
8. Joseph Charles
3. Port Dalton
9. James Owens Dalton
4. George Thomas Dalton
10. Mary Viola Dalton
5. Robert A Dalton
11. Alice Virginia Dalton
6. Katherene Dalton
12. Olive May Dalton
13. Benjamin Franklin Dalton, b. 13 Feb 1874; d. Oct 16 1952
Benjamin Franklin Dalton married Clara Small. Their Children:
Floyd Carrell Dalton
Retha Viola Dalton
Curtis Edmon Dalton
Harrell Benjamin Dalton
Joe and Frank, Tilden and the rest of the boys' grandparents were John Dalton and his
wife Ellen Katherene.
Mom's grandfather was John Dalton, but her grandmother's last name was Augle. This
all was sent to me by the wife of Floyd Dalton's oldest boy (Frank Dalton ) They are
separated, and he is married again, has been for yrs. And he lives in Texas. And she
wrote that there wasn't a better man living or dead who is better than Frank, and I
believe her.
Aunt Ollie married my mom's brother John Dalton. Their children :
Retha, Rosie, Grover, Carroll, Fred, Mack, Lester, Blanch.
Carroll married Irene Dalton (NO Relation). Grover married a woman. After he died,
Fred married her. I wrote to her. I guess at her age she has passed away by now. Mack
was killed by a team of horses while we were there in Mo. He was about 14. He was
harrowing some ground while Uncle John was in town. The horses ran away, drug him
under the Harrow. He died after about a week.
Charlie's Grandpa and my Grandpa were half brothers.
So by by now
Irene
Frank and Tilden married sisters:
Frank Dalton married Clara Small
Tilden Dalton married Retha Small. They had no children. She died when I was small.
I can remember seeing her.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------16. Dalton Myth #3
Melanie Crain, Editor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MYTH # 3: From Lucy Henderson Horton's book, Family History, published in 1922
and the source of many of today's myths:
"The colonists, John and William Dalton, brothers, came to America between 1685 and
1690, settling first in Gloucester county, Va."
Fact 1. No ship's manifest has been found for the arrival of these two men in the
company of one another. No headright record combines both men in one claim.
Fact 2. No public record has been found for any John Dalton in Gloucester Co. Va for
this time period.
Fact 3: William Dalton who, with his family, settled in Gloucester left no reason to
believe that he had a contemporary (or brother) by the name of Dalton. William's son,
Capt. William Dalton, also did not suggest any acquaintance with a John Dalton. The
only potential colonist by that name was John Dalton of Richmond Co. The records in
Richmond are happily in tact and do not support this myth, either.
Regarding myths: Myths may contain correct information in them even though they are
usually embellished with some fantasy. If anyone has in their possession public
records which prove the "Facts" above to be wrong, the entire Dalton clan will be
forever grateful. This is, in fact, the very intent of genealogy: to search out the "correct"
facts, not the right or wrong facts. As more records become available, part of our work
is modifying the old data.

Found a new cousin (Jimmy Bryant = [email protected]) awhile back who is
researching Daltons just as I am. I met him last weekend and he said to let you know
that I was interested in receiving the Dalton Newsletter and to mention the Dalton List.
Please put me on any mailing lists that are about the Daltons. I am supposedly related
to the Dalton Gang. But then again I suppose any Dalton says that. I was told by my
aunt that she remembers my grandfather (Henry Brooks Dalton) telling her about the
time the Daltons rode up to his house and his father (Thomas Bird Dalton) would not
let them come in. He told them to go away. I believe that this was when they were on
their way to the bank in Coffeeville. I am descended from Claiborn Dalton and
Elizabeth Weatherford just to let you know what my line is. Any help in locating more
ancestors would be appreciated

