The Florida peninsula was more than twice as large as it is now because the sea level was much lower. The Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon arrived in Florida in 1513. The Spanish founded the city of St. Augustine in 1565. The Creek Indians and other tribes moved to Florida from Georgia and Alabama in the late 1700s and became known as the Seminole Indians. The government forced most of the Seminoles to move from Florida in the 1800s. Those that refused went deep into the Everglades. Ponce de Leon _______________________ 8 History Since Statehood In 1845, Florida was admitted into the Union. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Florida fought to keep slavery.
