Drawing Graphs for Data
a) Draw a double bar graph to represent the information in the table.
b) Use your bar graph to answer these questions:
i) When is it cheaper to use cell phone company A?
ii) When does it cost the same amount to call from cell phone company A as it does to call from cell phone company B?
iii) If you were an advertising company, which part of the graph for
Company A would you show in your adverts?
2. A salesman sells 300 lamps altogether. He sells 100 small lamps, 150 medium sized lamps and 50 large lamps. Draw a pie chart to represent this information.
3. 50 Grade 7 pupils were asked about how much time they spent watching TV a day. The table below gives a summary of the information found.

a) Draw a double bar graph to represent the information in the table.
b) Use your bar graph to answer these questions:

When you phone for more than 5 minutes

ii) When does it cost the same amount to call from cell phone company A as it does to call from cell phone company B?
At 5 minutes
iii) If you were an advertising company, which part of the graph for
Company A would you show in your adverts?
The part where the cost is shown for 5 minutes or more

answer?
This is an opinion question – but students must give a logical and reasonable
answer.
E.g. for Histogram – the histogram represents the data better as it is easier to see how
many students spend their time watching TV and how much they are watching.
E.g. for Pie Chart – the pie chart represents the information best as you can see how
much TV the students are watching and compare it to the number of students watching
other amounts of TV.
d) If you wanted to show that lots of children watch TV, would you make the
vertical scale on the histogram bigger or smaller? Give a reason for your
answer.
I would make the scale smaller so that the bars of the histogram look taller so that it
would look like more children are watching TV.

ii) What do you notice?
Children spend more time watching TV than they spend studying and doing
homework.
iii) If you were the principal what would you use this double bar graph to prove to parents?
That children spend more time watching TV than studying.
iv) Do you think the information shown in the table might change closer to exams? Why do you say so?
Yes – because children are more likely to start studying more closer to the exams (this is a personal opinion question but this is the most logical and reasonable answer).

a) Which graph do you think would represent this information best? A bar graph, histogram, or pie chart? Give a reason for your answer.
A histogram because the months represent time which means that the
columns/ bars need to be next to each other, unlike in a bar graph
(continuous vs discrete data). There are too many items to make a pie chart
effective.
b) Draw a histogram to represent the information.

c) From the bar graph when do you think the schools were writing exams and why do you say so?
In June and October and November because this is when the DVD rentals are low probably because students are studying and not watching movies.
d) From the bar graph when do you think the schools were on holiday and why do you say so?
Schools were on holiday in January, July and December because lots of DVDs were rented. Students like to watch movies during their holidays.
e) When did the DVD store rent the most DVDs?
July
