Summer 2016 Kids’ Classes at the Nebraska History Museum All classes are 9:00am-4:00pm at the newly renovated Nebraska History Museum --- SW corner of Centennial Mall & P Streets. Class fees are $40.00 for each class ($35 for NSHS members.) Kids must have completed the grades listed for each class. To encourage inter-generational learning, grandparents are encouraged to take classes with their grandchildren at no extra charge. Each person must bring a sack lunch to class. Refrigeration is available. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Class sizes are limited. 1. Wed, May 25 – Bison: The Native Americans’ Superstore – Grades K-8 Learn how important bison were to the first people to live in this place we now call Nebraska. Take part in the First Nebraskans educational experience, make a bison hide painting, make moccasins, and more. 2. Thurs, June 2 – Nebraska Unwrapped – Grades K-8 Tour the Nebraska Unwrapped: Selections from the Collections exhibit, and see highlights of the Nebraska State Historical Society’s collections. Learn interesting facts about our state, and make projects to take home. 3. Tues, June 14 – The Lewis & Clark Expedition, Puppet Show – Grades K-3 Learn about the Louisiana Purchase and the adventures of the people on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Create a puppet and be part of a performance at 3:45 for family and friends. 4. Thurs, June 16 – Music of the Pioneers, 1830s-1930s – Grades K-8 Participate in the Nebraska Music Cart activity. Hear from Chris Sayre about musical instruments, 1830s-1930s. Make instruments to take home, listen to music from many eras in Nebraska’s amazing past, dance, and sing. 5. Tues, June 28 – The Nifty 1950s – Grades K-8 Create a 1950s bungalow out of a shoe box. Play games from the 1950s. Listen to music of the day. Tour the American Dreams in the Cold War: Photos by Ralph and Barbara Fox exhibit. 6. Thurs, June 30 – Nebraskans in the Civil War – Grades 4-8 Find out about the important battles that the First Nebraska fought. March with the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. See Civil War memorabilia and walk through a Civil War tent camp. 7. Thurs, July 7 – It’s Not Your Grandma’s Quilt – Grades K-8 Examine historic and contemporary quilts. Tour the Nebraska’s Enduring Quilt Heritage: New Acquisitions exhibit. Learn about quilts. Create a small quilt to take home. 8. Thurs, July 21 – Nebraska Symbols – Grades K-8 Hear NSHS senior historian Jim Potter’s talk about the Nebraska seal and our state flag. Learn about the many symbols of Nebraska and how and why they were chosen. Create your own book of Nebraska symbols. 9. Wed, July 27 – Photography: Behind the Lens – Grades 4-8 Examine historic photographs. Learn about composition of photographs. Make a pin-hole camera. 10. Tues, August 2 – Learning to Play Chess – Grades 4-8 Enjoy learning chess moves. Make your own chess set to take home. Compete in a chess tournament. 11. Thurs, August 4 – A Day in the Life of a Pioneer Child – Grades K-8 Come to class dressed like a pioneer or wear clothing from our trunk. Learn about pioneers’ daily lives. Write with a quill pen. Play pioneer games. Participate in a quilting bee. Make a cornhusk doll. 12. Mon, August 8 – Planning Your Family Tree – Grades 4-8 Bring information about your family, as well as family photos. Visit the NSHS Library/Archives to find information about your family members. Get tips on how to continue this fascinating research.
