S.G. Third Grade January 2017 Photo Newsletter January was a stellar month in third grade. The third graders read from the Bible weekly. In this activity, the students are using the “Close” reading procedure to increase comprehension. As they read, each student will mark items with a “K” if he/she feels that she knows about it. He/she will mark a “Q” if he/she has questions about an item, “E” if an item is interesting or exciting, and “L” if they feel like they learned from the item. The third graders took some time to do some side-by-side reading of “Nights of the Pufflings.” Good side-by-side reading is being demonstrated by these two young ladies. Ask your third grader what happens during the nights of the pufflings in Iceland. The third graders learned during Vivian’s birthday cake sharing that birthday cakes can be made entirely out of cupcakes. Adam shares his Getting-to-Know-You. Adam takes advantage of the map. It is time for a reading assessment. The third graders pass out completed papers and check them over. Kaylee uses a Wisconsin map during her Getting-to-Know-You. Kaylee thinks quick on her feet while answering fellow student’s questions. All the SMC third graders are heading to the Barlow Planetarium. Medium sized star gazers get prepared for the show. The third graders enjoyed a custom-made star show courtesy of Ty at the Planetarium. It is time for science model making. The third graders take out their social studies book to use it as a resource to draw their continents on their Earths. After each sun is strategically placed on the black paper and covered in facts, precise calculations need to be made in proper placement of the Earth’s axis. Oscar does additional research before starting his model. The medium sized crafters get moving. A sun shiny smile is given for a nearly completed project. We are almost done. Getting close. Looking good, but wait, where is the glitter? Oops! It is time for cleanup. The third graders are a well-oiled cleaning and organizing machine. Please stop in the entrance way and see the final product, including glitter. The third-grade class exhibits respectful form while they listen to Getting-to-Know-You presentations. Wyatt B. points out items during his Getting-to-Know-You presentation. The third graders show enough maturity to enter their own lunch selection on the Smart Board. Dani presents another great Getting-to-Know-You presentation. There is a lot of cuteness is this photo. The third graders joined the rest of the SMC elementary students at the Jane Bergstrom Fine Arts Center to celebrate Catholic Schools Week with the middle school and high school band and choir. Waiting patiently for the show to begin. Ta Da. The third graders report that some brothers and sisters are on the stage. Riley gives Dani some important directions on how to hand out birthday treats. While Mrs. Slavinsky treats the third graders to a slip around and read story, Mr. Hickey tells some of their brothers and sisters a story in Pre-K. The third graders take time out of their busy schedule to do some independent reading or work on their essays. In social studies the third graders have been enjoying molding land forms out of clay and labeling them. On this day, Mrs. Vancil treated the third graders to a special Jesus prayer activity. Mrs. Schneider taught the third graders a fun battle ship like game that they can play to help them learn some of the features of excel. Camden breaks a smile after his battleship victory. It is just the first day of Catholic Schools Week and the first service project pencil donation suitcase is almost filled. Go Zephyrs! Third graders have been working on place value in math class. Students created place value drawings for 2– and 3-digit numbers. They built 4-digit numbers with their secret code cards and expanded them to sums of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. They identified numbers expressed in scrambled order and solved place value word problems. They rounded numbers to the nearest hundred and ten as well as worked on adding and subtracting multidigit numbers. Keep practicing those facts.
