North Dakota Governor’s School Hitory
1999 - 2014
25 Years
North Dakota Governor's Schools was started in 1990. Funding for the first 2 years came from a federal
grant and was available only to class 'B' schools (smaller towns). At first, there were only 2 programs, Math
and Science. Since the beginning, there have been a maximum of 20 students per program. After the
first 2 years, the North Dakota State Legislature took over funding the program and has continued funding
the program to this day.
After the first 2 years it was decided that the program needed be further enriched and several additions
were made. Namely, the addition of the "Life and Learning" class, which also allowed all of the students in
all of the programs to interact more. Additionally, Tuesday and Thursday evening humanities classes were
added.
It the late 90s, a third program, Business, was started up. Initially it was funded by local businesses, but after
proving successful, the State Legislature started to fund this program as well. Shortly afterwards, two new
alternating programs, Visual Arts and Performing Arts were added. Initially Performing Arts was paired with the
local Trollwood program, but eventually NDSU fully took over the program.
At the end of the 2008 program, it was decided to take a portion of the Math program, namely the
Information Technology class, and expand it into its own program for the next summer. Plans were also
started that summer for another new program, English. Since 2009, both programs have been running. The
first two years of the English program ran for only 3 weeks, since it was a new concept for the NDGS.
After proving itself successful, full funding for the English program was provided and it now enjoys being a full
6 week program like the rest of NDGS. In 2013, the Engineering program was added to NDGS with a few
students. This summer, it is now a full fledged program and we also have the additions of the Architecture
and Agriculture programs.
The NDGS is unique in many ways. Although there are over 30 states with Governor's Schools, many of
the other states' programs only last a few weeks. Also, our programs are all located together and run
concurrently. Many states have their STEM programs at one location and their humanities programs at
another location. We are one of only 4 states that offer Information Technology as a program option.
However, due to our state's low population, we still have one of the smallest programs. Regardless of this,
our program is highly respected due to our 25 year history and large diversity of offered programs.
