The research could even lead to ways of producing police mugshots from DNA traces at crime scenes according to experts. Scientists used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and portrait photographs to map facial features. Could help police: The discovery of five genes may lead to new ways of producing police mugshots from DNA traces at crime scenes These were then matched against DNA variants in almost 10,000 individuals. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2202880/Five-genes-change-producti... 14-09-2012 Five genes could change production of police mugshots | Mail Online Page 2 of 7 Five regions of the genetic code associated with different facial shapes were identified which suggests the involvement of five specific known genes. Used MRI: Researchers used MRI scans and portrait photographs to map facial features to find the five genes which may determine the face you have One, PAX3, has been linked to a minor disfigurement in which the nose is unusually broad. Another, PRDM16, is believed to play a role in cleft palate and other facial defects. Lead scientist Professor Manfred Kayser, from the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, said: ‘These are exciting first results that mark the beginning of the genetic understanding of human facial morphology. Facial shapes: The genes are associated with different facial shapes. The gene PAX3 is linked to a minor disfigurement in which the nose is unusually broad ‘Perhaps some time it will be possible to draw a phantom portrait of a person solely from his or her DNA left behind, which provides interesting applications such as in forensics. ‘We already can predict from DNA certain eye and hair colours with quite high accuracies.’ The research has been published in the online journal Public Library of Science Genetics. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2202880/Five-genes-change-producti... 14-09-2012 Five genes could change production of police mugshots | Mail Online Page 3 of 7 'Phantom portrait': Lead scientist Professor Manfred Kayser said it will be possible to draw a 'phantom portrait' which has interesting applications in forensics MOST READ NEWS • • • • • • Previous 1 2 3 4 Next • Duchess Kate puts on a brave smile in Kuala Lumpur after... • Justice Latin-American style: Mob take revenge on Guatemalan... • Evoking memories of Diana: Kate makes first visit to mosque... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2202880/Five-genes-change-producti... 14-09-2012 Five genes could change production of police mugshots | Mail Online • Tea and sympathy for Kate as she puts on a brave smile but... • 'People should stop staring and start learning': World's... • Woman, 32, arrested for murder of pretty business graduate... • Mother-of-four, 34, had sex with two schoolboys while her... • Knightsbridge mansion once owned by assassinated Lebanese... • Dog fitted with cruel 2lbs steel neck shackle that was... • The fairytale princess: Kate glitters in glamorous gold at... • Father-of-two sprayed in the face with powerful chemical and... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2202880/Five-genes-change-producti...
