Cornerstone Ephesians 2:20 “…built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” WEEK 5 TERM 1 25 FEBRUARY 2016 WHAT’S ON Please check the online calendar for the most up-to-date details Carpe Annum (Seize the year) Friday 4 March We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. Tuesday 8 March Edith Lovejoy Pierce I love the ritual of taking down the old calendar and putting up the new one each New Year’s Day. It’s a tradition I cling to even in an age where print calendars have been replaced by smartphone schedules and electronic diaries. The new, pristine calendar crisply pronouncing the birth of a new year holds so much promise. Uncluttered weeks and months lie ahead; optimism and opportunity beckon from each numbered white square. The return to school reinforces this enthusiastic anticipation of the year ahead. Children come bounding through the gates, fresh-faced and spilling summer vitality across the playground. Teachers, refreshed and ready to go, buzz with ideas and projects for the year. At St Peters this year, this energy was reinforced by the soundtrack of hammering and drilling that rang across the concourse, heralding the completion of new learning spaces. The Performing Arts Building is now finished, and after a day of moving, the performing arts teachers are in residence and relishing their new home. The Hub is nearing completion and sneak previews confirm that this space will quickly become the heart of the school. Sue Grotherr, P - Year 12 Curriculum Coordinator But new projects aren’t confined to buildings. (We would be a very dull school if they were!) Exciting classroom initiatives are being implemented to keep students engaged and provide them with the skills and knowledge they will need to negotiate the world of the 21st century. These include: • The implementation of a Curriculum Innovation project in Junior High; • A continuation of the focus on writing in Primary School through the Six Traits of Good Writing program; • A continued focus on the development of literacy skills in Primary School and Junior High • The development of technological skills, including computer coding, across the school; • Increased extra-curricular opportunities for students to participate in events that nurture and extend their talents both in the classroom and outside school; and • Participation in a range of trials focused on the planning and implementation of the new senior syllabuses. We are in for a busy and dynamic year. Come December, our 2016 calendar will confirm we are a community that thinks creatively, aims higher, embraces opportunities, works together for the common good and constantly thanks God for his bountiful blessings. While their work is mainly focussed on the Indooroopilly school, they will occasionally also visit at Springfield. They are from the Lutheran Church in Germany and their presence is a witness to the international connectedness of our school and church. I have asked them to introduce themselves to you here, when you see them – please say hello! Special visitors at the Kindy Kindy welcomed special visitors from Malaysia on Thursday who were looking at our Kindy and Prep as they are starting their own early childhood centre. Bishop Aaron and Destiny enjoyed their visit and learnt much from their time with us. Hi, we’re Deborah and Daniel from Germany where we’re studying Religious Education and Parish Work. As part of our studies we have to complete an internship. We thought it would be a little bit boring to do this in our familiar environment in Moritzburg, Germany. So now we’re here at St Peters in Brisbane for the next six months to work together with the chaplaincy team, looking around, learning more about you and your school and working with the students of St Peters. We hope we will have a good time here and we will bring some ideas, games and music, for lunch time groups, St Peters@6 and other opportunities. We both love music and play the guitar and piano. We also are keen to learn about the Australian way of schooling, to improve our English and get to know Australia a little. We are also looking forward to get to know the Springfield school and the people there. Please say hello – we are always happy to chat to you. During this time Mr Appleby and his band, Cheap Fakes, will be undertaking a tour of New Zealand in support of their new album. For anyone interested, the following youtube clips are available: Making of the album: https://youtu.be/zjnR5f3q0BY Their most recent single and video clip: ‘Baby It’s a Good Song’ https://youtu.be/j51-wBjdBZo Thursday last week, three of our Year 12 French students (Johanna Lambert, Emma Wilson and Kevin Nguyen) participated in UQ’s ‘Taste of French’ afternoon and evening. At this event, students were immersed in language activities and had the opportunity to meet students from a number of different schools in Queensland. Although, at times, they felt out of their comfort zone, all three reported back that it