Introduction A World Scout Jamboree is a world Scouting event for young people aged between 14 and 18. The 24th World Scout Jamboree will take place in North America during July and August 2019. The event is being hosted by the Boy Scouts of America, Scouts Canada and Scouts of Mexico. This is the largest event delivered by Scouting worldwide and over 30,000 young people and adult volunteers are expected to attend from over 150 countries. The Scout Association UK is planning to send a contingent of approximately 3,000 people to the Jamboree, exact numbers are yet to be agreed with the Jamboree Organisers. Following the appointment of Caroline Pearce as Contingent Leader (UKCL), there is now an exciting opportunity to join the Contingent Management Team and appoint a Deputy Contingent Leader (Operations and Delivery). The Deputy Contingent Leader will work in partnership with the lead staff member, senior volunteers and UK HQ staff and others to deliver this life changing experience for young people and adults from all parts of the country. Jamboree Information The Jamboree aims to provide young people from across the world with an adventure that will inspire and prepare them for the future. More information is available on the event website: http://2019wsj.org// The 2019 World Scout Jamboree will take place at the Summit Bechtel Reserve is located in West Virginia, North America, and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The Jamboree program will encompass four core values: adventure, service, sustainability, and leadership. These are based around the central theme for the event which is “Unlock a New World”. The Summit Bechtel Reserve prides itself on being one of the most environmentally sustainable human habitats. The Sustainability Treehouse is a living education centre, not only providing information, but also immersing Scouts in the concept of sustainability. Sustainable practices will be evident everywhere you look, and sustainability will be a core part of the 2019 World Scout Jamboree program. The organisers are promising a new experience for participants, where they can experience “wild and wonderful” adventures such as white water rafting, rock climbing, and mountain biking. There is also an adventure valley which offers climbing, mountain biking, and zip lining. The park also has an area called The Rocks, this is one of the largest man-made climbing facilities in the world. They also have an area called The Ropes, which hosts balance beams, cargo nets, and other challenges. This Jamboree promises to be action packed! Role Information The Vision for the UK Contingent at WSJ24 is based on the pillars of Vision 2018: Scouting For All and aims to deliver both a Youth Shaped focus and a structured and measurable legacy to the UK Scout Association: The UK CMT will deliver a unique international adventure shaped by young people, where contingent members will develop personally and have a positive longer term impact on our Association. We are recruiting a Deputy Contingent Leader to reflect this vision, please see role description below. We are looking for someone who has experience of managing and leading people and projects and has the skills outlined in the role description. We welcome applications from the widest range of people and backgrounds. Summary of role Title: Deputy Contingent Leader for the Jamboree UK Contingent responsible for Operations and Delivery Duration: July 2016 – January 2020 Reporting to: UK Contingent Leader, Jamboree 2019 Practical points You will need to commit a significant amount of time to pre-event planning and meetings. These will amount to approximately 3 weekends in 2016, 8 weekends a year in 2017 and 2018 and 10 weekends in 2019, as well as significant periods at other times throughout the life of the project. You will need to commit to attending the Jamboree itself which will mean being out of the UK for approximately three weeks in late July and the first half of August 2019. You may (or may not) be required to visit USA and other countries in advance of the Jamboree, perhaps more than once. Members of the Contingent Management Team will pay a fee to attend the Jamboree, exact amount yet to be agreed. Where possible technology will utilised such as Skype, conference lines and emails to ensure the best use of everyone’s time. With a large number of International Service Team members in attendance also. The UK Scouting Contingent to the most recent Jamboree, in Japan in 2015 was 4,015 people in total. This was the total amount we were able to send. We aim to send a contingent of the same size to North America (once our allowance is known).
