TUESDAYS
Around the World 10:00 AM-Noon
8 Mar – Solo in Thailand & Laos – Ms. Chris Barger. Petting tigers, making mud bricks, farm life, monastery
life, an elephant for a day, and the chicken & rice bus.
15 Mar – WWII - New Zealand to Rabaul – Dr. George and Marie O’Neill sailed for 25 days to various WWII
sites in the southern Pacific. Through film and photographs, you will sail with them in this segment of their
voyage around the north island of New Zealand to Noumea, New Caledonia and on to Guadalcanal, Solomon
Islands and Rabaul, Papua New Guinea.
22 Mar – WWII – Yap to Osaka – Dr. George and Marie O’Neill. Continue your south Pacific journey from
Yap in the Caroline Islands to Guam, U.S., then on to Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Nagasaki and Osaka, Japan.
29 Mar – River Cruising in Southern France – Mr. David Valentine will present a photo program of his river
cruise on the Rhone and Saone Rivers. Included will be visits to Avignon (the city of popes in 1309-1377) and
the Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards and cellars. In Vienne, see and learn about the temple of Augustus and
Livia, the Roman amphitheater, and other Gallo-Roman ruins.
5 Apr – China in 1994 – Bob and Dot Dorr – The Dorrs will illustrate their talk about visits to Shanghai, Beijing
and Hong Kong, among other places. Bob is retired from IBM and Dot from the Sullivan County school system
as a librarian.
12 Apr – East Tenn. History Tour – Knoxville This road trip includes lectures and a guided tour of the East
Tennessee Museum of History in the morning and the Blount Mansion in the afternoon.
Transportation cost is $35 for KACL members and $45 for non-members; fee is not included in the
KACL registration fee. We depart from ETSU at Kingsport at 8:00 a.m. and expect to return by 5:30 p.m.
Lunch is on your own.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
1:30-3:30 PM
8 Mar – Confronting the Great Men of History – Dr. Brian D. McKnight, Assoc. Prof., UVA at Wise, a
frequent contributor to the Kingsport Times-News Editorial Page, and an author of three recent books on the
Civil War, says, “Throughout American history, certain individuals have become the "great men" of their day.
While the tendency has been to attribute superhuman qualities to these men, they were, like you and me,
possessing good judgment in difficult times.”
15 Mar – The Great Depression – Mr. George Salaita, Instructor, ETSU History Dept. and a KACL favorite,
will examine the times before, during and after the Great Depression, giving an in-depth examination of this
disaster of the 1920s with comparisons to the U.S.‟s most recent bout with depression/recession.
22 Mar – History of Tennessee’s Judiciary – Mr. Frank Johnstone of Wilson, Worley and Gamble law firm, is
a graduate of MIT and Duke Law School. He will discuss Tennessee‟s court system: capable judges,
constitutional changes and partisan politics.
29 Mar – The History of Coal in Appalachia – Dr. Ted Olson, ETSU Department of Appalachian Studies, will
explore the history of coal, its geology and mining in Appalachia.
5 Apr – Dr. George O’Neill will use a Great Courses DVD to facilitate a series of classes to learn how history‟s
great leaders changed the world. This class will start with the Hammurabi Code of Law (1750 BC), Moses and
Monotheism (1220 BC) and Buddha (526 BC).

9 Mar – (Topic to be announced)
16, 23 & 30 Mar. – “Dragons and Other Monsters in Art History" Ms. Aurora Pope,
Adjunct Instructor, Northeast State Community College, will explore the widespread use of monster, and
especially dragon, imagery throughout the history of art, emphasizing cross-cultural comparisons of these
images and the symbolic functions they perform within their cultural contexts. Topics include: an introduction
to the monster, monsters as heroes in myths and alchemy, and monsters as „threshold‟ creatures who inhabit
the afterlife.
6 Apr – The James Bond Phenomenon – What is it about the James Bond films that has kept them coming
for fifty years? Is it the „license to kill‟ or the sexy „Bond Girls?‟ Is it the exotic locations, the suggestive
innuendo, or Q‟s gadgets? Dr. Dave Petke, a long-time „Bondophile‟, will take a tongue-in-cheek look at the
factors which have helped James Bond survive the death and aging of actors, law suits, changes in technology
and world political systems to keep 22 films alive and a 23rd on the way. The presentation will be illustrated
with still photos and video clips to illustrate his conclusions.

