Corresponding Sides of Similar Figures and Scale Factors.notebook February 05, 2013 Corresponding Sides Definition of Corresponding Sides • If the relative position of two sides is same in two figures, then they are called Corresponding Sides. • Corresponding sides are proportional in similar figures. In the figure, triangles ABC and XYZ are similar. The relative position of AB and XY is same, so they are corresponding sides. Similarly, BC and YZ, and AC and XZ, are corresponding sides. Jan 238:50 AM Jan 238:51 AM We can create scale drawings using ratios and proportions. • We make them bigger or smaller by using the scale factor (ratio) and another fraction to set up a proportion that can be solved. Jan 238:52 AM Jan 238:55 AM When we do this we are creating SIMILAR FIGURES. • Similar figures are the same shape but not necessarily the same size. • 2 figures are similar if: • Corresponding angles have the same measure • The ratios of corresponding side lengths are equal Jan 239:04 AM Jan 238:53 AM 1 Corresponding Sides of Similar Figures and Scale Factors.notebook Jan 238:53 AM February 05, 2013 Jan 238:55 AM Jan 238:54 AM 2