was enjoyable. Well done, Year 12s! The French Film Festival is almost here! On 10 March the Year 11 and Year 12 French students will be going on an excursion to see the movie Les Chevaliers Blancs (‘White Knights’). This is a powerful movie, which is set in an unnamed African country and concerns the efforts of a French NGO to rescue orphans. This film ties in to themes covered in Term 4 this year, as well as having a cross curricular link with Legal Studies as Human Rights Laws are considered. Students who have not returned their permission slip are reminded that this is due by Monday, 29th February. Many thanks to the families of Year 10 French students (and 1 Year 11 French student), who have agreed to host a French student from our sister school, Lycée St Vincent in Senlis, France in July. There will be three French girls and one French boy for the first three weeks of Term 3, who will be attending classes at our school. In return, we have three of our Year 11 students staying in France over the September holidays. A final note, any students in Years 10 – 12 who are interested in participating in a tour in September with St Peters Indooroopilly, please contact Mme Morgan as soon as possible. An email will be forwarded to parents of French students soon. There are limited spaces available. During Mr Appleby’s absence, private tuition, band rehearsals and Yr 5 MEB lessons will be taken by Mr Declan Kenrick. Mr Kenrick is a graduate of QUT and UQ, and is a registered teacher. He is also a professional musician. Welcome Mr Kenrick, we hope you enjoy your time with us WHERE CAN I FIND CORNERSTONE ONLINE? Good luck to all boys as they play St Pat’s this weekend. Congratulations to all students who participated and represented their houses last Friday. The day will go down as one of the best swim carnivals St Peters Springfield has had and is a credit to not only the House Captains and Vice Captains, but to all students who contributed to the day. Special mention to our Year 12 students who lead the day brilliantly. All results will be finalised after the Years 4 – 6 Carnival this Friday. A big thank you to all staff for your efforts throughout the day. Well done! St Peters 5B Years 4 – 6 Inter-House Swimming Carnival The Years 4 - 6 Inter-House Swimming will take place on Friday 26 February at Waterworx Aquatic Centre, Springfield. This carnival will begin at 8.30 am and conclude at 2.00 pm. An information letter has already been emailed to parents and students should have received a copy this week during house meetings. Please note that unless students use the train, Westside Bus services, the St Peters sport bus or attend OSHC, all students will need to be dropped at the pool as per the information you will have received. Students utilising these services will be taken to the carnival via bus and brought back to school at the end of the swim carnival. If you have any questions regarding this event, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Jeremy Lohe. AIC Cricket and Volleyball Many of our boys continue to be involved in AIC Cricket and Volleyball. Last weekend, St Peters played St Laurence’s College and while most teams did not get the win, the boys are continuing to improve each week. Our batting On Saturday, the Years 4 and 5 Springfield cricket team played another tough opposition and were defeated by St Laurence’s College. The opposition scored 2/172 off their 25 overs and Springfield batted well to reach 5/75 off their allocated overs. Matthew Maynard bowled a great line and length to finish with figures of 1-10 off three overs while Harry Barratt produced a super runout with a direct hit from side-on. Well done also to Matthew Maynard, Jamie Nelson, Liam Mitchell, Lachlan Hodgson, Kevin Manjooran and Rav Sidhu who all ended their innings without being dismissed from the opposition. Well done to all boys who played on Saturday. They are continually improving their skills each week. Gatorade Tri Series Congratulations to Jack Geeves who over the weekend secured first place in the 16 – 19yrs category of the Gatorade Tri Series. This is a fantastic achievement by Jack and builds on his selection in the Met West team at the end of 2015. Jack puts in many hours swimming, riding and running along with playing Cricket for St Peters and will be part of the St Peters AIC Swim team. Well done Jack! AIC Rugby and Football Well done to all boys who signed on for Term 2 Rugby, Football and Cross Country. Preseason training for Years 7 – 12 boys will begin this Wednesday afternoon and continue on Wednesday afternoons for the rest of the term. If you are interested in representing the College or if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Lohe. QGSSSA Autumn Sport Well done to all girls who continue to be involved in preseason training for Autumn Sports. Training for all teams in Touch, Basketball and Football continues to occur with the first round of fixtures taking place on Friday 18 March.
