Derived from the vast and ever-changing sea of collective data that underpins our everyday existence, this work considers how emerging technologies –from Internet services to social media content – arise from and feed back into the real world, reflecting (while affecting) contexts and situations within our globalised, information-rich society. A Hayward Touring exhibition which presents an original portfolio of 40 photogravures from 1932, entitled ‘Wundergarten der Natur’, edited by the artist and published in the year of his death. The exhibition presents an opportunity to witness an exemplary set of Blossfedt’s signature close-up images of plants and flora. Both beautiful and thought provoking, the pieces in the exhibition creatively blend modern computer systems and networks with traditional forms of visual art. The result is a selection of digitally hybrid paintings, sculptures, videos and installations that give visitors an opportunity to experience new ways of seeing and interacting with the ephemeral realms of ‘living’ data which are now an increasingly fundamental part of contemporary life. Michael Takeo Magruder (b.1974, US/UK) is an internationally recognised visual artist who works with digital and new media including real-time data, immersive environments, mobile devices and virtual worlds. In the last 15 years, Michael’s art has been showcased in over 250 exhibitions in 30 countries. In 2010, Michael was selected to represent the UK at Manifesta 8: the European Biennial of Contemporary Art and several of his most well-known digital artworks were added to the Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art at Cornell University. Photo: Dataplex Economy City; Michael Takeo Magruder Blossfeldt (1865-1932) is regarded as one of the defining photographers of the twentieth century for his exceptional contribution to the art through his intricate botanical photographs. During his career, which spanned over three decades and included 6,000 photographs, Blossfeldt developed homemade cameras and lenses which enabled him to magnify his subjects by up to 30 times. In doing so he captured the microcosmic aesthetic of his specimens and revealed the underlying structures of nature, which until then remained unexplored. 33 Historic photographic processes by Black Glass Studios 25 April - 31 May Niki Carlin creates beautiful images using vintage photographic processes including wet plate collodion and cyanotype. To complement the Karl Blossfeldt exhibition Black Glass Studios based at Hazlehurst Studios in Runcorn will be creating a display of unique works detailing the techniques being revived in the 21st century.
