List 2015
Richard Simm, Manager, PwC
Introduction
Citywealth Future Leaders
List 2015 – First Edition
W
elcome to the inaugural edition of the
Future Leaders list, which will become
our annual feature of the young rising
stars in the private wealth industry. In this new
editorial project, we have set out to highlight
those in investment management, law, trusts and
private banking sectors in the UK and the IFC’s.
With role models like Richard Branson and Hillary
Clinton, they aspire to be influential business leaders
who are focused and ambitious, but who also
champion philanthropy, and work-life balance.
All the young professionals included in this guide
have been recommended by their directors, senior peers, or clients. Although they are
still in the early stages of their careers, these recommendations recognise the years of
studies and hard work that enabled them to reach this position.
I would like to offer my congratulations to those who have made our Future Leaders list
this year.

What are you studying for and what have
you learned?
I am studying for my STEP Diploma in
Trusts and Estates. I had forgotten how
hard it was to remember hundreds of
cases. I definitely learned how to balance
the competing interests of work, study and
social life.
What interesting case have you been
involved in?
Daniel Brandon
Solicitor, Kingsley Napley
United Kingdom
There are so many interesting cases I deal
with on a daily basis. The most interesting
are those matters that throw up technical
points of law and anti-avoidance legislation.
It may seem horribly complicated at first but
it is very satisfying to come to a conclusion
once you drill down into the problem and
separate out the issues.
What interesting case have you been
involved in?
Imogen
Buchan-Smith
Senior Associate,
Private Client and Tax,
Penningtons Manches
United Kingdom

The restructuring of a non-resident family
trust which holds operating or trading
companies in a variety of jurisdictions, due
to certain of the beneficiaries’ relocation to
the United Kingdom. This required an
analysis not only of UK tax considerations
but also local law requirements and the
jurisdictions where other beneficiaries are
resident to ensure that the solution we
proposed, and are now implementing,
works from the perspective of all
jurisdictions involved.
Your best film or book recently?
My ten-month-old twins mean that I don’t
have a lot of time to read books. However,
our Netflix subscription allows us to enjoy
films and the occasional box set binge.
Begin Again is a film I particularly enjoyed.
Uplifting, inspiring, Mark Ruffalo and Adam
Levine…what more can I say?
Your best film or book recently?
Jurassic World. I haven’t read a novel in
a while.
What charity do you support?
Compassion in World Farming, a charity
established by a couple of British farmers
who became concerned at the growing
disconnect between modern agriculture
and the well-being of animals and the
environment.
Testimonial
“Daniel is integral in building up Kingsley
Napley’s expanding private client
international tax offering. His technical
expertise and involvement with clients in
business development and with the firm
by far exceeds his years of qualification.”
What charity do you support?
I actively support Naomi House, a local
children’s hospice. I’m also involved with
Care for Casualties, a charity supporting
riflemen who have been wounded in
combat and their families, as well as the
families of those killed in action. My
husband is in the Rifles and has served in
both Iraq and Afghanistan so this is a cause
particularly close to our hearts.

experience in planning for non-resident,
non-domiciled individuals moving to
the UK.”

What interesting case have you been
involved in lately?
Advising a client about succession and tax
planning in thirteen different jurisdictions.
Your best film or book recently?

Imitation Game. It is a fascinating and
moving film as it talks about both historical
events and the relationships and human
frailties of the protagonist Alan Turing, the
UK mathematician who essentially invented
the computer. I was not aware, prior to
seeing the film, of any of the wider aspects
of Turing’s story, and the film left me feeling
saddened, as well as fascinated by his
extraordinary intelligence.
How did you get into triathlon training?
The triathlon training was borne out of a
long term goal to complete a triathlon
which, during 2014, I finally decided to do
something about rather than simply move
it from one year’s goal list to the next. I love
being out on my bike – for the challenge,
the scenery, and the chance to explore
different means of transport. The swim leg
comes fairly naturally, having been brought
up by the beach and being on or near
water for much of my childhood. The run
leg is the most challenging – I’m yet to
experience a runner’s high and find it a real
slog to get through.
Testimonial
What charity do you support?
I am a supporter of Asthma UK as a result
of being a life-long asthma sufferer which
now, in adulthood, is managed reasonably
well but which caused periods of
hospitalisation as a child. It really can be
a debilitating, as well as life-threatening,
illness, and the differences which I have
seen in treatment of the course of my
lifetime have been significant, which can
only be helped by further research.
What interesting case have you been
involved in?
I have been involved in a series of freezing
injunctions, which I enjoy due to their quick
nature and the debates about the
legitimacy of transactions, and the
interesting justifications advanced in relation
to more unusual transfers.
Your best film or book recently?

“It is clear to me that Tom Duggins is a
future leader, because what he already
brings to his work is an experience well
beyond his years in two crucial respects.
He is commercial savvy in the legal
analysis of his cases and has personal
gravitas and authority in dealing with his
clients, to which they in turn respond well
and with respect, as well as with
appreciation. All comes with a fun exterior
which makes Tom great fun to work with.
This is quite a combination.”