sent by Don Hadrick, [email protected]
I read with interest the article about Dalton Myths in the last issue of the
Dalton Gang newsletter dealing with the children of William Dalton and Margaret
(Brockenbrough?).
I am hesitant to write about the early Daltons of Virginia because I may be
the one responsible for information being passed on that identifies Samuel Sr and
Timothy Sr as children of old William. I wrote an article speculating on the possibility
that William the elder was also the father of Timothy Sr and Samuel Sr., so it could be
that some have taken that as fact.
Yet, I have to say that I am one who is not ready to give up the idea that the
early Daltons of Virginia were related. I don't believe that naming patterns or lack
thereof is an argument worth considering. There are too many factors involved in the
naming of children for us to eliminate possibilities simply because the name does not
appear in the Father’s family.
I would like to ask some questions that perhaps one or more of our readers
know the answer.
1. Can it be proven that Margaret Brockenbrough was the wife of William Dalton the
elder? We know that Margaret Brockenbrough was the daughter of William and Mary
Newman Brockenbrough. We also know that John Dalton married Mary Newman
Brockenbrough, the widow of William Brockenbrough in 1702. If in fact William Dalton
married John Dalton's step daughter does this not show that John and William Dalton
were at least acquainted?
2. How many Daltons were there in Virginia between 1650-1700 that were adults?
3. We know that William Dalton, the son of William Dalton and Margaret was the first
born son based on his being given 2/3 of his fathers property by law. Why do we
assume that both Samuel Sr and Timothy Sr were born before William? Does anyone
know when William was born? If William was born after 1699, it would effectively
eliminate the possibility of Samuel and Timothy as children of old William.
4. Probably most telling to me that some family relationship existed between Samuel
Dalton Sr and old William Dalton occurred in 1765. Samuel Dalton Sr., gave power of
attorney to his son (another) William Dalton to convey to Thomas Walker 893 acres of
land on Buck Mountain Creek in Albemarle County. This was part of the original land
purchased by William Dalton, the elder, and passed on to his son William Dalton, the
younger, who left it to his wife Sarah Wynne. After William Dalton, the younger, died in
1733, Sarah his widow married Herbert Haynes second, and third she married John
Thurston. In 1768 Sarah Wynne Dalton Haynes Thurston brought suit to recover the
land which was either being sold or had been sold by Samuel Dalton Sr., via his son
William Dalton to Thomas Walker. To the best of my knowledge, no one has been
able to determine the outcome of this dispute, or why Samuel Dalton Sr. considered it
his property. Someone who can solve this problem may find a clue as to the
relationship between Samuel Sr. and old William.
—Don Hadrick
Editor: Since Don is responding to my posting of the myths, I will answer his questions
at this time. But please, feel free to send in YOUR answers. The only request is that
you include supporting evidence for your answers—that's how myths are clarified.
DON's Question 1: "Can it be proven that William Dalton married Margaret
Brockenbrough?"
MELANIE: No marriage record yet found in England or in the colonies or in
Gloucester Co Va for William and his wife Margaret...so, until such a record or a family
reference is located, we don't know the maiden name for the wife of William Dalton
who lived in Gloucester Co. Since William of Gloucester came from Cambridgeshire
and the Brockenbroughs were not from that area, the likelihood of this marriage is slim.
DON - Question 1: "We know that Margaret Brockenbrough was the daughter of
William and Mary Newman Brockenbrough."
MELANIE: These are the children born to William and Mary Newman Brockenbrough:
1. Austin b. 1685, d. Apr 1717, m. Mary Metcalfe 1714
(b. & m.- King, Marriages of Richmond County Va 1668-1853, p. 24.
d.- Headley, Wills of Richmond Co Va 1699-1800, p. 36)
2. William b. 10 Nov 1687 d. 25 Jan 1733 no marriage
(b. & d. - King, Registers of North Farnham Parish 1663-1814, p. 21; Will
probated Richmond Co. 4 Feb 1733)
3. Newman b. ? d. 15 May 1742, m. 1) Sarah Heale 1715, 2) Catherine
Gwynn (d. - King, Registers of North Farnham Parish, p. 21)
4. ?daughter Elizabeth? (possibly married Thomas Dickenson)
I have never seen a Margaret listed as the daughter of William and Mary
Brockenbrough. Can you share your records for this, Don?
DON - Question 2. " How many Daltons were there in Virginia between 1650-1700 that
were adults?"
MELANIE: I count 14 in my records:
John Dalton, 1652 headright of Henry Pitt
(Cavaliers & Pioneers I, p. 270)
John Dalton, 1652 headright of Nicholas George, T. Taberer, Humphrey Clarke (C&P

