Newsletter, Term 1, Week 5
Message from the Principal!
In my years as a teacher I think last week was possibly one
of the strangest I’ve encountered. With some very wet
weather on Thursday prior to the anticipated cyclone, Friday then turned out to be not such a bad day weather-wise,
at least until the end of the school day. With the bad forecasts the majority of parents decided to keep children at
home and we had just six in school! How good it was that
we missed out on the worst of the weather and that the
cyclone did not impact anywhere near as badly as it could
have in our area.
Hopefully, the weather will now be a little bit more settled
and predictable and we will be able to get through the remainder of the term with a little more normality. We have
quite a lot of testing occurring at the moment as we near
the end of our first round of teaching units and prepare for
3-Way reporting which starts the week after next.
You will probably have gathered that we are currently
without Mr Martin for sport on Tuesdays and for my administration day on Fridays. Unfortunately, he had an accident on his bike a fortnight ago and broke his leg badly.
We wish him a speedy recovery. Whilst he is away, Tuesday sport will be covered by either Mr Lee or Mr Bright
and Ms Thomas will work with the Prep to Year 2 class on
Fridays. Ms Thomas will also be working this Thursday as
I am away for a couple of days at a Principal’s conference
and next Tuesday and Wednesday for Mr Byrnes as he
attends Maths training. Ms Thomas has worked a lot with
our students over the last few weeks and months and I am
confident that the students are in good hands whilst they
are in her care.
Regards,

P&C News
May I remind you that our P&C Annual General Meeting
is planned for Thursday, 5th March at 3.15pm (next
week). All community members are invited to attend the
meeting and to join this organisation which supports the
work of our school. The positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer are open for election. Please
see me or current P&C Secretary Geraldine Gregory if
you’re interested in assuming one of these positions.
Student Leadership Team Lunch Time Sessions
Disruptions last week caused the cancellation of our first
K-Nex clubs, but hopefully these will start this week. We
did, hold our first craft club last Thursday and a number of
students attended to make goat masks to celebrate the Chinese New Year which heralded the year of the goat. Thank
you to School Captains Amber and Tegan who attended to
assist the students.
Two students, Amber and Paige (pictured over) managed to
his the Massive Maximiser mark (40 bands). Well done you
two!
Focus On Learning
Our Prep students are pictured below sharing their leaning
about ‘position’ in Maths lessons.
3-Way Reporting
Don’t forget that 3-Way reporting interviews will take place
in Week 7, commencing Monday, March 9th.
All parents are urged to attend. The 3-Way reporting process
is extremely valuable in that it enables student, parent and
teacher to celebrate in student successes as well as setting
targets for the coming weeks.
Letters for booking appointments will be sent home early
next week.

Sight Words
A number of students bought home sight word cards this
week. These cards each have approximately 10 words for
the students to learn as part of homework activities. Students will be tested on the words each day and once they
have recognised all the words on at least three separate occasions they will move to the next card. I would suggest
that students concentrate on just two or three of the words
at a time at home until they become confident with them.
There are 5 progressively more difficult sets of words, each
set containing 40 to 50 words (Green, Pink, Orange, Yellow and Blue). As they attain all the words in a colour level, students will receive a special certificate.

School Leadership
Last Tuesday I was fortunate to escort three of our Year 6
school leadership team to a conference at Brothers Sports
Club in Bundaberg. Thank you Tegan, Amber and Kenny for
your super behaviour and participation. I am sure that the
lessons you learned about leadership and generosity on this
day will remain with you and that you will employ them in
your leadership roles every day at school.
Prac Student For Mr Byrnes
In two weeks time Mr Byrnes and students in the Year 3 to 6
class will benefit from the services of a Prac student for three
weeks. Ms Michelle Woods is a third year student with the
University of New England. I know that you will join me in
welcoming her to Maroondan and I am sure that she benefit
also from her experience here.