10 Mar – Jaws and Nemo, i.e., Sharks – Dr. Diane R. Nelson, Retired Professor of Biology, ETSU, will
provide the answers to what sharks, sea turtles and coral reefs have in common; what the future holds for
these vital keystone creatures; and how they can be protected and why we should care.
17 Mar – Electrical Power: Then, Now, Tomorrow – An AEP spokesman will discuss what electricity is and
the history of how it is delivered to our homes as well as what the future holds for this critical industry.
24 Mar – Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” – One of Mozart‟s best, easily understood, „comic‟ operas, regardless of
language in which it is sung.
NOTE: 2 p.m., Johnson City, Carmike Cinema ($20). Please sign up with Ms. Pat Fink, ETSU at Kingsport
front office by Friday 17 March to carpool. Lunch is on your own.

7 Apr – Johnson City: Then, Now, Tomorrow – Mr. Alan Bridwell, Johnson City historian and marketing
director at the Johnson City/Washington County Economic Development Board, will bring to light the past,
present and future of our neighbor to the south. He has also promised to prove if there is any truth to the myth
that Johnson City was a Mafia vacation spot frequented by Al Capone.

14 Apr – Homeless in Kingsport? – Mr. Kermit Addington. Mr. Addington has become an advocate for the
homeless people of Kingsport in the past couple of years. You didn‟t know there were homeless people in
Kingsport? Oh, yes there are. Come hear what our city, our churches and other federal, state and private
agencies are (and are not) doing about the homeless situation.

Rules for the Road: 1. No coolers or alcoholic beverages will be allowed on the bus. 2. Plastic
bottles with secure tops or other secure drinking containers are allowed. Cans and glass bottles are
not allowed on the bus. 3. Snacks will be allowed on the bus. Please remember that the bus has to
be returned in the same condition in which it arrived or we forfeit our deposit.

KACL, in partnership with East Tennessee State University, was established in 1993 to provide
adults, regardless of educational background or age, with opportunities to attend stimulating
courses, lectures and special events. A volunteer board of directors manages KACL and board
members often serve as instructors. KACL greatly benefits from its ready access to ETSU faculty as
they share their expertise in community outreach – as well as from talented local instructors with
interesting topics.

Most classes are held on the campus of ETSU at Kingsport near Allandale Mansion. Please note
exceptions in the course descriptions. Classes are informal with little or no homework, and no
grades or tests. They offer you the opportunity to indulge your intellectual curiosity, engage in
discussion, and enjoy a congenial and cooperative setting among friends and neighbors.
You may register beginning February 14, 2011, by returning the enclosed Application for
Membership along with a check for $45 to KACL, ETSU at Kingsport. Additional members of the
same immediate family may register for $22 each. The enclosed fee covers as many classes as you
would like to attend. There is no other fee, except for the road trip. Those who wish to become
familiar with the KACL programs are welcome to attend any single class without charge.
REFUNDS: No refunds will be made after the first week of the term. Requests for refunds must be
made in writing and submitted to KACL. A $7.50 processing fee will be deducted from refunds.
PARKING AND ACCESS: Parking at ETSU at Kingsport is available in the designated student parking
area and handicapped spaces. To avoid citations, please do not park in the faculty/staff parking
spaces.
The classroom building may be entered through the two front and two side ground-level entrances.
Physically handicapped students may enter through these doors. An elevator to the second-floor
classrooms is available. Persons with disabilities who require special assistance or seating are
requested to call ETSU at Kingsport at 392-8000 for details.
ETSU is a tobacco-free campus. All use of tobacco is restricted to private vehicles.
