‘Baruk 2.0: For the People, For the River’
Description
The site is situated at the new phase of waterfront development beside the Sarawak River
in Kuching. Kuching’s development lies largely
on the southern bank of the river with various
commercial activities. The waterfront bustles
with life on mornings as it’s a meeting place for
the villagers. A noticeable feature of the landscape is the disparity in development between
inhabitants on the two banks. The project,
Baruk 2.0 seeks to address issues of connectivity and to revive some aspects of the Gambir
Market, a fresh ‘wet market’ that provided an
income and gathering point for the community.
Programmatically, Baruk 2.0 serves to educate the people, improve their quality of life and
increase their comfort. The scheme is divided
into a main station and five floating baruks.
The floating baruks will depart from the main
station and return after their routine services.
Traditionally, a Bidayuh baruk, upon which this
project is based, was a meeting place for the
community and the defence point of a longhouse. In this contemporary reinterpretation,
traditional materials like bamboo are employed.