DON - Question 3: "Why do we assume that both Samuel Sr and Timothy Sr were
born before William? Does anyone know when William was born? "
MELANIE: My reply to Louise two weeks ago placed Samuel Sr. as a second child in
the family line IF he were William Sr's son. But no matter: We haven't one piece of
documentation which combines the names of William of Gloucester with Samuel Sr or
Timothy Sr or any Dalton males other than William Jr, Tyrell, Michael. We can't create
family histories out of "maybes."
DON - Question 4: "Samuel Dalton Sr., gave power of attorney to his son (another)
William Dalton to convey to Thomas Walker 893 acres of land on Buck Mountain
Creek in Albemarle County. This was part of the original land purchased by William
Dalton, the elder, and passed on to his son William Dalton, the younger, who left it to
his wife Sarah Wynne...To the best of my knowledge, no one has been able to
determine the outcome of this dispute, or why Samuel Dalton Sr. considered it his
property. Someone who can solve this problem may find a clue as to the relationship
between Samuel Sr. and old William."
MELANIE: Here are the three deeds which describe the 893 acres on Buck Mountain
Creek:
#1 26 Apr 1750 Deed: Rev. Robert Barrett to Samuel Dalton, two tracts of land
containing 400 acres each which Barrett bought from John Lidderdale in
1740.
Louisa DB A: 394-395
(total 800 acres)
#2 16 Aug 1756 Patent: Samuel Dolton, 93 acres on both sides Buck Mountain Creek
adjacent John Snow & Samuel Garlix. Va Patent Bk 32: 102 (total 93
acres)
#3 22 Aug 1766: William Dolton Eldest son...of Samuel Dolton, late of Fredericksville
[Parish] in the County of Albemarle, of the one part & Thomas Walker...of the
other part:
Whereas the said Samuel Dolton by a certain Letter of Attorney dated the
fourteenth day of November...one thousand seven hundred & sixty five...did
Impower & authorize his said attorney to Transact his business...particularly
to convey unto the said Thomas Walker...eight hundred & ninety three acres
of Land lying on both sides of Buck Mountain Creek....these several Tracts
...that is to say two Several Tracts of four hundred acres each granted by
Patent...unto John Lidderdale & Elizabeth his wife & by them conveyed to
Robert Barrett..and said Barrett conveyed to same Samuel Dolton & also one
other Tract or parcel of Ninety three acres bearing date on the seventeenth
day of August one thousand seven hundred & Fifty six...
(Albemarle DB 4: 360)
The land which William Sr of Gloucester bought in Spotsylvania Co never resided in
Louisa or Albemarle Counties where all of Samuel Sr's land was. The Wm Gloucester
land was on the Po River, south of today's Fredericksburg and quite close to Interstate
95. The 1768 record in Spotsylvania Co. is a request to have a re-survey performed
on land which was left to Sarah Mynne Dalton back when she was Capt. William
Dalton's relict. If there was contention regarding this land in 1768, it was a dispute over
property lines but not over ownership.
Summary: Did Samuel and Timothy Sr descend from William of Gloucester?
My research has continued to say, "No."

Melanie Crain, Editor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Myth: Winston's Journal is written on the back of Timothy Dalton Jr's 1759 patent.
Fact: Your editor, having examined both, can assure you that Winston's Journal was
written in a sewn account-sized book. Timothy's patent on true parchment is not
attached in any way to Winston's Register. In fact, we would not have half the
information Winston left us had he used the patent—not enough room!

fn 1 The road orders contained in the first Louisa County Court Order Book covering
the period 1742-1748 are the only extant evidence concerning the early roads of the
county since there are no surviving Order Books for the period, 1748-1766, and since
the early Hanover records have been destroyed.
fn 2 Processioning was a system of marking and renewing property boundary lines
and was required every four years.

Sarah filed for divorce in 1880 because, she stated in the legal papers, Elijah had an
ongoing affair with a Phoebe A. Smith of Council Bluffs. He deserted Sarah for
Phoebe after the children were grown. However, my mother found a record later that
stated Sarah eventually had the divorce proceedings dismissed. After Elijah left
Sarah, we aren't sure what became of him, except mention was made in the obituary
of their daughter, Mary Angeline.
ELIJAH DALTON
Elijah Dalton was born about 1816 near Richmond in Estill Co. Kentucky.
According to information obtained from the book, Epperson Family of Albemarle
County, Virginia, the roots of the Dalton family go back to England. Elijah was one of
twelve children of Naham Isham Dalton (b. 1771 Albemarle Co. VA married on
1/20/1794 in VA) and Elizabeth Thompson Walton (b. 1780 in Scotland), the daughter
of Richmond Walton. Elijah's sister, Elizabeth Dalton, married Pedro Epperson, and
Nancy Dalton married his brother, Elias Epperson.
Apparently the Epperson family and the Dalton family left Albemarle County,
VA, by wagon train about 1801-1803 and went through Tennessee. They arrived in
Kentucky about 1812-1826. The families knew each other, and these marriages
started combining the two families. The story then goes that the Dalton and Epperson
families went together to Indiana. It was in Crawfordsville (Montgomery County)
Indiana, that Elijah Dalton married (on the 14th of June 1836) Sarah Nix (or Nicks [I
have also seen the name Potts? but most say Nix or Nicks]). They were still in Cole
Creek Twp. of Montgomery Co, IN, in 1840.
Census records of 1840 show Elijah Dalton and wife and 1 child in
Montgomery County, Cole Creek Township, Indiana. The 1850 census of DeKalb
County, MO, showed Elijah Sara and 6 children living there. In 1851, Elijah was
found living in Mills County, Iowa (Oak Twp) 4 miles north of Coonville (now
Glenwood) on the road to Kanesville (now Co. Bluffs). He purchased the SW 1/4 of
NW 1/4 and NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 Section 26 T73 R43 on 13 June 1853, the year the
Land Office opened in Mills Co., IA.
Elijah kept a tavern or inn and stage station, and was engaged in agricultural
freighting. This inn was a stopping place for emigrants, who at certain seasons of the
year passed by the place in huge numbers, westward bound.
Elijah & Sarah had 9 children. The names we have are:
John , b. Indiana 1840
George W., b. Indiana 20 Mar 1871, d. 1911, married Julia Britain
Francis, b. Indiana 1843
Margaret, b. 1845, m. David McCluer