What charity do you support?
Lucy Edwards
Associate,
Penningtons Manches
One of the charities that I support is the Pembroke Town
Walls Trust. My family has strong ties to Wales and in
particular to Pembroke, a town encircled by the walls of a
medieval castle that was the birthplace of King Henry VII.
The site is of national and international importance and the
Trust was set up to protect and conserve its archaeology
and realise its potential to contribute to the social and
economic benefit of the local and wider community.

Who would you most like career advice from?
I am fortunate to have met many people whose
commitment to and enthusiasm for their work is a real
inspiration. Outside of the legal sphere, they include Sir
Patrick Moore, an astronomer and broadcaster, whom I
met when I was a child. I remember how passionately he
talked about his work. He built his career in a subject he
found fascinating and without compromising on his values,
and I would have liked the opportunity to meet him again
for advice on how I could do the same.
“Lucy has a natural rapport with clients of all stages and
backgrounds. When combined with her clarity on legal
matters and efficiency in dealing with ever-increasing
paperwork, this puts clients and their advisers at ease
and makes for a successful long term relationship.”
What are you studying for and what have you learned?
On qualifying into the private client department, I was
encouraged to study for the STEP Diploma in trusts and
estates, which I completed in November 2014. I received
a STEP Excellence Award for the highest mark in the
Administration of Trusts paper and completed the diploma
with an overall distinction. I am now studying for the STEP
Advanced Certificate in UK Tax for International Clients.

Who would you most like career advice
from?
Emma Heelis-Adams
Associate,
Burges Salmon
I’d like to get career advice with Hillary Clinton
as she is aiming to become one of the most
powerful people in the world and certainly the
most powerful woman. She has had a varied
career, originating in law, and of particular
interest is her work regarding women’s
empowerment and welfare. From a career
perspective, I would ask her if, when she
started out, she ever envisaged she would
be where she is now and her thought
process when making career choices.
What interesting case have you been
involved in?
What charity do you support?
I support Anthony Nolan, a charity which
matches individuals willing to donate their
blood stem cells or bone marrow to people
with blood cancer and blood disorders who
need lifesaving transplants. It runs a register to
match potential stem cell and bone marrow
donors to those with blood disorders who
require transplants. I support Anthony Nolan
because my sister was diagnosed with acute
myeloid leukaemia at the age of seventeen and
over the following few years required two stem
cell transplants. Both donors were found
through the Anthony Nolan register. My sister
has now been in remission for eight years.

A restructuring for a UK resident, non-UK

had to be considered. The restructuring
involved the closure of several foundations
and the resettlement of funds into trusts
plus a consolidation of various trust
structures, including trust to trust transfers
and amendments to the terms of the
remaining trusts.
Who would you most like career advice from?
Sir Kenneth Robinson, because of his
inspirational views and understanding of
nurturing talent in everyone. I would ask him
to help me and my team learn how to find
self-fulfillment through the convergence of
our natural talents and personal passions.

who performs well above her level of
qualification. Her technical skills are of the
highest calibre, with particular strength in
international matters, including cross-border
estate planning. She delivers extremely
technical advice in a practical and
commercial context, and her calm, efficient
and friendly manner is appreciated by clients
and colleagues alike.”
There is a stigma attached to mental health
problems, and I support the work Mind does
to raise the profile of those who suffer from
mental health issues. I hope to be running
the 2016 London Marathon for them.

“William heads a team of five fee earners.
He leads in business development,
successfully raising the profile of his team,
building on existing relationships with
referrers and forming new professional
contacts outside the firm. In addition to
his own workload for high net worth
clients, William supervises and assists the
fee earners in his team. He is well
respected by colleagues and clients for his
technical expertise and his commercial
and common sense approach is highly
valued. William has a natural rapport with
clients which, when combined with his
clarity on legal matters and efficiency,
leads to effective outcomes for clients and
builds successful long-term relationships
with contacts and clients alike.”

Who would you most like career advice from?
I am looking forward to seeing what becomes of Hillary
Clinton’s presidential campaign. Looking back at her
career since her time as First Lady, through to US Senator,
then as Secretary of State, and now a possible future
President, she strikes me as someone who has shown
dignity in personal hardship, grace in defeat and a
consistent pursuit of excellence in her work.
“Kate is a first class young lawyer who possesses
exceptional negotiating skills and remains unfazed, even
when faced with complex issues. She has worked on a
number of high-profile cases, and her excellent technical
knowledge, combined with an ability to reassure and
support her clients, makes her a definite “one to watch”
in the world of family law.”
What are you studying for and what have you learned?
I am studying Arabic as a way of broadening both my
cultural understanding and my professional expertise.
What interesting case have you been involved in?
Since my involvement in the reported case of Abduction:
F v Y, which involved an alleged wrongful removal of a child
to Russia, I have worked on a number of cases involving
a possible international relocation by one party with the
child or children of the family. I have also been working on
a number of high net worth cases involving offshore trust
structures, including advising the trustees of an offshore
trust where a trust beneficiary has become involved in
contested matrimonial proceedings.
Your best film or book recently?
I thoroughly enjoyed H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. It

I picked up the Malcolm X autobiography
as I am in a book club. It was fascinating to
gain some insight into the mind of such a
revolutionary individual. He was intelligent

his conviction in what he believed at any
given time and how that drove his cause
and which ultimately led to his death.

