#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that kick-starts the season of giving. It’s a great opportunity to
boost your year-end fundraising efforts and engage on a personal level with your existing supporters and
spark awareness for your organization with new audiences. Learn how you can get involved and leverage the
momentum of #GivingTuesday with the tips below.
1.) Join the Conversation on Social Media
Social media played a significant role in the success of the inaugural #GivingTuesday with more
than 2.5 million impressions and continues to be a great way to share your organization’s story.
On and leading up to #GivingTuesday use Facebook®, Twitter®, and other social networks to
promote charitable giving and inspire your community of supporters. And when you use the
hashtag #GivingTuesday in your social posts, you’re exposing your organization to the entire
#GivingTuesday community.
2.) Make it Easy for Supporters to Find You Online
Your outbound communications, such as email messages and social media
posts, should tell your organization’s story and drive traffic to your website.
Once supporters reach your site, make it easy for them to learn how they can support your
cause by:
• Promoting #GivingTuesday on your home page
• Having a prominent donate now button making it easy for supporters to give
• Showcasing upcoming volunteer opportunities and events
Know what online and peer-to-peer fundraising solutions your supporters and prospects
are using, and make sure your organization is listed on platforms like everydayhero, where
fundraisers can raise funds on your behalf, share your story with their network, or donate
directly to your organization.

3.) Create a #GivingTuesday Email Campaign
A #GivingTuesday email campaign is no different from other campaigns built around a specific date,
like an end of year campaign. Send a series of email messages that will help your organization stay
top of mind as donors are determining how they will give. Check out the tips in the “Start Early”
section below for a suggested timeline of communications.
4.) Draw Inspiration from Others

5.) Start Early
Communicate with your supporters and social network about #GivingTuesday early by
planning your campaign carefully around other major dates during the holiday season, such as
Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.
When drafting a timeline, work backwards and take into account all the messages or themes
that could be woven into your campaign:
• Earlier in the Season, August–November: Like with any campaign or promotion, it’s
best to spread the word early and often. Consider mentioning #GivingTuesday in your
monthly newsletter editions leading up to December 2.
• The Week of Thanksgiving, November 24–28: Whether you send a Thanksgiving
greeting or a Black Friday appeal, make sure to mention that #GivingTuesday is the
following week. Your messages should give your supporters ideas for helping your
organization. Tie together giving thanks and giving back in your messages for a seamless
transition into promoting #GivingTuesday.
• Cyber Monday, December 1: This day is critical for #GivingTuesday communications
because people will be on the lookout for email messages promoting Cyber Monday sales.
Your messages should be a reminder about #GivingTuesday and excite people to support
the causes they care about.
• #GivingTuesday, December 2: This is the day to send an appeal stressing the values
of philanthropy and supporting your nonprofit. Emphasize the importance of giving back,
especially in the context of the mass consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Stress participation and the positivity around helping make the world a better place.
• December 3 and Beyond: As with any gift of time, treasure, or talent make sure to thank your
supporters. Let them know what impact their #GivingTuesday gift has on your organization, and
encourage them to stay connected with and continue supporting your organization.