died 15 Aug 1885 in St. Joseph, MO, and Sarah Dalton on 10 June 1895 in Mills
Co.Iowa.
The 1850 census of DeKalb Co., Missouri, shows Elijah (Doltan) 29 and
Sarah S. 31, both born in Kentucky. John 10, George 6, Francis 4, Margaret 3, Eliza
2, James 4 months. In the same census, it shows Elijah's brother, Francis and wife
Biddy also in DeKalb, Co, Mo.
Elijah and Francis's father, Naham Dalton, was one of ten children of David
Dalton, b. 1740 in VA and Susannah (Davis) Dalton, b. 1745 in VA. David Dalton was
one of thirteen children of Samuel and Ann Dalton.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------33. Myth #5
Melanie Crain, Editor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Timothy and Philemon Dalton, brothers who came to New England in the early 1600's,
were early ancestors of the Timothy and Samuel Dalton of 18th century Virginia.
Fact: The Rev. Timothy Dalton of NH did not have descendants from all that can be
surmised. Philemon's son Samuel did have a family, but it is a leap of faith to
associate the two geographic branches just because they used the same names--thus
far there has not been found a document, a loose record, or a private paper that
connects these two early Dalton groups.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------37. Myth #6
Melanie Crain, Editor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MYTH # 6: Samuel Dalton Sr was a brother of John Dalton, merchant of Alexandria
This myth is found in Lucy Henderson Horton's book, Family History, on page 22:
The biography of Archelaus Hughes, husband of Mary Dalton daughter of Samuel
Dalton of Mayo:
"Dr. Robert Hunter Dalton, the family chronicler, who was born and reared in
Rockingham county, N.C., which is near Patrick county, Va., was often at
"Hughesville." He speaks of attending the wife of Col. Archelaus Hughes as
a physician, "Aunt Mollie Hughes." Dr. R. H. Dalton says that Col. Archelaus
Hughes held some civil office under George Washington's administration as
President. . . She [Mary Dalton Hughes] had had the honor of knowing
George Washington in his home at Mount Vernon when she would visit her
uncle, John Dalton, at Alexandria."
Fact 1. No record has been found of any contact between John of Alexandria and
Archelaus Hughes or Mary (Dalton) Hughes
Fact 2. No record of any contact between John of Alexandria and any of the other
Daltons in Virginia
Fact 3. Robert Hunter Dalton, b. 1805, left NC in 1835; he later wrote his manuscript
above in the 1870's
Fact 4. Mary (Dalton) Hughes b. abt 1748 m. Hughes 1769, d. 1841 or 1848
Fact 5. Archelaus Hughes d. 1798
Fact 6. John of Alexandria d. 1777, prior to George Washington being elected
President on 6 Apr 1789
Fact 7. Samuel Sr. was born about 1699 (see J. Tracy Walker's article below); John
Dalton of Alexandria was born about 1722. Not only is there a sizeable
number of years between the births of these two men, but for "brothers" they
certainly seemed to ignore one another. From the dates and instances
above, it is difficult to put together the family structure suggested by Robert
Hunter Dalton via Mrs. Horton. Play with the dates and see if they can be
logically arranged to produce the same picture that Dr. Dalton painted.

