Chapter 2-Trait approach
1. Each trait defines an important part of leadership and correlates to specific parts of a job a
leader may need to do or be a part of. The list is not completely comprehensive because it
cannot possibly encompass every trait needed for every situation, it simply names a few
of the most common and important ones. Intelligence or mental capacity is as important
as the confidence to perform a task or the determination to complete it and maintain
integrity and continue all these traits while being sociable. No trait in my mind is more
important than another however all the traits are very important.
2. Self-confidence is a very important trait as it is only devolved when you go somewhere
feeling less confident. It is demonstrated to others when you can deliver the steady
confidence needed in the times you may not feel as confident. I think of Michael Jordan
and Peyton Manning. Both of these people are very capable times others would allow
pressure to get to them, however instead they stay strong through it.
3. Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeable, Conscientious. I would say each has a
different impact however similarly weighted impact on certain traits. I would associate
Extroversion, and agreeable the most strongly due to their importance in leadership. I feel
I possess the openness and conscientious personality factors because I don’t want to hide
anything from others but at the same time I am focused on keeping order and
organization the best I can.
4. Emotional intelligence is the ability to read a situation and discern the emotions attached
to the moment, and then act on it. I believe a person is going to benefit hugely if they can
read a situation. Such as my mom’s ability to always tell what kind of day I’ve had just
by how I walk in the door. She can read that emotional state, and then react accordingly.
5.
2.1
1. I would pick Kelsey Metts due to her overall intelligence as well as her ability
to impress other supervisors these two factors lead me to believe she would be the best
for the job.
2. The trait approach allows me to break down the individual and see exactly what
traits they possess.
3. The trait approach only looks at the traits of a person instead of going deeper
into more of a personal and situational level.
To enhance my opportunities, I would look for an opportunity to show my traits
as many possible ways that I could. My knowledge would allow me to prepare and
demonstrate the different traits listed in this approach.
6. My greatest strength would be I am empathetic. I tend to always know what others are
feeling through little communication. My greatest weakness would be self-confidence
because in many cases I do not trust myself to finish a difficult or lofty task.
7. I would say my charisma has been inherited from situations I find myself in. or not
necessarily the situation but the people I’m in that situation with.
8. Emotional intelligence takes people down to a more personal level while social
intelligence I believe is a more superficial type. I believe you can have one without the
other.
9. Perception means a lot today due to the judgmental type of society we live in. it takes into
account little of the process of leadership and mostly the level of perception.
10. The basics of a meta-analysis is that there is a common truth behind all conceptually
similar studies. Trait research is a meta-analysis.
11. Non leadership to me is passive and uninvolved. I believe a good leader should not want
to lead due to the level of humility that would be involved.
12. I think humility and cooperation are the most needed traits for any problem in today’s
world, however I don’t know if there is a most relevant however I do know that leaders
need to have those traits in order to be successful.
