Conference Recap
AD Spotlight
Special thank you to all of the athletic directors who attended the 25th Annual
TIAAA State Athletic Directors Conference in Murfreesboro.
Ricky Coffman of Adamsville
High School has served as both
the assistant principal and the
school’s athletic director. Ricky
has been a member of the TIAAA
Broad of Directors representing
athletic district 7 for the past two
years. In 2011, he was recognized
by the TSSAA as the Athletic
Director of the year in district 7.
Ricky is married to Amy Coffman
and they have two children, Rylan
and Ryce. Thank you Ricky for
serving our organization by doing
“unseen things” well.
Our keynote speakers, John and Brodie
Croyle encouraged us to lead with Vision,
Courage, and Commitment as Athletic
Directors in our schools. Brodie
challenged us to ‘enjoy the journey’ and
John gave us three points to ponder that
include:
1) What has God called you to do?
2) Are you doing it?
3) What are the fruits of 1 & 2?
Our Leadership Training Program had nearly 50 attendees studying topics that dealt
with athletic department policies and procedures, budgetary concepts, technology,
and concussion management. Our instructors (Roy Turner, Dr. Kemper, Scott Dorsett,
and Paul Pendleton) were outstanding, and we appreciate their service to our
organization.
We would also like to thank our exhibitors for participating, and we enjoyed the flow
between sessions and vendors during the
conference.
Our final day featured a Tech Talk about
apps, a focus on leadership excellence
(Tommy Marshall), an update from the
NIAAA (Dr. Mike Blackburn), TIAAA
Board elections, Mr. Childress and the
TSSAA Board/Legislative Council.
We look forward to seeing you at our next conference,
April 10-12, 2016 in Murfreesboro.
Thank you to Jerry Vaughn,
Regional Director of the
Varsity News Network
for providing all conference
attendees with a copy of the
book Leadership Excellence by
Pat Williams. Turn to page 296
for information about a leader
who has all seven sides:
Vision, Communication, People
Skills, Character,
Competence, Boldness and A

13 Ways to be
More Coachable
As administrators, we should strive to
continue to grow and be coachable.
Recently, an article by Positive
Performance was published to encourage
athletes to be coachable. This is a great
resource to share with your athletic
department , but also a tool we as
administrators can learn from.
1. Listen to what your coaches say, not
how they say it.
2. Trust me: It’s NOT about you.
3. Remember ‘coach’ is only one hat
they wear.
4. They really (REALLY) want you to
be your best
5. Your coaches are more stressed than
you can probably imagine.
6. Always say ‘thank you’.
7. Always look your coaches in the
eye.
8. Shocker: Your coach is human, too
9.Don’t roll your eyes.
10.If you really have something to say,
SAY IT.
11. Directly ask for feedback.
12.Be prepared.
13.Set up a weekly check-in with your
coach
