President-elect Bush, like every president, has a Cabinet.
This Cabinet is not like the one you keep things in. The
president's Cabinet is a group of people who help him run the
government. They head up big departments. Most are called
secretaries. They report to the president and give him advice
and ideas.
A president nominates his own Cabinet members. His
choices must be approved by the Senate.
The number of Cabinet members changes as our country's needs
change.
The Secretary of Veterans Affairs is a brand-new Cabinet job,
created in 1989.
The new seal was not ready when this Mini Page went to press.
The Secretary of:
8. Labor looks

lining that protects my insides, gets thicker when
you have a cold. Sometimes there is so much of it
that you cannot even smell.

when dust or something else bothers

miles per hour. Most cars on the

The President's Cabinet
The word
"cabinet" comes
from an old
English word
meaning private
meeting room.
Each Cabinet
member has a
special chair to sit
in at the meetings.
The chair has the
name of his or her
department on it.
When they leave
office, members of
their staff often
buy that chair and
present it to the
outgoing member
as a souvenir.
Presidents call
Cabinet meetings
whenever they wish.
In times of crisis, a
Cabinet might meet
several times a week.
Presidents might
ask all members to
attend Cabinet
meetings.
The members are
very busy people.

problems.
Presidents often ask other advisers to attend Cabinet meetings. Vice
presidents often are included.
The Cabinet is not
set up by the
Constitution.
But every
president since
Washington has had
one.
There were only
four members in
Washington's Cabinet. He met with
them so often that
the custom began.
President Reagan named these other important staff members to his
Cabinet:
