TODAY’S READINGS
Acts 10: 34-43
Colossians 3: 1-4
John 20:1-10
SENTENCE: Set your minds on things that are above, and not on things that are on the
earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Alleluia. Colossians 3: 2,3
COLLECT: Alleluia, faithful God: on this day you raised Jesus from death, and
calmed our greatest fear. Help us to celebrate with joy; that, in greeting the risen
Saviour, we may be filled with the hope of resurrected life. All this we ask through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy
Spirit, one God now and forever. Amen.
WELCOME TO WHANGAREI ANGLICAN
As we approach these most holy of days in our Christian year, we follow Jesus as he
walks to the cross. We hear again the cries of Good Friday: My God, My God why have
you forsaken me? And: Father into your hands I commend my Spirit…
We wait through the silence of Holy Saturday – in the sure and certain hope of Christ’s
resurrection on Easter Day. We follow, this year, knowing that yet more Christians have
been murdered and maimed for their faith. We pray that Anglicans across this Church
would add their prayers to those being offered for our brothers and sisters in the Coptic
Churches in Egypt. We pray especially for those killed or injured in the Palm Sunday
bombings and for their loved ones. We pray too, for those so consumed by hatred that
they resort to such barbaric acts and claim to do so in the name of the God of Abraham.
Muslims and Christians have lived in mutual respect in the villages and communities of
the Nile Valley for generations: May the depth of their relationships give them resilience
in the face of the twisted ambition of extremists.
We pray too, for those members of our own communities in Aotearoa, New Zealand and
Polynesia who, because of their faith, become targets of bigotry and prejudice at times
such as this. As disciples of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, we recommit ourselves to work
for understanding, dialogue and mutual respect between peoples of different faiths in our
own communities. Let us also recommit ourselves to working for a fair, just and generous
society in which the gifts and contributions of all people can flourish, and the tares of
alienation and extremism find no soil in which to take root.
This Easter may the peace that passes all understanding keep our hearts and minds in
the knowledge and love of God and of God's son Jesus Christ our Lord, and may the
blessing of God, the holy and blessed Trinity rest on all people.

FOR THE DIARY
COMMUNITY SERVICE: On Sunday, April 23rd at 2pm, we will be gathering at Christ
Church for the first of our monthly opportunities to provide service in the wider
community. This time we will be helping out with a garden in Selwyn Park. To
express interest or for more information, contact the Reverend Peter Bargh, details
on back.
CLERGY LEAVE: Over the Easter school holidays, the Reverend Alan Burnett will
be on leave during the weekdays, returning for worship on Sunday 16 April and 30
April. The Reverend Peter Bargh will be on leave after this, from May 1 until May 9.
WHANGAREI ANGLICAN NEWS
FRIDAY MORNING BCP SERVICE: The Litany and Book of Common Prayer Holy
Communion service return at their regular time of 10:15am on Friday, 20 April. This
follows their absence last week due to the observance of Good Friday with special
services.
EVENSONG: Join us on Low Sunday – 23 April at 6pm for a traditional service of
Evensong at Christ Church, Whangarei. From May onwards it is likely, though not
confirmed, that Evensong will make its way around the other Anglican churches in
the district; so, do come along to enjoy what could be the last Evensong at Christ
Church for several months!
THANK YOU: Alan and Peter express their thanks to all who contributed to making
this Holy Week and Easter meaningful to others, within Whangarei Anglican and
beyond. The myriad ways in which people gave of their time and energy during this
busy time is beyond listing and has been an inspiration. May the coming Easter
season be one of blessing and joy for you all.
PARISH OFFICE OVER THE EASTER SEASON: The Parish Office will be closed
on Monday 17 April and Tuesday 18 April. Over the Easter season, the office will be
closed to the public on every Monday and Thursday. With this, however, comes the
opportunity for Wednesdays, following Midday Eucharist, to become a time of
fellowship over afternoon tea/lunch at Christ Church for any parishioners to gather
and to ask questions of the Church’s life or to make suggestions. More information
on these opportunities and changes will come following Easter.
WHANGAREI ANGLICAN VESTRY: On Sunday, 2 April the Vestry of the
community was announced. Those on the committee are the Reverends Alan
Burnett and Peter Bargh, Kim Parker (Synod Rep), Paul Ruddell (Synod Rep),
Catherine Anderson (People’s Warden), Marshall Walton (Priests’ Warden), Bruce
McGregor (also Treasurer), Cherry Daly and the Reverend Margaret Rapson.
Please continue to hold these people in your prayers over the Easter season as they
begin to work to establish a community of strength and vigour over their tenure on
Vestry.
PUBLIC LECTURE: On the evening of Friday, 5 May Whangarei Anglican will host
a public lecture at Christ Church – Understanding the Concept of God: Some
Alternatives to the Personal omniGod. The lecture will be offered by Professor
John Bishop from the University of Auckland. More information will follow in the
coming weeks.
FROM THE CLERGY
You may notice that the front piece in this newsletter is the Archbishops’ Easter
Meditation. This meditation reminds us of the sure and certain hope of Christ’s
resurrection even in the midst of wider issues facing the Church universal and it is a
message that we feel is worthwhile sharing within Whangarei Anglican.
Easter, when we celebrate the fullness of the hope in Christ, also seems an apt time
to introduce a pattern which you will see over the coming months. This is that we will
use the front of the newsletter to convey messages from the Wardens, Treasurer and
Vestry as well as the regular reflections and messages from the Clergy. Our hope is
that this leads us all to having a fuller appreciation for the life of Whangarei Anglican.
FOR OUR PRAYERS
In the Worldwide Church, we pray for Christians around the world who prepare for
the Easter season. As your Spirit has touched that continent, so touch our islands. In
our Anglican Communion, we pray for the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most
Reverend Justin Welby. We pray for The Rt. Revd Sitembele Mzamane of Mthatha
(formerly St. John’s) Southern Africa and for The Rt. Revd Cranmar Mugish in
Uganda. May they be encouraged in remembering the risen Christ.
In our Anglican Church, we pray for our Archbishops Philip and Winston. In our
Auckland Diocese, we pray for our Bishops Ross and Jim, as well as for Bishop Kito
in Te Hui Amorangi ki Te Tai Tokerau. We pray for the Parish of Papatoetoe; the
Parish of Otahuhu Holy Trinity; the Diocese of Polynesia’s Tongan congregation in
Auckland; Parish of Mangere East; and, the Diocese of Polynesia’s Samoan
congregation in Auckland.
Prayers for the World: We continue to pray for the people of Syria who try to recover
a sense of normality following the sarin gas attacks. We also pray for all those places
where terror and violence are normality. O God, let us not be conceited, believing only
those like us have lives of true value, but that any life ended in terror is against your
will.
In our Community, we pray for our neighbours and those in the community who help
one another. Loving God, open our lives to the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we
may fully reflect the glory of your love and share our lives with one another.
We Keep in Our Prayers Ngaire, Betty, Kirsty, Anne, Deborah, Carla, Sue, Barbara,
Helen, Stella, Ruth, David, Yolanda, Robin, Margaret, Daniel, Ethan, Jeda, John,
Nancy, Colin, Marjory, Pauline, Win and John.
We Pray for Those Who Have Died: We remember also those whose anniversaries
occur at this time. May they and all the departed faithful rest in peace and may light
perpetual shine upon them.
Community Prayer Chain: If you know of any person in need of prayer through
sickness or any other reason, please call Rosemary Blackwell so that their name can
be included in our prayers. Her number is (09) 435 3664.
Pastoral Care Coordinator: If you know of any members of our community who are
unwell, unable to make it to church or have been admitted to hospital, please contact
Julianna Marshall, (09) 437 2988 and she will arrange a visit/home communion.