Fred Irvine, [email protected]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The following information came from Daveda Bundy, [email protected]. It is good
source data for those of us who are researching our Irish Dalton's.
Source 1 = Elizabeth Byrne of Ballinacarrow, Rath conrath, Westmeath, Ireland
[I have edited it somewhat.]
Early in the 12th century, D'Altons came to Westmeath at the head of a company of
soldiers from the continent of Europe, either Austria or Luxembourg. They settled in the
Moat of Rathconorath. Approximately 100 years later, the family owned the Townland
of Ballinacarrow where they built a castle. In later years, as the family grew, they built
castles at Carn Bolavilish, Killare, Ballymacallin, and Mount Dalton near Rathconrath,
Milltown. The Dalton's were a Catholic family, and during Penal there were 3 Dalton
Irish priests in Meath (Lawrence of Killare in 1695, James of Ballymarallin in 1698, and
Garret of Carne in 1676). The chief of the Dalton Clan, Lord Dalton, lived in Mount
Dalton. he is still known for the kindness/help he gave people during the famine years.
In the 1700's, two brothers lived on Mount Dalton, General James Dalton and Count
Richard Dalton who was also Governor of the Netherlands (married to Princess Marie
Teresa of Luxembourg. In 1780 the brothers built a spire on the site of the old pagan
fort. The spire contained a history of the family as well as plaques from Empress Marie
Teresa, Emperor Joseph II, and George III. The spire was destroyed but people
interested in Dalton History still come to Rathconrath as well as Mount Dalton.

The traditions of this family (Dalton's), from France to Ireland, as preserved in the
Office of the Arms, records Walter Dalton to have been its founder; that he secretly
married a daughter of Louis VII, The King of France. And having incurred this
Monarch's wrath, fled to England, whence he passed with Henry II, on the invasion of
Ireland. He early acquired possessions in the western part of Meath, known as the
district of Teffia, in which he and his descendants founded religious houses and built
castles. His only son, Philip was father of 3 sons - Nicholas, John, and Philip Jr, from
whom all of the Dalton's have descended. From Nicholas came the Dalton's of
Ballymore, Rowlandstown, Ballycarrow, Milltown, Molinmecham, Dalystown, and
Dundonneli. from John sprang the Noughwell line and from Philip the Emporer line.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------40. Calculating Relationships
Judy Roberts, [email protected]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fellow researchers -------I have another way of explaining family relationships which I think makes the
relationships clear.
First Cousins share common grandparents
Second Cousins share great-grandparents
Third Cousins share great-great-grandparents
Fourth Cousins share g-g-g-grandparents
Fifth Cousins share 4g-grandparents
Etc.
The "once-removed", etc. occurs when two individuals differ in the number of
generations from the common ancestor. If the great-grandparent of one individual is
the great-great grandparent of the second individual, the two are Second Cousins,
Once-Removed.
1. To calculate the relationship, find the closest common ancestor.
2. Determine the degree of "cousinship" from the above table or a continuation of it.
3. Determine the number of generations that the more distant is individual further
removed from the common ancestor. This is the number of "Times
Removed".
Example:
An individual's 4g-grandparent is the second individual's 6g-grandparent. They are
Fifth Cousins, (share 4g-gp), Twice-Removed (6g-gp - 4g-gp).
Note: Genealogies which number individuals using the Modified Henry System,
permit calculating the relationship directly from the individual's numbers. In the
Modified Henry System, each individual's number represents his family line in the
family being discussed. The number of digits is the number of generations from the
first listed ancestor. The value of a digit represents the birth order, (when known), with
a, b, c, etc representing children 10, 11 and 12 (for larger families). Letters at the end
of the alphabet may be used when birth-order is unknown. A "." is often used to
provide a break every 5 generations to aid in counting.
Example: Two individual's # 143a6.84. and 14358.1246. They share the first three
generation (to 143.). # 143 is the 2g-gp of the older individual and the 4g-gp of the
second individual. This makes them Third Cousins, Twice-Removed.
Thanks to Cynthia Brott Biasca who used this system in her book, Descendants of
Albert and Arent Andriessen Bratt, and explained it so well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hope the following information will help one of the Dalton's searching for AM REV
Soldiers.
Have some information on the DOLTONS from Va who served in the Rev. War. I also
have a question. If I know a Bradley Dolton served in the 14th Virginia Regiment of the
Continental Line ( p. 230, Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, Soldiers,
Sailors, Marines 1775-1783 by John H. Gwathmey), where can I go next to find out
about the 14 VA REG., of the CL? Who were the soldiers in this unit, leaders, what
area did they enlist from, what age was this person etc.? How can I use this
information and find out more about the Bradley Dolton.
How can I expand this search for additional information on this Bradley DOLTON?
Can anyone offer me any ideas? Another Dalton family researcher is willing to look for
information in VA but we don't know where to go or how to get started. Does anyone
else have any additional resources on this man Bradley DOLTON. Note the DOLTON
spelling is used for a line of DOLTONS in the Register as well. HELP!