Bobby Kennedy. Bobby was the man behind many of his
more famous brother’s presidential policies and the reason
I have picked him is because Bobby was a ‘juggler,’ a skill
that in our modern day lives we all have to practice to
varying degrees of success.
Bobby was responsible for what seemed like JFK’s cool

What are you studying for and what have you learned?
I completed my ICSA professional in 2010 following a
career change to offshore trust and company

secondary school children in mid-2008.
Although qualifications and exams are important they are
only ever of real value when combined with day to day

range of skills and I feel privileged to have learnt from some
of the best people in the industry who, despite their
seniority, have always had an open door policy and no
question was ever too small or insignificant.
What interesting client work have you been involved in?

Administration (IDFA) in 2014 and I am also studying with

What interesting work have you been involved with?
In our Guernsey office Real Estate team I administer a
group of Guernsey structures that hold a UK property
portfolio valued at circa £790 million for a range of clients
that includes European investment funds, sovereign wealth
and high net worth individuals. Some of my current
projects include the sale of a shopping centre for £180
million and the purchase of a commercial tower block for
conversion into residential dwellings, valued at £69 million.
Which charity do you support?
When I was living in my home country, Wales, I took part
in several fundraising charity events for the Velindre Cancer
centre, which is Wales’ specialist cancer treatment centre
located in Cardiff and provides services to over 1.5 million
people across South East Wales. Two of the events
included running my first marathon and a tough and
gruelling weekend camp at a Territorial Army event in the
Brecon Beacons.

My favourite book is Principle-Centered
Leadership by Stephen Covey. My key
takeaway from this book is the importance
of one of the principles, empathetic
listening, which encourages readers to
‘seek first to understand, and then to be
understood.’
“Great leadership is about recognising the
strength in balancing EQ and IQ; having
vision and the courage to pursue that
vision whilst dealing with adversity along
the way, as well as always being driven by
finding solutions rather than allowing
problems to derail you. Lauren has all of
these qualities, as she demonstrates

Steve Jobs. I admire the way he built a company from scratch
to become the most valuable company in the world and one
of the most recognised brands globally. I find it interesting
how his personality was in the very fibre of the company and,
in many ways, has seen him live on after he passed away. I
would ask him what the single biggest challenge he faced
along his journey was and what he did to overcome it. I would
also ask him what would be the one thing he would change
about his career if he was able to re-live it and what he would
do differently in his personal life if allowed to go back in time.
What are you studying for and what have you learned?
I’m studying for the Charter Wealth Manager qualification,

and Management certificate, and the Investment
Management Certificate.
“Freddie continues to prove himself as highly competent,
ambitious and efficient. His customers value him for the
technical quality of his work and his incredibly helpful
attitude. His attention to detail has proved a crucial final

member of his team. Freddie is undoubtedly the rising
star of the bank, illustrated by his quick progression.”
“I would have no concerns about Freddie assisting any
of my clients. He is very approachable, well turned out
and always seems keen to provide a good service. He
recently passed a difficult tax exam aimed at those with
international clients, which very much impressed me as
Freddie’s background is the financial/investment
spheres, rather than accountancy or law.”
“I have known Freddie for at least three years now and
he has from day one come across as an extremely
competent banker with an engaging manner able to
easily network with more seasoned professionals.
I suspect he will achieve great things as his interpersonal
skills will lead him to grow very strong bonds with
his clients.”
What interesting client work have you been involved in?
A long-term UK resident with a German domicile who
recently sold a classic car for a sum in excess of $10m.
We had to structure his portfolio in a way to keep the
capital clean, so it could be remitted to the UK with no
further tax liability, whilst also generating an investment
return so that this pot of assets can fund his UK
expenditure for the next twenty years. The case was
interesting on a personal level, as the individual client was
quite a character, but also from a technical point of view
as there were a number of investment and taxation issues
which required careful thought.

I have been involved in winning a pitch to manage cash

particularly interesting as the organisation is deemed notfor-profit, albeit it is not a charity but run on behalf of its

it's Rich's skill at building and developing a team around

I've studied for and passed my ACA and CTA, but my

I'm expecting my first new-born and I'm swiftly learning
it's another level beyond professional qualifications,
although the late-night studying for the CTA and

The most interesting work often involves intergenerational

are often letting go of their life's work, for the children who
are embarking on a new and exciting chapter and for other
connected parties like business employees, advisors or
charities, who may have to re-adjust to a new way of doing
things. At the end of the day, as a Private Client advisor,
