Castles, Knights and
Dragons
This half term in year 2, our topic
will be ‘Castles, Knights and
Dragons’.
English
We will be writing
instructions explaining
how to look after dragons.
We will learn the story of
‘How the World was Made’
and adapt it to tell the
story of ‘How a Castle is
Made’.
We will investigate the
features of recount and
write about our
experiences this term.
Maths
We will be learning number facts
such as doubles, halves and pairs
of numbers that make 7, 8, 9, 10
and 20. We will continue to learn
to recognise coins and add
together their values. Reading
the time to the quarter hour will
be introduced on digital and
analogue clocks. Strategies for
addition will continue to be
developed and we will learn how
to measure length in centimetres
and metres. The children will
identify halves and quarters of
shapes.
History
We will be finding out about the
history of castles. We will learn about
the features of castles, defending
and attacking and what it was like to
live in a castle. We will find out
about the castles in East Anglia that
were built after the Norman
Conquest in 1066.
Science
In Science we will be learning
about materials. We will be
sorting them according to
their properties and
investigating their uses.
We will complete an
investigation to discover
which material is the most
waterproof and learn about
Charles Macintosh and other
people who have developed
useful new materials.
Computing
We will be learning
about the basics
of programming.
The children will
learn how to give
instructions to
programmable toys
including Bee-Bots
and Pixies.
Art
We will be exploring
textiles this half term.
We will investigate
heraldic symbols and
make fabric pennants
using the dip-dyeing
technique.
DT
We will be designing and making a wind up
draw bridge. Please provide your child
with an empty cereal box for them to
bring in to school as soon as possible.
PE
This term, Bumblebee class will have PE on a
Tuesday and Thursday and Caterpillar class will
have PE on a Monday and Thursday. The lesson
at the start of the week will be outside and we
will be improving our defending and attacking
skills whilst playing small team games. Thursday’s
lesson will focus on Country Dancing.
Please make sure that your child has a named PE
kit. Children may wear a plain sweatshirt and
tracksuit bottoms for outdoor lessons.
If your child has pierced ears, please remove their
earrings on PE days.

Music
We will be learning about the
musical term ‘duration’. We will sing
songs and play games that explore
how long or short a musical note is.
PSHE
RE
We will be learning about leaders
and teachers in the Jewish faith
such as Moses and Abraham.
We will be exploring a range of feelings we
all experience and what causes them e.g.
happiness, being angry, feeling worried. The
children will consider how their behaviour
can affect other children’s feelings.

 Castles Day – Friday 14th October. Dress
up as a knight, princess or other castle
themed character.
 Harvest Festival – Friday 7th October at
10am in St Mary’s Church.
