Parkway UCC
October Ministry Index
By Rev. Craig Schaub
*More than 300 personal postcards written by Parkway people to voters in our community, encouraging
them to vote this up-coming election; that’s a big chunk of the more than 1,200 Working America sent
out around the Triad. More than 35 Parkway individuals participated in this action.
*Thousands of rainbow fish stickers, hundreds of blessings shared, dozens of rainbow bagels received at
Parkway’s table at Winston-Salem Pride on Saturday, October 15.
*37 degrees was the temperature reading that drove our youth inside Beth Bailey’s cabin on a chilly
night when they intended to camp out near Laurel Springs, VA.
*At least six times: times the relationship between Wentz Memorial and Parkway UCC was mentioned
at the Wentz Memorial UCC 95th Anniversary celebration on October 23.
*$2,300+ or 130% of our goal was raised through Parkway UCC efforts for this year’s CROP Walk, with
more than 30 of us walking.
*6 is the number of trained Parkway poll monitors to protect voter rights on Election Day.
*18 is the number of the number of affirmations “caught and released” at our first “Messy Church”
evening on October 9.
*You name the number of times this month you’ve stopped to own, name, reflect on your privilege in a
new way as we read, talk, listen, and write about White Privilege, and other privileges.

Faith and the Election
Look for the new banner on the bank at Silas Creek Parkway “Vote: It Matters”. We’re grateful for all the
ways so many in this season have encouraged people to register to vote, get trained as poll monitors, written
postcards, called voters, encouraged friends and family members to get out the vote.
On Election Day we will host our precinct in our building, anointing the space at the conclusion of worship on
November 6. We will also have snacks available in the narthex for voters, so…
Bring your left-over Halloween candy, cookies or other goodies to church on
Sunday, November 6 to share with voters on November 8. We will also have fruit available.
Our civic work of seeking hope, reconciliation, and acting in the ways of peace will continue even more so
after this election season. We will focus our worship this November in finding spiritual resources to be
agents of conviction while at the same time agents of respect and seeking common ground.

Sundays in November
We continue our series on
Practices to Sustain Hope in
Troubling Times this month.
Advent begins November 27.
Sunday, November 6
All Saint’s Sunday We light
candles in memory of loved ones
as we listen to reflective harp
music. The choir will sing, and we
will reflect on the blessings and
woes from Luke 6:20-31. At the
conclusion of worship we will
recess out of the sanctuary, down
the hall, and anoint the fellowship
hall space in anticipation of our
hosting our precinct voting in the
space on Tuesday. There will be a
meeting for parents of youth right
after worship in the fellowship
hall. Music that Matters hosts
the Burke Singers in our sanctuary
at 3 p.m.
Sunday, November 13
Stewardship Sunday We focus
on the question “What sustains
hope?” as we celebrate
commitments of leadership,
prayer, time, and financial
resources for the year ahead. We
will listen to the invitation to “be
glad and rejoice” in the midst of
troubling times from Isaiah 65:
17-25. Directly following
worship, we will train liturgists on
brief prayers and anointing which
will begin to take place at the
conclusion of worship most
Sundays. 9:45 a.m. on this day will
be our second in our White
Privilege: Let’s Talk! series.
We ask participants to read from
Part One Chapter 1 (John
Paddock) and Chapter 3 (Da Vita
McCallister) for the session and
continue to reflect on the
questions inviting you to write
your own Spiritual Autobiography
through the Lens of Race.
Sunday, November 20
Thanksgiving Sunday We
consider the question “What
brings us together” as we listen to
the vision of the Cosmic Christ in
Colossians 1: 11-20. Immediately
following worship we will have a
congregational meeting to
consider a proposal in regard to
our capital improvements.
Sunday, November 27
First Sunday of Advent Our
Advent theme “Dreaming God’s
Dream” begins on this Sunday.
We greet our crèche scene and
hear the story of one of the
characters in the scene, light the
first Advent candle, and reflect on
the Dream of Peace - Isaiah 2: 1-5.
Congregational Meeting
Sunday, November 20
after worship
The good news is that Parkway
UCC is a busy congregation
involved in many worthwhile
activities and mission projects.
With all the activities it has been
difficult to find a Sunday that will
allow for a congregational
meeting. Please plan to attend
the congregational meeting on
Sunday, November 20 to vote on
a proposal from Church Council in
response to the summer ice
cream gatherings. Look for a
summary of the gatherings and
the recommendation that Council
will bring to the congregation in
the near future. As always, thank
you for your continued support of
the vital mission and ministry of
Parkway UCC.
Nurture Committee will be
providing snacks & beverages
during the meeting.
Childcare will available.

Advent Prayer Partners
With Advent upon us Parkway would like to offer you the opportunity to
connect with another church member one on one in prayerful
conversation. As Advent Prayer Partners you will meet for 40 minutes
weekly, during the four weeks between November 27 and December 24,
to discuss the various topics provided within the Advent Guide
as well as any individual sharing or prayer you would like. Those
interested will fill out a brief survey detailing their hopes for the
experience and availability to meet, and then be matched with a prayer
partner for the Season of Advent. If you are interested in
participating in this opportunity please take time to seriously
consider your hopes for this partnership during Advent season and
complete the online survey.

There will be two devotionals available for the Advent season in the

Meet One of our New PUCC Members
Penny (Cody) Moquin: I am a 53 year old woman originally from Manchester CT. I lived there most of my life,
with a brief time in Florida. I came to North Carolina with a friend who went to work in Asheboro. I found
employment with Randolph Hospital and am still there. One of my duties is taking food to the patients. It is a joy
when I can get a patient or one of their visitors to smile or laugh. I also enjoy seeing the babies in the maternity
ward. Also I have an adorable beagle named Shiloh.
I have had problems finding an accepting place for me to worship for years. Then I met Rev. Liam Hooper and he
told me about Parkway UCC. I was welcomed from the second I walked in. One of the first smiling faces I saw
was Rev. Mamie Murphy. Parkway has given me a new family/community, who loves me and accepts me for
who I am. It’s a wonderful feeling to be treated like other members of the congregation. I am proud and
honored to now be an official member at PUCC and hope I can serve the church and the Lord for many years to
come.
