The 2017 scholarship is open to high school juniors who live and volunteer
in Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott or western Washington county,
and who will begin a post-secondary program in fall of 2018.
What is the
Juliet Evans Nelson Scholarship?
Juliet Evans Nelson was a young person who worked
to make her community a better place by volunteering.
This $2,500 scholarship, dedicated to her memory,
was created by Juliet’s parents, family and friends in
1987. It is given annually to a young person who is
making a positive impact through volunteerism and
honors those who demand the best of themselves and
who, like Juliet, cherish life and live it with purpose.
Award and Presentation
A $2,500 educational scholarship will be awarded to
one outstanding youth volunteer. The recipient will
be notified in the late spring of 2017.
The scholarship check will be written jointly to
the youth and his or her institution of higher learning.
Application Process
Qualified students must provide all the information
indicated on the next page, including responses to
the questions.
Two letters of recommendation from individuals who
have knowledge of the student’s volunteer experience
must accompany each application. These letters may
be from teachers, clergy, counselors, youth workers,
social service professionals, or others familiar with
the student’s volunteerism. Newspaper articles or
other information about the student may be submitted,
but do not take the place of recommendation letters.
Applications, letters of recommendation and other
materials must not exceed 10 pages. Applications
must be typed or completed on a computer. No handwritten applications will be considered.
By accepting the scholarship, the recipient agrees to
coordinate a United Way Caring Connection volunteer Applications and letters of recommendation must be
project(s) with his or her school or community group submitted no later than Friday, March 31, 2017 by:

Eligibility
Applicants must:
• Be a high school junior during the 2016-2017
school year.
• Be entering post-secondary education in 2018.
• Live and volunteer in Anoka, Carver, Chisago,
Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott or western Washington county.
Evaluation Process
All applications will be checked for eligibility and
reviewed by United Way volunteers who will select
finalists to be recommended to the Nelson family,
who will choose the scholarship recipient.
