From your Servant Leader:
January 26, 2017
Before reading this column, you should check out the
announcement below about the election results for our next national
president!
For the first time that anyone can remember, the National Council has
elected its next national president months before he will take office. The
president-elect was elected this Monday but won't take office until
October 1, 2017 (a month after National Assembly). This was an
intentional change to allow the president-elect to have time to consider
options about roles and skills on the next board of directors. He can have more time to learn the current
status of the many varied objectives and actions presently underway. He can also have more time to get
to know you.
Any national Society leader will be many miles and experiences away from most of his/her constituency.
Fortunately for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, we have regions and corresponding regional vice
presidents who are "closer to the customer" to know how things are working - or not - in our many
Councils and Conferences. The national staff is another resource where members share their activities
and thoughts. We have regional meetings where national leaders might attend and meet people firsthand.
And more recently, the national Council can take increasing advantage of better communications and
databases to survey its members and to hear from them across many issues and concerns. If you have
something to share, we have many ways you can use to get your message across.

Q: I prefer to take minutes differently than shown on the form offered in the minutes' book. We
follow "Robert's Rules." Is it essential that I use your form?
A: It is not necessary to use the form provided in the Secretary's Minutes Book as long as appropriate
minutes are taken. Minutes can be taken in any format.
Q: Is there a National SVdP rule that members of a new Conference who have completed the
Ozanam Orientation must be accompanied by a member of another established Conference on
every home visit made for six months?
A: This is not a national requirement; however, what you describe is a local definition.
Councils/Conferences throughout the country probably have their own restrictions on home visit
training.

Vincentian Formation
Jubilee Year
400th Anniversary of the Vincentian Charism
A Letter from Fr. Tomaz Mavric, CM - Superior General
Dear members of the Vincentian Family,
May the grace and peace of Jesus be always with us!
My heart is overwhelmed with thankfulness and joy for this "gift from Heaven,"
allowing the entire Vincentian Family to celebrate, throughout the whole of 2017, the
400th Anniversary of the Vincentian Charism, which has left such deep marks of Jesus's
unconditional love on the world throughout the last 400 years and continues to do so
today!
During this year, the Vincentian Family will choose different dates for beginning the
celebrations. Some already have started. Some will begin later. But there is one date that
is the source, the beginning of the reason for the celebration, the beginning of the "way
of Saint Vincent de Paul," the beginning of the Vincentian Charism: 25 January 1617 in
the village of Folleville in France.

Showing Awareness for the Cry of the Poor
January Voice of the Poor Reflections
By: Tom Dwyer, Chair, National Voice of the Poor Committee
Poverty Awareness Month, an annual event sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops,
concludes this week. To mark it and be sure it is more than just four weeks of focused attention, Voice of
the Poor committee member and president of the Archdiocesan Council of Miami, Frank Voehl, offers a
powerful motivational plea for taking action! Frank calls on Vincentians to be "Poverty Awareness
Improvement Warriors." Indeed, we can't change actions until we change hearts, and we can't charge
hearts until our hearts, minds and souls are truly aware of the Cry of the Poor.

Showing Awareness for the Cry of the Poor:
A Motivational Plea for taking Action
By: Frank Voehl, Archdiocesan Council of Miami president and Southeast Region
Voice of the Poor coordinator
"How can it be that even today there are still people dying of hunger? Condemned to illiteracy? Lacking
the most basic medical care? Without a roof over their heads? . . . Christians must learn to make their act
of faith in Christ by discerning His voice in the cry for help that rises from this world of poverty.
