Greek and Latin Roots
Unit 8: And Your Name Is?
ELAGSE5L4b: Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes
and roots as clues to the meaning of a word.
Students must know how to spell each word, the definition, and how it
would be used in context in a sentence.

similar meaning as another word in the same
language
5) antonym (n) - a word with a meaning that is
opposite to the meaning of another word

7) acronym (n) -a name for something that is
formed from the first letter of each of the
words in a title
8) pseudonym (n) - a name a person, such as a
writer, uses instead of his or her real name
9) hostile (adj) - not friendly; having or showing
unfriendly feelings; harsh or unpleasant
10) hostage (n) – a person who is captured by
someone who demands that certain things be
done before the captured person is freed.
Reading
We will begin to work on figurative language
focusing on similes and metaphors. We will
start reading the book Maniac Magee. We
will read chapters 1-10 this week and next
week.
ELA
We will work with correlative conjunctions.
We will also review synonyms, antonyms,
and homographs.
Writing
We will be learning about informative
writing. Students will be researching a
topic of choice this week and next week.

FALL CELEBRATION
October 28th, 2016
Only those children that earn the
celebration will get to wear a
costume and participate.
You can do it!
Students must earn 50 positive Dojo points
and no more than 15 negative Dojo points and
have no office referrals to attend the fall
celebration.
Math, Science, and Social Studies
Weeks of: October 03 and 10, 2016
We will work on rounding decimals as well as adding and
subtracting them using the basic algorithm and base 10 models.
We will have a test over all of unit 2 on Friday, October 14th.
CCGPS skills

Use place value understanding to round decimals up to the
hundredths place.

Add and subtract decimals to the thousandths place using
estimation, base 10 models, and the standard algorithm
Science
We will wrap up our Earth Science unit by
doing some experiments that model
weathering and erosion by wind, water,
and ice.
Science projects are due Wednesday,
October 5th.
After Fall Break we will go back to Social
Studies and begin to discuss what life was
like in the South after the Civil War.
Math homework is given most every night, Monday thru Thursday.

reminders. If you need log in information for either one, please
let me know.
Please make sure your child is reviewing the division facts from 09. Our next math challenge will be in January. Students must
answer 81 problems out of 90.



